A very old lady was knocked down on the main Handsworth Road this morning near the post office at about 9am. The accident looked pretty bad. Anyone know anything, would like to think that she will be OK !

Wow, that's a tragedy all around. I doubt the old guy who hit her was speeding or anything. Poor beggars. :(

That's precisely the reason nobody would believe a bloke of 63 would be doing 50-60 up the wrong side of Retford Road Kristian - preconceptions

It's about time this road was traffic calmed. Nobody drives up there at 30, and I'm sick to death of risking my life by doing so, much to the annoyance of the road hogs up my exhaust.... but there's a whole thread about that somewhere else

I hope the family of this lady can find peace in their hearts soon. I hope her departure from this world doesn't speed anybody close to her on their way too :(

If it can be shown he WAS speeding, then there is a case to be answered. Whats to say the now deceased pensioner did not see the car coming, and mistakenly stepped out in front of it?

Its a tragic case, and I would think the driver is equally as shaken by it.

There was the silver cinquento, on monday and now the lady crossing just near the post office... what else has been going off?

I would imagine that when you're 89, your chances of surviving being hit even at 30 mph are severely reduced to start with. Let's not go accusing the driver of something that he may well not have been doing.

I travelled down the road seconds after this had happened. reports suggested it was outside Asda, but it wasnt. She was in the central reservation (the bit where cars can cut through to U turn) outside the pub thinks its the old crown. The is a P Crossing just yards before where she was laid and at least one of her shoes was by the crossing so I have a sneaky suspicion she was using the crossing to get to the city bound bus stop which is bang opposite. The state of the front and windscreen of the Hyundia suggested a big impact so its likley that she was thrown a few yards down. I don't know however if this was the case whether or not the green man was showing etc... so I am not trying to apportion any blame.

I too am sparing thoughs for not only her but for her family who will obviously be devastated.

what a load of rubbish!

the amount of accidents that happen on Handsworth Road near the Asda have nothing to do with speed.

most of the accidents are due to the terrible "Turn right" into Asda junction - and people not looking at the traffic lights properly.

No amount of humps or camaras are going to stop those accidents happening.

You sound just like a town planner - accident / problem / conjestion - answer, stick in some speed bumps.

-----

Sad thing to happen, I feel for the family etc - but at least she had a good innings - would be sadder news if a 5 year old had been killed. just being objective!

I see where your coming from on this but i also don't think it was very called for on this thread.

A life is a life regardless of ages.

My thoughts go out to the family, poor woman.

Who mentioned the asda stretch? and traffic calming isn't just speed bumps

And a loss of life is regrettable - no matter what the age. Your comment about her life bieng of less value than a five year old's is callous

yeah it's a terrible road, a few times i've been about to cross when its on green or me to cross and a car has come speeding through the red lights, luckily i always check before i cross.

a few alterations need doing to this road, whether it be cameras for the speeding, plus some kind of alterations for the asda entrance

... and some management of all the bits where you can turn right just over the brow of a hill..... and pedestrian barriers to limit inebriated people from the pubs spilling into the road (and to restrict the 'flow' of illegal bikes).... and lane management to steer traffic round right-turning queues, bus stops, and parked cars

now they are GOOD ideas, better than the usual rants at speeding motorists.
at least they identify the dangers of the road area and dont just blame drivers.

handsworth road is really bad. i cross it alot as i live just near it and i have had a few close ones, even on the pedestrain crossings, cars still go through on red lights. on monday(14/08/06), there was a big crash outside asda. i was at the bus stop down there and there was a car upside down and it looked burnt out but i don't know if there was a fire or not and there was another car that had obviously hit it.
handsworth road really needs to be made safer. there are so many accidents on it.

Ok - I've been called "callus", and "moronic in the extreme"

i'd dissagree with these statements.

I have already said it is a SAD thing that has happened (just like to make that clear).

But when things involve children OF COURSE they are more tragic! an 89 year old women gets run over - yes it's very sad - the family must be devistated - BUT she's lived 89 years, EIGHTY NINE YEARS - that's a bloody good innings. As aposed to a 5 year old getting run over who had their whole lives ahead of them.

>when a relative gets to 89 years old, you start mentally preparing yourself for the fact that they do not have much time left.
>when your child is 4 or 5, the last thing you prepare yourself for is their death.

thus, the pain grief felt for a youngster dying is FAR greater than the grief felt for an elderly relative!

But that would cut the dual carriageway down to onel lane chicaning through these obsticles (as we have to anyway), and you didn't like that idea last time I mentioned it ;)

yeah but the last time you were picking on me a teeny weeny bit, and i've just had half a loaf of malt loaf so i'm relaxed now.

i was however defending my right to negotiate said parked cars etc, as a knowledgeable driver without allowing others to get in my way.(if i remember correctly)

blaimg "speeders" isn't the answer. correct measures should be taken to make all drivers & pedestrians aware of unsafe manouvres. so yellow lines will stop the idiot sparking there, and improved refuges will protect the arse end of cars turning right without causing an obstruction in the main flow.

A outline plan of the Retford Road proposals is available at the bottom of this page (http://www.sheffield.gov.uk/index.asp?pgid=89834). A more detailed plan is available for viewing at Woodhouse Library untill the 8th September. The consultation is still ongoing so feel free to contact me on the number/e-mail given on the website to discuss any issues relating to the scheme.

Just been another accident on Retford Road. Looks like a taxi driver in a VW Passat and a Citroen Xsara. No casulaties, but Xsara has gone into the lamp post with a heavy impact. Police at the scene.

Streetforce trying to stabilise the lamp post.
