I am disappointed to read that Channel 4 have bowed to host, Des Lynam's request, to move half of the recordings to a studio near his Home Counties home.
Lynam threatened to quit the programme as he found the 200-mile trip to the Leeds studio too much for him. I think Channel 4 should have re-advertised for a replacement and told him to get lost! Didn't he realise what was involved when he accepted the job? Rather wish I hadn't bought his book now.

Is there anyone more boring than him anyway ? IMHO Paul Merton would have been a much better choice.

Steve Rider is more boring.

Alexi Sayle would be a better choice than Merton.

if u ask me Lynam is a cushdy **** who would rather b sat at home munching marmite on toast than driving 200 miles to record a ****ty show like countdown with that haggid carol vordeman and get paid probly 50 grand a show!! :hihi: thats why i prefer DEAL OR NO DEAL when i can watch it- its class!!!

When Richard Whiteley died both Des Lynam and Noel Edmunds were interviewed for the Countdown job and we all know the outcome. Can you see Deal or No Deal being the big success it is now if Des Lynam had lost the battle for Countdown and taken the 'second option' as Deal or No Deal then was?

The show would not have got past the first 6 games. Des Lynams unique style of presenting would have seen to that. He should stick to sports presenting, I think sychronised swimming, crown green bowling and cricket would have been more suited to his style-all sleepy, slow moving and boring sports.

Wasn't he involved in some alleged sex scandle thing?

What's the source for this? I know the Mirror have reported it, but at the bottom of the story:

Last night Des's agent insisted he was perfectly happy working in Leeds.
"Des has not asked for any changes," she said.
Mirror article (http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/showbiz/tm_objectid=17531514%26method=full%26siteid=94762% 26headline=lynam%2dcountdown%2dexclusive%2d%2di%2d ll%2dquit-name_page.html)

i agree with chairboy...

Lynham knew when he took the job on, how much travelling he'd need to do...

if he didn't want to travel, what's he taken the job on for?

Southern softie! ( ;) )

I picked it up from Ceefax and Yorkshire region ITV text, where I guess they'd seen the Mirror article. Time will tell who is telling the truth if the recordings move from Leeds.

And how come Noel Edmonds doesn't count as "haggid" when he's many years older than Carol Vorderman? Another forummer who's going to spontaneously combust on her 30th birthday.

Lynam decided to quit at Christmas. As the late Brian Clough once said: "He won't starve!"

Richard Whiteley was always going to be extremely difficult to follow. Lynam doesn't like the travelling to Leeds but irrespective of that, I lost a lot of interest when the programme became 45 mins and moved to mid-afternoon.
I think 45mins brings indigestion and certainly in winter, the 4.30 slot fitted in well with duties in the kitchen!

I don't watch either of them but there's no 'h' in Lynam ....

purdyamos, don't combust when you're 30 honey, these kiddies will realise what "haggid" really means when they see themselves at 40 :D

:D

I am quite familiar with the Irish name, Lynam and his book faces me as I write. If you look closer it says "Lynham leave Countdown" and of course, that should be 'leaves'.

I am ashamed of my rigourous self if they are my errors but I did read a thread, last night, with posters complaining that several thread titles have been changed by mods and I suspect this is one of them?

You have spelt it right in the body of your OP, but as several other posters on the thread have put in the 'h' I suspect you may be right, Chairboy.

"Lynam leaves Countdown" "Lynam to leave Countdown" or "Should Lynam leave Countdown?" the possibilities are endless :D

I'm just glad he's going. I don't think he ever fitted or why people call him "eye candy" even as a pensioner I say UGH.

If a show has had the same presenter for over 20 years, its bound to take a long time before any other presenter looks right in it.

Presumably it still is getting the viewers, otehrwise they would have cancelled it.....to be replaced with yet another property-related show, no doubt.

It was never going to be the same after the great Richard Whitely passed.
I aint too keen on Lynham anyway, I think he is a slime ball and a bad choice.
Des O'Connor is just as bad a choice too, why doesnt the old git give Jack Klugman his top lip back.

Poor old Des - he's got a consonant, one number from the second row and one from the third. He's got a P45.

that thud you just heard was me, falling off my seat... I like that one....

could old "deaf" O'Connor do a worse job than lynham?

I dunno, I, personally, think he has more of the "Whitely" touch, he comes across as friendlier, and more ready to chuckle... Like Whitely, he isn't afraid to poke fun at himself.

Just to resurrect this old thread.I think Des O' Connor has saved this programme.
The atmosphere has completely changed,it is now a fun place and good to watch nowadays, the only problem is the way Carol laughs at his jokes.Ah well nothing is perfect.
