i attended there from 1975-8.

I remember Mr Marshall, Miss Williams, Mr Longley, and Mr Ramsbottom, who were teachers.
in my time there the bank by lower school was often out of bounds.

I went to Abbeydale from 1978 til '85 - I seem to remember having half a term of art with dad while I was in the first year. It was in one of those wartime pre-fabs in the 6th form centre. It was a bit weird being taught by your own father, I have to say. My mates were always trying to embarrass me by going on about girls I supposedly fancied.

those prefabs were bloomin' dire, weren't they? We used to have homecrafts, like cooking and sewing in one of the prefabs.

and I absolutely hated the Gym' in the 6th form centre. we always seemed to have PE in the 6th F-C in rotten winter (!) It was always stinking FREEZING there!

We were on our way to PE there, mucking about, playing, one winter, when I was hit, in the face with a "snow"ball, thrown by a classmate, who didn't realise it was so hard, and icy. I had a very badly cut face.

I remember having french conversation, in the old house (the actual old house, the grange, not Holt House) in a really poky room, right up in the attic, (or so it seemed)

I always thought holt house looked really pretty, in the garden-y thing that surrounded it. I believe that it is demolished, now, and is housing.... such a pity.

It is about 26-odd years, now, since I attended Abbeydale Grange School, and some of the memories are a bit cloudy, now.

i have heard that the building on the bank between lower school and 6th F-C which was the 6th -F library is now the library for the entire school, these days. I liked the lower school library, I spent a lot of time in there, studying.

I remember the class screaming with fear, in the 1st or 2nd year, when there were some gales, which lifted the roof of the top-floor classroom we were in for a geography lesson.

I remember the wood at the top of the bank being almost permanemtly out of bounds, except during the dreaded Cross-country runs, when we'd run round the upper field by the hockey pitches, up to the pavillion at the very top, (where the cricket pitches were), and then down the Hastings Road side of the field, through the wood, round the lower school art block and finally back up to upper school. I hated x-country! ugh!

Abbeydale Grange lost it's 6th form then the upper school and so is now only the lower school on Hastings road and the old 6th form library. The 6th form buildings, both of the old houses and all the 50's prefab buildings have all gone.
I remember Mr Howe physics teacher bellowing out of the windows at people supposedly doing the 'cross country run' but who preferred to walk, not after he shouted though.
Many good teachers who were for the most part held in respect, who remembers Mr Chatterton who could throw board chalk with such unerring accuracy?
Mr Cooper, nobody wanted to be told to go and sit outside his office.
P.E. teachers, Hague, Bates, Wilkinson, remembered but not fondly
Miss Nichols, English teacher a great teacher and pretty to boot.
School days the best days of your life?

I think the bank was out of bounds in wet weather/snow, but I was doing a backwards roly poly in the summer!
I remember Miss Badger asking me when I was going to have it off (the pot) and the whole class burst out laughing :|

The second time, I slipped on ice on the path thru the woods in the winter, they never seemed to grit it. My mum bought me a donkey jacket from the army stores to make me feel better :)

One theme is emerging from all the posts from ex-pupis.

Whoever was the English teacher should have been sacked.

I didn't think my grammar and spelling was that bad. I do trip over my fingers a bit, when typing, but my only grammatical fault is that I often forget to capitalise the first letter of my sentences.

There was something weird about [Master] Bates and Haig the way they liked to dish out corporal punishment to an entire class at a time for one minor misdemeanour. They came into the showers too often aswell.

Those cross country runs were a nightmare, I remember once when so many people bunked off a PE lesson on four people turned up.

the library in lower school was on floor 2 just opposite the woodwork and metalwork workshops... (counting the level with the cloakrooms as level 1)

Which was the 6th-form library when I was there... and the horrendous, and arduous other-side-of-the-city, distance of 200 feet from the Lower-school building. What an ordeal...

Hi Brendan.

it's a nice surprise, and a blast from the past, to see your name crop up on the forum.

I was in your class at school, with people like Joy Waller, Helen Phillips, Ann Womersley, Mark Lithgow, Steven Williams and Steven P, Duane Ritchie, Tina O'Brien, Liza Wragg the three Angelas (Bower Barrows and Burrows) Diane Mills, Lynn Jackson, Linda Needes, Susan Williams... (Oh this takes me back... lol)

I have a photograph of our class, (you are on it!) when we were in class 2G, taken on the banking, behind lower School, just outside the art block. (Hmm, 2g, that'd have made us about 13... oh, dear... now I feel very old... lol

How's your sister, Imelda? I remember her from school, as she changed to High Storrs about the same time as I did, to go to 6th form, IIRC. we used to catch the Number 4 bus together.

It's quite possible. You'll have to PM me with your name, and which class you were in, as there were different streams that didn't always have classes together. (there were C and G stream who were broadly similar, academically A and O stream, and F and G/H? I think.)

I was a contemporary of the people I named above, and others such as Meg Guest, Mark Skidmore, Sylvia Auld, Martin Thackeray, Donna Smith, Tafiq Mohammed (also called Mohammed Tafiq and Tafiq Benares) all of whom were in my year, though not necessarily my class.

Did your family live at the top end of Sheldon road, at nether edge? I have an idea I know who you are :D

Memories!!! I was in Imelda Murphy's year! I went to Holt House and Carterknowle Junior. I remember Deborah McCarthy, Dawn Butterworth (I think!), Jane Fenwick, Peter Jackson, Arthur Deas (and sisters. I lived next door but 3 to them), Elizabeth Ford, and no doubt others.

As for teachers, I remember Mr Ogley the RE teacher - he terrified me! Mrs Berry, I think Geography. Miss Nicolson English and many of the names mentioned on here.

I wasn't at Abbeydale grange long. I became ill and left, having loads of hospital treatment, etc. I've been in a wheelchair for the last 35 years or thereabouts.

Green Veggie Arthur Deas was my best friend at school all the way from Holt house and if i am not mistaken you had a vested interest in model railways? i might be wrong though!

Hi Brendan, yes its Jawaid its been a very very long time mate and considering we lived close by in the old days and today you are on the side of the world. I am really happy you got into medicine and are doing so well. I must admit i was not aware you had written a book. I was digging some old stuff going back decades and guess what i pulled out? our class photo with Mrs Warrens class. Quite alot of faces brought back some memories.. Rememeber Daniel Cornwell? wanted to be a Politician, wonder where he is these days? Times have flown by and often wondered where my old friends have had ended up. We must keep in touch and find others it would be really cool. David Holloway? where is he these days. Arthur Deas is still living in Sheffield working for his sisters company manufactures toys. I ended up setting my own prop trading firm securequity (google it) in 1999 trading equities in U.K Pan European Markets. Andrew Frost, you keep in touch with him? Does he rememebr me? Now we have met up lets keep in touch. Best Regards.
Hi Jawaid,

what is your email address? You can find me on facebook under same nickname of Melbourne. Cheers mate, Brendan

Hi Brendan.

it's a nice surprise, and a blast from the past, to see your name crop up on the forum.

Hi Plaintalker,

who are you? You can contact me on facebook if you want, same nickname located in melbourne, cheers, brendan

There was something weird about [Master] Bates and Haig the way they liked to dish out corporal punishment to an entire class at a time for one minor misdemeanour. They came into the showers too often aswell.

that was true, naylor you forgotten your pe kit again slipper for you

Went to Grange 1969-1974.
The boys were made to do Scottish dancing as well as the girls,we were told it would improve our footwork when playing rugby!
Also remember hiding under the steps leading into Millhouses Park when Jeppo came hunting for absconders at lunch time.He was stood directly above us,surveying the horizon.
Form teachers were Miss Todd/Miss Sproull (1Q)
Mr Pashley (3G)
Mr Pollard (4+5S)
Our lessons at upper school were mixed with forms H & C.

I think we were the first to attend as a comprehensive in 1969.The lower school was on Hastings Rd where we spent the first 3 years, then up to the Upper School beyond the woods for 2 years, then 6th form(but not for me).And it was definitely mixed(bike sheds!)
