It's not horrible stuff at all - just because some people can't make do with anything less than the strongest lager possible!!!!
Cheapest beer I've found is the Samuel Smith's Old Brewery Bitter at the Old Mother Red Cap in Bradway - £1.18 per pint - and that's normal price, not a promotion.
mr.blaze 05-07-2004, 18:09 There is a Lager Thresher sells called Firebrand it's brewed by the same brewery as Staropramen. It's 6 quid for 8 large cans and they have even better deals on cases and keggs of it. Can't remember the other prices sorry.

Hey, andy - how do you get on in the Redcap? Are you a died in the wool regular? Or are you andy the barman? I lived almost opposite the Redcap and went in 3-4 nights a week for a year and a half. I found it to be the 'closest' and unfriendliest pub Ive ever known ( and I have wide experience)
Dont bother to say hello to sue and alan ( the 'management') from me - unless you've been going in there 20 years, you aint worthy!
i can get a pint of water for free! beet that!

I haven't been to the Redcap for about a year. If I drink locally I normally drink in the Castle Inn.
I think those comments are a bit harsh though!
in our bar (bar 101) we have marstons FYC at £1.40 a pint, thats the normal price but personally i wouldn't wash the pots with it..horrible stuff.

Its the only pub Ive ever been in where they can go through the whole process of serving you without uttering a word! No hello (not essentiall) no please, no thank you no nothing!
The Castle, I agree, is OK. different pub alltogether
Wonder if Its changed since Ken has left?
commie pig 07-07-2004, 01:16 brown bear must be the cheapest pint in the town centre. £1.40 odd for stout, less for bitter or the lager, & a top pub too.

The new management haven't made any dramatic changes. A few cosmetic changes in the lounge, a few changes on the food side of the business and they have put beer prices up, nothing major.
Atmosphere has gone though, as Ken did the mine host thing in a very over the top way. That said some people prefer to be left alone for quiet conversation.
The same bar staff are still there though. And all the beer I have tried since the change has been in good nick.

Yes, another Sam Smith's pub! The Old Brewery Bitter here is £1.24 a pint if I remember correctly - even cheap than Wetherspoons!
Only trouble with Brown Bear these days is the clientele seems to be dominated by the old scroats that have been barred from other pubs who are their purely to get tanked up on cheap alcohol.
A shame - it's always been a fine little boozer.
