View Full Version : A very brave policeman
Well done to the policeman who was in the Page Hall area of Sheffield yesterday afternoon and was actually radioing in details of a car parked on double yellow lines outside the shops. Cars are always parked dangerously and illegally around that area (along with cars parked at Fir Vale bottom) and are an absolute nuisance. Don't know if he actually ticketed the car but at least he was making an effort checking it - even though he was being watched very closely by a gang of youths.

Sounds like he was doing something useful for once, but being very brave?
JPMiddleton 11-08-2006, 14:25 I think brave is a little over the top, admittedly there are those that would turn a blind eye but its not like he deserves a medal. He was doing what he gets paid to do.
simondjuk 11-08-2006, 14:36 Im glad that someone has seen a policeman doing something about people parking on double yellows, after all the lines are there for a reason and there ought to be more police looking out for people parking there.
Admittedly im not sure where Page Hall is but near where I live, one road has double yellows along each side, and on that road there is a chippy. This road also has a sharp bend and no end of times ive come round the corner has had to hit the brakes cos some inconsiderate t*at has parked on the road.
There should also be people wandering about car parks, fining and clamping people that who are not disabled but intend on parking in disabled spots, same goes for parents with children parking too. Some must think that cos they have kids, but they are not with them, have a right to park there. Im sure they do it in some places but more needs to be done.
blackadder 11-08-2006, 14:40 Parking was "decriminalised" some time ago and is now enforced by the council.
To people questioning the 'bravery' of the policeman, please be aware that in Page Hall events like the one described above can quickly escalate in to what the police would proberbly describe as a 'situation'.
Page Hall/Burngreave/Pitsmoor are all on a par in the Sheffield area. I still say he was brave. Many police cars drive past these parked vehicles and just ignore them.
Parking on double yellow lines is hardly a serious crime though, would you rather the police spend their time catching drug dralers and rapists or writing parking tickets ?
police checks on vehicles can reveal many things about the drivers. Sometimes it can be a case of "get them for one, get them for the other"

I agree with what you say but they are catching people breaking the law so writing tickets or whatever they are doing is fine by me
dizzy_chick 11-08-2006, 15:03 I drive through Page Hall and Owler Lane every day and the drivers who par outside the shops on double yellow lines cause a lot of disruption to through traffic. I hope to see Parking Services down there more often!!
the cars not only park on double yellows but also on the hatched markings for the zebra crossing, its a nightmare going past at 5 in the afternoon, one of the shop keepers on the other side of the road also puts pallets on the road so nobody can park but there own lorry

Thats very true. A surprsing amount of people who are wanted for other crimes are caught when being stopped for traffic offences. After all if your happy to rob someones car your not excalty going to worry about the speed limit or pakring on double yellows.

exactly
do a vehicle check - find out whether it;s insured and mOt'd thanks to the current databases ... make sure the VED is legit , maybe even find out if the keeper is wanted / known to pc Plod for beign naughty...
barnie41 11-08-2006, 22:19 Whether the Page Hall incident is bravery or not is a moot point.
Two years ago, on boxing day, a Leeds PC was shot dead after questioning a man for simply parking on double yellow lines.
Nick2/ Discopaul - yes that was his job, and is the job of the Police. Just shows you never know whats coming next.
That parking offence became a Police funeral, decimating a family at Christmas.
If you fancy the job, applications are currently being taken.

I doubt you'll ever see SCC Parking Attendants in the Fir Vale/Page Hall area unless they have a couple of dozen PCs in APCs for back up :P

or Highfield/Abbeydale Road area either :D
now in Woodseats, they'll even argue that a loading bay isn't intended for unloading

Brave? Why should there be one law for these areas and another for the rest of the country ? Isnt that whats got them so bad in the first place ? They should be treated no different if the rule of law is to hold ...
Parking on double yellow lines is hardly a serious crime though, would you rather the police spend their time catching drug dralers and rapists or writing parking tickets ?they cant all be chasing the rapists and drug dealers at least this cop was making a statement, like, you think you can do exactly as you please dont you,?well, not today, today im going to break that chain, you are not untouchable," thumbs up to him,if more cops actually bothered, then the criminals wouldnt have such a grip on the city.
i once mentioned the amount of cars that were double parked in the wicker, some were even on the pavement, others hanging accross junctions etc,the police said"we are keeping a low profile" what the f. does that supposed to do to stop the illegal parking ?

I saw a walking Council parking attendant on Firth Park Road on Thursday, looking closely at the illegally parked cars - he was on his own and there were no vans on standby.
or Highfield/Abbeydale Road area either
Actually, the London Road/Abbeydale Road corridor is heavily patrolled while the bus lanes are in operation - they're always ticketing cars!
