Internetowl 04-07-2004, 01:04 Woman injured in canal path attack by youths
A WOMAN was kicked, punched and dragged to the floor in a robbery attack by two teenagers in Sheffield. The 39-year-old was also beaten with a two-foot paddle in the attack on Tinsley canal towpath on Tuesday evening.
The woman had been feeding ducks on the towpath by the white suspension bridge just off Sheffield Road, Tinsley, at about 6pm when the teenagers approached and asked for the time. When she took out her mobile phone to check the clock she was told to hand it over.
She refused and put the phone back in her pocket.
But as she looked away she was flung to the floor then repeatedly kicked and punched.
One of the pair hit her with a two-foot paddle on her back and arms.
The woman suffered bruising to her back and arms and was described as "very distressed" after the attack.
The attackers left without taking her mobile phone.
Both were aged around 16 and described as being of Asian appearance.
One was 5ft 7ins tall, of skinny build and put on a Jamaican/English accent.
He had a pointed nose and short black hair and wore dark track suit bottoms and a navy bomber jacket.
The other was about 5ft 10 and spoke with an Asian/English accent.
He had a chubby face and was wearing blue jeans.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call Attercliffe CID on 0114 296 4361.
Its not safe to feed the ducks in broad daylight!
A disgraceful attack. I hope these 2 are found and jailed. I add my good wishes to yours in hoping that the poor woman makes a speedy recovery.
ToryCynic 04-07-2004, 02:34 I'm going to sound like a real old git here, but isn't it appalling to see what such a dreadful place the world is coming to. Simply and innocently telling the time and you get punched and kicked etc. Hope your police force finds these morons and that no-one else ends up in the same state - as this woman.
General Moan and "Rant" over! :P

Well here's another "old git" who agrees with you.
owdlad.
I'm waiting for the woolly liberals to pop up and say that she probably triggered the attack by first of all showing her phone and then refusing to hand it over....
Had she fallen in to the water it could have been a murder/manslaughter being looked in to.

Greybeard 04-07-2004, 11:46 Hmmm...do I have to be a woolly liberal to suggest that some people need to be a little more street-wise. This lady learned a lesson the hard way.
I think kids who offend in this way should be birched...but then I'm just a wooly minded old reactionary :D
Internetowl 04-07-2004, 12:45 birching is too good for a lot of them - I really do fear for my elder years if this is how society is going....perhaps euthenasia (?spelling) is the answer after all.
Hi greybeard,
Nah....not wooly liberal for suggesting that. I'd have not pulled my phone out, either.
I wonder when we'll move from suggesting being streetwise / risk aware when out in the city to starting to carry 'weaponised' accessories - insect sprays for squirting in eyes, sharpened combs, etc. as a matter of course?
I guess that this is the sort of crime that high technology, speed cameras, police patrols in patrol cars, etc. do not stop. How do people feel about more foot patrols?

Having a bobby on the beat sounds good, but in practice it is never going to work, these days even the lowest of the low have cars, and the coppers wouldn't have a prayer of catching them, and if he was at one end of the street and this happened at the other end by the time he got to know about it plus the time getting there they would be long gone. At least with a car he/she has a fair chance of at least getting there fresh for the chase if need be.

Yes, I think more cops on the streets are needed in this *modern* society.
IMO, due to lack of cops on the street is why there is so much "street" crime.
Even if there simple presence is *felt* or noted by people, It will make a few think twice about committing crimes.

They should teach Policemen the ways of the Force, how to be there but not there, that their prescence be felt by the evil Empire of chavs.
ToryCynic 04-07-2004, 17:09 I remember back in 1998, my dad went over to Italy and there were a bunch of "chavs" and all this 6" 6 Caribeniari (sp) Cop did was just stood there on the other side of the road to them, stared hard at them and they dissapeared!

The few policemen/women I've seen out of their cars lately look to need a month's basic army training before they could even think about giving chase to the kind of low-life who were the culprits in this case. And all that rammel they have to carry is an accident waiting to happen.
As for self-defence, it seems Blunket and the rest of his ilk think we should face the results of his failure naked an unarmed.
Most of the things we could use like miniature stun guns and CS sprays are illegal, and carrying one for self-defence could earn you, a blameless citizen, a longer sentence than a crim with a record.
For anyone feeling they dare not venture out alone I'd suggest a dog. Not a big one, but a fierce one like our Jack Russell.
....he barks at me if I haven't got my cap on straight :loopy:
dwhembro 04-07-2004, 17:21 Read in the paper yesterday that a judge strongly recommended that unprovoked violent assaults upon ordinary people going about their day to day business be given particularly sever sentences. Hear, hear. I agree.
Scum bags.
There's no possible defence for that.. but it looks like we won't even be able to smack them soon.
LittleWitch 05-07-2004, 09:26 It is so upsetting when I hear about the levels of violent crime in this country - most of it committed by young people - most of whom could probably have done with some parental discipline when they were younger - and now some extremists are trying to make smacking children illegal???!!!
If this bill comes into force, I for one will be seriously considering leaving this country for good, and going to live somewhere more civilised - like Iraq....

Yeah, let's have a carbinieri police force in this country - good idea:
One of the first was a UK reporter who was hit repeatedly by a group of police, who held him by his neck while the other carabinieri beat him with clubs. He was left in the street in a pool of blood, and is presently in a coma at a local hospital
nice people. I would move on if a Carabinieri started looked at me in even a remotely funny way.

I admit that occupiers of The House of Lords may be extreme but I wouldn't call them extremists.
I also don't think it's extreme that children should be offered the same protection against assault as adults. So you think it's OK to change a child's behaviour using violence but once they pass into adulthood it becomes illegal? Seems a strange way to treat children.
When you do leave could you please take Frank Bruno and Paul Daniels who have also threatened to leave in the past but didn't?
Classic Rock 05-07-2004, 15:59 They didn't even take her mobile phone! I can understand the attack if they saw the phone, wanted it and mugged her for it....that offers a solution. To attack her and leave the phone, is another matter.
Where did the paddle come from?
I hope these attackers are brought to justice and i feel very sorry for the woman involved as it sounds an awful thing to go through.
I don't agree with the 'what's the world coming to...' comments though. All my life i have heard about attacks like this, its nothing new, and i don't think they are becoming all that more common, or we wouldn't be discussing this one attack.
Don't let fear take over.
