Has anyone got the blue recycling bins yet? They haven't arrived around here yet so I was wondering if there was a hold up. I can't remember what the exact launch date for them was but I'm sure we should have them by now.

We've got them in Worksop, not very exciting though.... :)

(I'm on this forum because I'm hopefully moving to Sheffield soon, in case you were wondering)

They seem to have been wheeling them out piecemeal. I saw some being delivered over six weeks ago up Grenoside way but ours only arrived last week, and just our road, not the next road nor the one at right angles. Weird. Doesn't seem to be any pattern to it.
I'm as eco-friendly as they come and habitually recycle but I have some issues with these blue bins.
i. they are a bloody dreadful colour. Why couldn't they be green?? they stick out like sore thumbs.
ii. where are we supposed to put them? On our terraced street there is hardly room for all the regular grey wheelie bins as it is. My neighbour is 87 and simply cannot make her way along the pavement on wheelie bin day. Furthermore when they are emptied on a windy day they then skittle about like ninepins for the rest of the day, smashing into cars. I have two large dents on my car attributable to tumblewheelies. One windy day I came home and found mine thirty yards down the street, lying with five others in a distressed heap like beached whales. Now it's going to be twice as chaotic.
iii. who is going to corral strays and deter rustlers? Not everybody is that possessive about their blue bin, their having been dumped on us without a by your leave. Twice already I have seen yob scum kids rustling them away, and nobody's bothered. The blue bins are nice and clean inside, so one top trick is climb into one and have your mate push you fast downhill until you topple over. The blue bin is then left down the hill cos it's easier to nick another one at the top then to push the first one back up.
I prophesy that before too long all the parks, woods and rivers of this fair city will be strewn with blue bins, in fact I am thinking of writing Dutch and Swedish greetings in mine for when it turns up on the far side of the North Sea, having floated down the Don and done a wheelie-Kontiki.
iv. it's all I can do to remember to put the grey bin out on a Tuesday, usually it takes the noise of the dustcart to remind me. They must be joking if they think I can remember one day a month. I have programmed all the dates into my moby and stuck the sticker on my fridge but I still don't hold out much hope. Yet in our terraced street my bin stands only two yards from the edge of the curb all the time, how much more can it possibly cost for them to have a quick look in them all as they walk along?? OK if they're tucked away in big gardens fair enough to expect them to be put out but in terraced studenty streets where the bins are always visible and people tend not to lead regular lives, they're going to have to be more positive and helpful on the collection protocol if it's going to work.

Very interesting point Baublebag, we can add them to the supermarket trolley brigade that also litters our waterways.

I'd never even heard about them until reading this topic..
We haven't recieved ours yet, and I haven't seen them anywhere either. Not a bad idea, but the flaws that people are finding out with them will have to be ironed out..

We're not due ours until September!!!

PS adore the idea of tumblewheelies - what a lovely word. Baublebag, are you a writer? If not, you should be.

I'm looking forward to my blue bin as it will enable me to keep the piles of waste paper and cardboard down. I suppose we're fortunate in having somewhere off the road to keep it but I can imagine it being a bit overcrowded on some streets. Where we used to live in Crookes the bins would go out Friday morning and a few people would go home for the weekend straight from work/uni and so the bins would still be there until they returned from work/uni on the following Monday.

Is it the plan to reduce the collection cycle on the main bins if there is a noticeable reduction in usage due to the blue ones? Personally I would have prefered green but perhaps they're saving that colour for a third bin.

I currently recyle all I can but not everybody does their bit. Perhaps with the blue bins as a physical reminder it may encourage more.

I've had my blue bin for a couple of weeks.

There's still some confusion of what goes in there. For example, they say "envelopes" but what about envelopes with plastic windows? Are they assuming we'll use our common sense and not put these in, or can we actually put those in too?

(Since they say magazines, and they have staples, I assume they have some kind of "manual sorting" going on at the other end...?)

Given the poor environmental record of Onyx (Sheffield has the most polluting incinerator in the country) and their lack of enthusiam for recycling ( 'Over 60% of all your rubbish can be recycled' says my Onyx sponsored notepad - but Sheffield only recycles 5% of its waste) I would suggest that none of you hold your breath waiting - unless you want to die of asphyxiation

Got mine (live in S7). Monthly Collections, dates stuck to the bin lid.

You're right about onyx though, I used to work for EA in Templeborough - a few stories there I can't tell.

Please tell us - if it will assist local environmental organisations in overturning Sheffield City Council's decision to replace the existing incinerator ('aka cancer factory') with an even bigger one and allow expansion of the toxic waste dump at Shirecliffe.

Furthermore, who are EA?

The waste dump at Shirecliffe has now closed.
Plans are i believe are to landscape it and i have heard rumours of a planned golf course.

The blue bins have arrived in my area. They look awful. Why bright blue? GREEN represents recycling, not a dreadful bright blue that stands out like a sore thumb. Its a good idea though as it makes it easier for people to recycle. In normal bins the wasted paper and card gets burnt or just dumped, such a waste when trees have been chopped down for it, why not re-use it? These bins will encourage people to recycle. Previously my family had to take old papers and magazines to the paper bank at the nearest super market but the bins save that. All I don't understand is why bright blue?

PS. I like the ad for this thread! 8)

I'm disappointed that it doesn't includes plastic, glass or aluminum cans.

Also, thieves who thrive on identity theft industry will target these bins.

Good point - paper is from a renewable source after all, so thay could have started with summat else.

The only paper I throw away is junk mail. I think it would have made better sense to start doorstep recycling of aluminium and tins cans - I get through plenty of those for heavens sake.

I'm sure the good (cough) people (splutter) at Onyx (spit) know what they are doing (choke)

I agree - the blue colour is awful, it really stands out.

Most of the rubbish I chuck away is cardboard packaging, plastic packaging and junk mail.

I think the problem ought to be tackled at source, and the manufacturers should be made to reduce the amount of packaging used for their products.

Additionally, get rid of junk mail! It's all the same stuff: credit card promotions. I already have a credit card, I don't need a new one thanks.

Why should I have to sort through all their rubbish, I didn't ask them to send it to me. :x

I got mine about two months ago. I filled it on the first day with some cardboard from the cellar and nobody has been to collect it.

The new bins are a bit bright and an eyesore.

In Rotherham they have sone things differently. You have the mormal black bin for normal rubbish and a blue bag which is taken every two weeks for your paper. The bags are kept in doors so out of the way when you fill them up....

Well its green then blue then green then blue, so in a four week period you get the green bin collected twice.

How novel. We only have 1 recycling bin, in an awfully loud shade of blue, which is collected once a month. Not yet reached collection number 1 yet, so am yet to discover how efficient the service is.

Does anybody know are these bins chipped? I have heard that some recycling bins now contain a chip which records the weight of each bin in the bin wagon. Each bin has a individual number.

Has anyone else noticed how little rubbish the new bins hold, the council have no idea how much waste paper / cardboard/boxes,the average household can generate. My Bin is already Full to overflowing, and still another 4 weeks before it can be put out for emptying(according to council dates),At this rate I will be requiring a skip rather than a Bin.Todays rubbish is tomorrows Antiques

I think the introduction of the recycling bins is a good idea. But why couldn't they have issued black bins with a blue lid!

I hear on the grapevine that there are going to be even more bins, 1, for alumininium cans only 2,another for Glass. 3,yet another for anyting else that the council may have forgot about.:o So where does one put them all,and will the council pay storage charges accrued until they are collected.:P
