McLaren will go right up in my estimation if he does

But what will Motson talk about if there's no Beckham on the pitch :o

He should drop the rest of the dross who were found out at the last World Cup and simply aren't up to International level, eg Lampard, Campbell, G Neville, Crouch.

Sadly it'll be the usual old pals act; anyone English who plays for Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and the Scum will get a call up purely because of who they play for rather than how good they are.

Agreed Basil, its always been the same case, however with Mac's decision on Becks today it gives me encouragement that other players worthy i.e. Harewood, Ashton, Darren Bent, Joey Barton, Jimmy Bullard, Nigel Reo-Coker, Anton Ferdinand, Gareth Barry etc. will all have a sense of renewed optimism.

Why isnt Gary Neville up to international standard?

I think a hint of bias is at play here.
Let me know a better right back if you can - Danny Mills???

Ho Ho Ho!

I think Beckam should still be in the squad as he can still bring something to team but considering what Lennon did in the few minutes he was given at the world cup he should be given a few starts in an England shirt to show what he can do. With Lennon looking so good, if SWP can sort him self out again and Pennant can finally start to deliver on his potential then we should have lots of options on the right of midfield.

Name a better English right back that Gary Neville, there is a very good reason he's been 1st choice in his position for the last decade no matter who has been England manager and why Manu have never sort to replace him which is that he’s a very, very good player.

Also Lampard is a damn good player, he just had a bad tournament also he doesn’t seem to be able to combine very well with Gerrard.

I'm not a huge fan of Beckham, but he can deliver a little piece of quality to turn a match around. No matter what you might say, it's true and it's been proven time and time again.

Edit: I'd just like to say, I think Aaron Lennon is a good player too, but leaving beckham out of the SQUAD seems a bit daft to me. Although in the freindlies, I'd like to see Lennon play more.

Indeed, but he's 31(?) and his star is fading now.

We have enough hungry young players who can play in his position to be able to drop him.

He's been a good servant for England, but the time is now right to make changes, and I think second choice Steve has made the right decision.

Yeah, I think that's the main problem for Beckham, he's still good enough to play for England, but he'll be too old for the next major tournament.

Do you use him in the qualifiers and risk his replacement not having time to gel with the team, or do you drop him now, because there's no point in him playing anymore.

The latter, every time.

No room for sentiment at the top(Ha!) level.

Yeh:thumbsup:
Can't keep a player in a team that has only two ball(s0. Free kicks and the 45% angle ball from just passed the half way line.

Just whatch how the mighty will fall. Only the press rated him and the women that knew nowt about football.

Watch the stick insect drop him then.

Woooooooooo, no Beckham!

Sadly, Kieron Richardson, a player distinguished only in his mediocrity, is in the squad.

Beckham is still one of the best players at the biggest club in the world.
If we have someone who can do what he does better then fine drop him.
From what ive seen though we havent!!!!!

Beckham is a big star at a big club that have not come close to winning a trophy in 3 seasons.

He is also showing his age, his lack of pace evident in the last world cup and last seasons champions league.

While his passing and dead balls are an asset, he could perform as he pleased and knew he would never be dropped under Eriksson.

Now, all that has changed. If he gets back in the squad, I hope it is because he's playing well, and not getting by purely on his name, which is what he's done for a few seasons now.

Wow. Such naivety.

The quality of a team isn't equal to the sum of the quality of the individuals. Or something.

(And that only applies if I'm giving your view credence, which I'm not)

The whole country was crying out for Lennon to be put on the wing during the last World Cup.

I would miss Beckham if he was playing like he was 4 or 5 years ago, but he isn't, so I wont.

Beckham is pretty good at what he does it’s just that he’s mainly good at selling razor blades adn is no longer the top class winger he used to be, Lennon and others can do a lot of things on a football pitch that he can’t like run fast with the ball and scare the crap out of defenders.

When Lennon played in the world cup teams often found it necessary to put two men on him thus creating space for the rest of the England team (including Beckham who got an assist when Lennon was on the pitch & he got a bit of room to play after having produced nothing in the game till then), despite this Lennon still got past them and put some good balls in, as long as he doesn’t move to Chelsea he will only get better, Beckham will only get worse.

Although Beckham doesn't deserve a place in the starting 11, I don't get why McClaren dropped him from the squad. Especially as he recalled Phil Neville - how does that work?

Possibly Mclaren is actually seeing Becks for what he is - his best is well gone now, Lennon had blistering pace when he came on, and maybe its time for England to move on without him.

And - the Posh & Becks business might have ruffled more feathers than we all know about, there could be a hundred and one reasons.

I've been lucky enough to see Becks play several times for England, and was there for the Greece world cup qualifier when he scored possibly the best goal I've witnessed at an international game, but life moves on, football moves on and England really do need to get things sorted if we are actually going to win something.

Agent Gypo hit the nail right on the head - his best is well gone now.

Isn't Beckham injured though???..I thought his injury from the Portugal game meant he was out for a while and was going to miss the Greece game anyway??
