View Full Version : Your favourite games console/game
What is your favourite games console and/or game and why?
My favourite is the Super Nitendo as it was the first one I had. Some of the all time classic games have appeared on it too. Just been playing Mario Kart battle mode, great stuff:thumbsup:
snes mario kart was top dollar back in my student days when we'd got back from the pub!
favourite console is anything by nintendo, seems to be the only company doing anything creative these days
ToryCynic 04-07-2004, 15:48 X-Box or PS1. Only ones I own. PS1 Not wired up. X-Box, very good console.

I thought the N64 wrestling games were pretty good too plus I loved the X-wing star wars games.
Yeah the Star Wars games were good, in fact I nearly bought a Gamecube for Rogue Leader, the follow up to the Rogue Squadron games.
If I had room for one I'd possibly still get a GC cos there's a couple of games on it I wouldn't mind playing, but I can't afford 2 sets of games for 2 consoles, so I'm sticking with Xbox.
Sega Saturn / Sega Rally - Best feel of a racing game ever.
Sega Dreamcast / Virtua Tennis - Most playable game ever.
PS2/ Burnout 2 - Best game ever
Sega Mega drive, coz it was me first one.
I have been fighting my addiction to tetris for years, its a losing battle.
Have a gamecube now which i love and waste many hours on when i should be studying:)
LittleWitch 05-07-2004, 11:16 My favourite game EVER is Animal Crossing on the Gamecube. Unfortunately it's only available in America and Japan (why???), so you have to have a US/Jap console to play it. Gamecubes are the best anyway, coz the discs are really tiny and cute, and the joypads are small enough for my little hands. :D
PuressenceUK 05-07-2004, 11:59 Best console without a shadow of a doubt has to be the X-Box, with the best game ever being Civilization 3 on the PC.
Best X-Box title would have to be Halo. Hurry up Halo 2!
Consol - PS2
Game - GTA 4 n Vice City
Amiga, Gamecube, SNES, N64, Sadturn (because, it took a sad..turn :()
Not in any order ;)
magicgem 05-07-2004, 17:17 Tetris for my gameboy! That game never gets old!
noseyrosie 05-07-2004, 22:14 Pokemon for the Gameboy colour. Yeah!
MC Spyda 04-11-2011, 16:17 Amiga 1200 followed closely by N64
Fave games included Mario Kart 64, Street Fighter II, SWOS, BASS.
Honoury mention to the Atari Lynx, my favourite handheld.
Mister M 04-11-2011, 17:03 Tetris for my gameboy! That game never gets old!
I agree, I have that for my Nintendo DS and I never tire of playing it!
I used to have a Playstation 1 and I loved Rayman and especially Medievil & Nightmare Creatures. Nintendo DS version of Rayman is rubbish!
Does anyone know if there are any games like Medievil or Nightmare creatures for the DS???
Atari 2600 and the best game was wizards lair, now got DS and germ buster on More Brain Training
magwitch 04-11-2011, 18:03 Sega and roadrash. I think it's called that - the game riding a bike and hitting/snatching clubs to hit other riders with whilst avoiding cows/police etc.
Not too bothered about console games as they're quite limited ... PC games all the way. Favs are SimCity4, Red Orchestra Ost Front and X-com UFO Defense
MC Spyda 04-11-2011, 19:11 Limited in what way? Do you enjoy the modding aspect of gaming?
I know its not a console but the Dizzy games, particularly Treasure Island Dizzy for the ZX Spectrum has special sentimental value for me.
MC Spyda 04-11-2011, 20:00 I used to love the Dizzy games, although I can't remember ever completing a single one of them haha. I might have to give them a blast again, hopefully the memory won't be ruined by replaying them.

I remember being stuck at a certern part of, I think, Magicland Dizzy, I just couldn't work out what to do, so I actually wrote a letter to a Spectrum magazine called My Sinclair(this was 1992/3, before the internet) asking for help; a week or so later I received a full set of instructions for that particular game from them.
True story.
Limited in what way? Do you enjoy the modding aspect of gaming?
I assume that's aimed at me. I said limited in the means of scope and complexity of the game plus the key mapping in always going to better on PC games.
Yes, I've modded games in the past generally using tools such as GMAX or similar. This has tended to be in games such as flight sims, train sims etc and generally done to add extra content but I've never done anything to give a person an advantage in MP games; that is/has been someting I've always striven against.

You can play these on an android phone(no idea about apple).Just download the free speccy emulator called Marvin.Got Manic Miner on mine, brought back memories.First game i ever bought myself.

I completed Dizzy 7, the Prince of the Yolkfolk one, and without any infinite lives POKEs or anything else.
And my Brother completed the first one.
Alcoblog 04-11-2011, 21:18 Console games are just for stupid plonkers with nothing better to do! It really annoys me how much time people waste on these stupid games when there's loads of other stuff they ought to be doing.
Currently, I'm totally stuck half way through 'Halo 2' with no ammo left whatsoever ...
rickiethecat 07-11-2011, 12:18 I don't have a favourite games console or game as I'm an adult and computer games are for children!

Lol. My serious interest in computer games ended when I was about 15, around the time of the PS1, soon after that I just lost interest. Very recently though I got a Wii, mainly for my young kids to play on
I stopped caring about PC gaming when I got the original Xbox 10 years ago, too many problems with getting stuff to work under Windows XP back then.
Sean Hughes 07-11-2011, 16:15 PS3 - Uncharted
On friday women Should All take Part in a 2 Minute Silence For all the Boyfriends Lost to Modern Warfare 3.
R.B Flooring 13-11-2011, 17:26 Not really my fav game but i remember wasting a few hours playing Jet set Willy on the Amstrad cpc464. Was anybody else a proud owner of a 464?
I'd say my fav game has got to be Metal Gear Solid for the ps1
SSSSSSSSnnnnnaaaaaakkkkkeeeeee!!!!!:):):)
Stopped bothering with consoles after the ps2. I don't own an xbox 360 or a ps3.
NorthernStar 13-11-2011, 17:30 Quake Live for me because games just didn't' get better than the quake series IMO (and it's free!).

I have to disagree your eminence there were some great games on the Atari 2600, for the time when they first came out easily on a par with the spectrum

I think it was about 1600. I am back to the beginning now, because after 365 days, you have to start all over again.
Still loving my 360, although it still doesn't have the charm of the Commodore 64 from my youth! :(

Commodore 64? Pfft.. I preferred the Spectrum, the Xbox of the 80s! I'd welcome Xbox 360 updates of all the old Ultimate games as well, it could be done, Microsoft owns Rare, which was formed from the remains of what was Ultimate in the 80s.

I know, I had that other week. Got back to around 6000 now but before I had 18,000plus. Also got Brain Training asnd that's just sent me back to beginning. Have you got Big Brain Academy?

Nah. The Spectrum was pants. I never had one because it was, quite literally, such a cheap and flimsy piece of tosh.
That said, some of the games were truly legendary and the C64 never got a look in. Atic Atac, Manic Miner; so many amazing games.
Hang on, wasn't this supposed to be a C64 loving post from me? Hmmm...

OOh forgot about the Amiga. Now that really kick started the whole console thing into the stratosphere!

My Hero
Been playing X-Com Enemy Unknown otherwise known as X-Com UFO Defense still quite possibly, after all these years, the greatest game the world has ever seen.
My favourite 'lounge' game console would have to be the Dreamcast. Sufferred a very untimely commercial death, it truly was a revolutionary machine when it came out, with some ground-breaking games (JSF, and the precursor to PGR/Forza: MSR).
My favourite 'exotic' console is Neo Geo's AES (never bettered for arcade-type games). It only pips NEC's PC engine (the most arcade-faithful home version of R-Type, bar none) to the post by a hair. Something barely bigger than a megadrive game box, which wiped the floor cleanly with the Megadrive and SNES, even when put together.
My favourite 'handheld' console is the Neo Geo Pocket, pretty much for the same reason as the AES and the best d-pad and buttons still to this day. It only pips the GBA SP (backlit version) to the post by a hair. Advance Wars has a lot (of travel hours :D) to answer for.
There are many others of which I have fond memories for various reasons, but they aren't exactly 'favourites'. MB's Vectrex, Nintendo's VirtualBoy, 3DO, CBS Colecovision (my first).
The best gaming "platform" I ever owned was a JAMMA arcade cab. You can grab all your Spectrums, C64s (neither really consoles, unless you count the C64GS), Megadrives, PS3, 360s and whatnot...if you're a gamer, you just cannot top the genuine arcade experience :)
iphonelover 14-11-2011, 09:48 Best game for showing off next gen consoles (by that i mean xbox360 & ps3) hands down is unchartered on ps3. No one for this reason can deny.
Most fun ive ever had on a console was a PS2 when i used to play timesplitters with friends. Used to have a right laugh on splitscreen.
Game ive got the most use out of has been 'home' on the ps3, not exactly a game i dont suppose but its like real life sims, brilliant and innovative.
*Peaches* 14-11-2011, 10:41 Can't for the life of me remember what console it was, but the abe's trilogy was ace :hihi: i remember fighting my dad over the controller to play it. I saved for ages to buy those games and i only ever got to play them once before he took over and completed them all :(
fruitisbad 14-11-2011, 11:00 zelda 64 on the n64 was epic for it's time, as was final fantasy 7. great in depth stories and gameplay.

The most memorable C64 game for me was Led Storm. Loved it. http://youtu.be/tZvy7VTQKUA

My favourite too, especially MSR and Shenmue. I finished Shenmue 1 and started on Shenmue 2 but it then gave up the ghost and won't recognise the discs.
Perfect Dark for N64
GoldenEye was better IMO.
MC Spyda 14-11-2011, 19:15 Till this day, Golden Eye is still the only FPS that I have ever truly enjoyed. Great game.

GoldenEye: Reloaded came out on Xbox and PS3 last week, you might want to look it up.
some guy 14-11-2011, 19:38 PC. Once you go PC-gaming, you never go back.
PC. Once you go PC-gaming, you never go back.
On the contrary, I used to be a big PC gamer, gave it up when I got the first Xbox in 2001, PC gaming is too much hassle these days, you have to upgrade every other week to keep up with spec requirements etc...

Not really. I have a 5 year old machine that cost me £600 which still runs most modern games at high spec, and anything else at mid spec.
MC Spyda 14-11-2011, 19:49 It's all good and well PC gaming being brilliant, but sometimes you just want to chill and play some games vs your real life friends. And in my case, the majority of them aresolely on PS3 or Xbox.
segasonic 14-11-2011, 19:50 NEC's PC engine (the most arcade-faithful home version of R-Type, bar none)
Time to annoy you. ;)
The Sharp X68000 version is better. It retains the parallax scrolling. and has the correct screen ratio. The PCE version has that annoying vertical push-scroll.
(Not that I don't love the PCE version!)
Time to annoy you. ;):D
I'll annoy you back, you young whippersnapper: the Sharp X68000 is not a console (http://jscustom.theoldcomputer.com/images/manufacturers_systems/Sharp/X68000/721213sharp-x68000.system.jpg) (so doesn't qualify for the thread... as, otherwise, the "most arcade-faithful home version of R-Type" would be running under MAME on a PC ;))
MC Spyda 15-11-2011, 08:53 We could get into a big discussion about what is and isn't a console, and depending on the defintions used, we could get PC's actually being classed consoles or even Playstations being classed as not consoles. :hihi:
:D

Yeah but do you know that legally, unless you own the original Arcade machine, which is unlikely, downloading the ROMs are technically illegal unless you delete them within 24 hours, I know nobody ever does, but that's the official legal line about ROMs.

It's illegal full stop, regardless of how long you have it. The 24 hour timescale is a myth.

You said home version, not console version. :P But yeah, MAME would win. :D
unless you own the original Arcade machineIt's actually the JAMMA board that would need to be owned, not the full cab. But, as rightly pointed out by MC Spyda, extracting the ROM from the board is a copyright infringing act in the first place. Even if you own the cab or board.
But that is not the point or purpose of the thread, which is about consoles (check the title if you don't believe me :hihi:). In that context, a 'home' version discussed in this thread is at least implicitly understood to relate to console versions only.
Aaanyway...semantics playfighting aside, a console (to my mind) is a device that, first and foremost, plays interchangeable games.

Would you class the Amiga/Atari as a games console? Just wondering.
I personally would, but it's really not too dissimilar to a standard PC, which I wouldn't class as a games console.
Would you class the Amiga/Atari as a games console? Just wondering.No. Nor the ZX, C64, etc.
I'd class them all as home computers - gaming being a function they offer (amongst many others, just like any other computer), not their main purpose (irrespective of how/why they garnered their cult following, i.e. mostly because of gaming).
But I would class their consolized version (CD32 for the Amiga, C64GS for the C64, GX4000 for the Amstrad CPC/128, etc.) as consoles.
There is a genuine demarcation, to my mind typified by 'Adam' for the CBS Colecovision back in the day: a console, which can only become a computer with the relevant add-on.
Atari 2600 and the best game was wizards lair, now got DS and germ buster on More Brain TrainingI agree!!
My favourite Console of the 80s is Atari 2600!!
The early 80s was THE BEST TIME for Games (From about 1980-1983 -- When the BEST STUFF came out)
