View Full Version : Sheffield Hallam Uni, any good?
Dave2986 02-07-2004, 18:38 Hi all
I’m thinking of going to Sheffield Hallam this September, but don’t really know if it’s any good, I won’t to study an engineering degree
I would also have to take up the accommodation as I live in the west mids ATM
Any comments would be very helpful
Thanks
DAve
Hi, I've been an Engineering student at hallam. From my point of view, the facilities for engineering are excellent. And the learning resources are also first class. However, my opinion is subjective as is anyones. I can't emphasise enough how important it is to visit the university to get a better understanding of the place. That way you can make an informed decision.
I'll try and post more later, but am on my way out now.
I too have done an Engineering degree. They are apparently highly regarded, more so than Sheff Uni Engineering degrees.
I would recommend Bramall Court HOR. It's quite a way frrom city campus (about 20 mins at a slow walk), but they are very good halls. And you get plenty of excersise walking to and from uni each day.
Dave2986 03-07-2004, 09:10 thanks for the replys, i did go to the open day earlier this year, as well as several other ones, but you nenver sems to know what they arnt telling you, so its very hard to judge.
Thanks very much for the comments guys, you have helped ease my mind :)
I have put bramford courght down as my accomdation as that is the only halls with broadband i think, and i really need that
thanks again, but any more info greatly appreasited
swiss2004 10-08-2004, 12:16 From September I'll be at Sheffield Hallam Uni, anybody who 's already studying there? what is it like?
Disco_Cat 10-08-2004, 12:56 I'm at Sheffield university studying History and i love it, the course and the uni.
Hallam is such a diverse university though, it is hard to describe what it’s like without knowing what course you are doing and where you will be based.
Please get in touch if you have any questions.
Disco_Cat 10-08-2004, 13:00 At he moment it's very wet. the learning centre is closed due to flooding.
I was a student there up until about 2 years ago....its not too bad i suppose, depend what you are studying.
from my own experience (ie having small kids and a job) I found the flexibilty of deadlines differ from school to school. I spoke to one student who had a deadline extended by 6 weeks because he had to look after his girlfriend who broke her leg skiing. however, when my son (aged 14 months at the time) was rushed to ICU following a cardiac arrest, I was told i couldnt have an extention cos 'that was life, and kids got ill, deal with it'.
needless to say i havent finished my degree.......
good luck, just remember to enjoy yourelf and dont get bogged down with stuff - talk to people if you are struggling - and dont let the miserable buggers who complain about students get you down. they seem to forget they were once young and daft!!!!!!

Please get in touch if you have any questions. hi there, thanks for your reply. I'll be doing business studies, don't know exactly where I'll be based. I hope to make many friends at uni. I'd like to join the gym , too. Do you go there? If yes what is it like?
Disco_Cat 10-08-2004, 15:40 I was a member of the gym but only be default because you needed an sports card to join the snowboarding society and that entitled you to limited gym access for free. But my gym membership along with my VIP pass to Kingdom (allegedly worth a bit of money) have never been used so i can’t offer much advice on that front. Other that Hallam is a very sporty place, (better at sports then Sheffield but i don’t want to get involved in the whole varsity rah rah argument) and i would suspect given the dominance of sport at Hallam (This years and last years Presidents are captains of sporting teams and more people vote in the election for sports officer then any other post, even president)
I would suspect the gym facilities are very good.
Would you like the e-mail address of the Athletic Union official? they will be much better placed then me to answer questions about gyms and stuff.
Also would you like the international students officers e mail address?
swiss2004 10-08-2004, 16:02 [thanks for your help.
i don't think i need that cause it's years that I 've been living in the UK.

Remember there are many different disciplines of engineering
jinjimbob 11-08-2004, 00:13 I went to Hallam Uni, I think that you learn more at that uni than at Sheffield Uni, its a more hands on learning, less theoretical.
I got a EEE from there 10 years ago.

yeah, and sheffield uni is streets ahead in pretty much every single one.
i'm not being a dick here for no reason, i went to sheffield uni to do EEE a few years ago and dropped out, i'm on my way to hallam in september to do a teaching course.

Sheffield Uni is actually rated higher in aerospace, civil, mechanical and electrical engineering. Check out the times uni guide. Sheffield is in the top 5ish for every type. whether hallam has better links with industry i dont know but i wouldn say that hallam is more higly regarded than uni. Either way whichever uni your at im sure an eingineering degree will be much more usefull than say a degree in playstation.
Kathryn3 11-08-2004, 11:31 Hey Swiss2004,
There are two gyms at Hallam, one at Collegiate campus and one at City. Doing business studies you'll be based at City, which is the busier, but larger one. The Sport Hallam card is really reasonable for what you get.
I'm in the school of Business & Finance as well, although I'm not doing Business Studies.
I really like it, I chose a business studies modules in my second year, and found it well taught and interesting and some of the modules are the same for the first year. I'd definitely recommend it.
richynomates 11-08-2004, 11:40 can part time students use the facilities at the club hallam gym? if so, don't suppose anyone knows the cost?
Kathryn3 11-08-2004, 11:43 Its Sport Hallam, the cost is the same for all students.
But they haven't put the costs for 04/05 up on the website yet, I'll let you know when they do.
Kathryn3 11-08-2004, 11:44 Whoops I lied you can see them here
http://students.shu.ac.uk/sport/prices.html
how mcuh do the hallam gyms cost as a student because as good as the uni one is its soooooo expensive. effectivley i pay over £100 to use the gym on an off peak basis which means weekdays 7-5 and weekends. if i wanted to use it in the evenings i would have to play £320 a year for a student gym, what a joke. least its nice and quiet at the mo though
Disco_Cat 11-08-2004, 21:47 going a bit off original topic but Castle college has a gym and it's dirt cheap. you only pay per month with no contracts or anything.
It is a bit scabby.
