my next baby is going to be called eva mae, or something equally challenging to a dyslexic. if it's a boy he's going to get A LOT of teasing.

i like lola, not sure about india though. i went to primary school with an india. she was nice enough, but her parents were bonkers, so i always think of nutbar parents when i see/hear the name india now.

Lol, I know some twins by the names of India and Erin and they were lovely so I have a good view of the name at the moment.
Secretly hoping that my friends baby will be a girl but she was determined not to find out in advance... tick tick tick tick c'moooooooon India Lola or Devon Heathcote which will it be?

I like India as that is the name of one of my friends children (the others are called Trinity, Pagan and Calixa :)) I am not so keen on Lola but everyone to their own.

Devon I haven't heard before as a name - for some reason it makes me think of VW campers - not sure why! Heathcote - nah, sorry don't like that.

i really like Ruby, but my other halfs surname is wright so he says it will sound silly. Ruby Wright....

We just cant agree on a name

Zebra
05-03-2007, 12:58 PM
I've heard of Devon before but it's not my cup of tea, I prefer Heathcliffe (as in Wuthering Height's) to Heathcote but it's the fathers traditional family name.
Still hoping for a girl - that way I can pass on all our girls bits and pieces ( which would be appreciated - not just me foisting stuff on them!) and a playmate when we see them - which is quite a lot.

True but you could add a name to Ruby to make it less short and therfore contrast to Wright (I have that same trouble and my first name is short but it works well). Two short sounds for names can seem too stark but it begins to roll off the tongue rather well as time passes.
Ruby-Mae, Ruby-Ann, Ruby-Nicole etc etc.
Alternately you could double barrel your surnames So Ruby Fairfax-Wright for example (I don't know yours so using an idea), that's what we did for our daughters and it's not as clumsy as it felt when we first suggested it :)

Erin Roe - Sounds like a FISH !!! :o

Yeah I can see how that might not be the best name at school. Sheffieldish for herring roe......
Like the use of Jodi as a middle name.
Our poor girls ended up with far too many names as Mr Z added another one each when we went to register them, I kinda minded and kinda didn't.
Their first middle names are Mia and Electra, I wanted Electra as a first name but Mr Z wasn't having any of it.

currently thinking of Poppy for a girl a and Malachi for a boy, really like the idea of using their grandparents names as middle names too. but i will wait until i meet them as they may not suit these names. had really like Milly but we look after a friend's dog which is called that and it has changed my relationship to that name now! also like Anoukh but probably only if it was a girl with darker colouring that my husband has, if they come out blond like me it may not work.....ho hum....

anoukh is pronounced annook (long o sound), i thought it was either north african or eskimo but have googled it and it can be spelt with or without an h and seems to be women from france and germany called it so....sorry to be a bit vague. and was it the name of the girl's toy kangaroo in the film Chocolat? not sure

If it's your first keep an open mind we couldn't agree on a name DH liked Emma I wanted Ruby so when I went for the section we had a sweep stake and Ruby won but when she came out she looked like and Emma hence we have an Emma.

If it had been a boy we wanted Charlie or Jack.

Also Charlotte Church also said she had loads of names but picked Ruby because of dd's ruby red lips when she was born.

I love unusual names, our twins have uncommon names but not unusual. But more wild and wacky middle names - including Electra! I wanted Electra as a fisrt name but OH was adamant they would get picked on.
Just been working out character names with my drama kids today and we've got Hope and Kezia contrasted with previous characters Felicity, Faith, Meredith (Merry) and Scarlett.
I know a Tegan, an Isabelle, a Stefania, Kayleigh (of course) and a Cara which all stand out.
I also like names with sophistication and a light feel on the tongue, like Stephanie and Sophie or Sofia, Sapphire and Selina. Natalia seems sophisticated to me too.
Always had a passion for Jonquil too but my OH was having none of it! Only recently heard of someone with that name but it is the name of a flower too.
My god-daughter is called Nisha which I like and Naomi was a contender for one of our girls too.
There, that's my whole name barrage left out for all to see :)

We had a list of names for boys and girls, and the girl's top name was Beth. Then during labour, I turned to my DH and said that I really liked the midwife's name, Rowan and he agreed and we said we would call her that, if she was a girl. So our little girl is Rowan Amy - which surprised everyone as we hadn't mentioned it. Funny thing was though, I kept calling her Natasha the next day :loopy:

I also like Bracken, Autumn and recently heard a girl called Meadow.

I like Madison but it's getting to be too popular.
There's were 3 Claire's in my class at school which I thought was pretty sad, all of them hated their name as a result.
I know 3 Madisons under the age of 3... I suspect Madison is the next Claire.

Hmmm, thinking about it, someone I know who is pregnant has the name Madison Brooke lined up - that'll make 4.

Here's the top 100 baby names compiled from the social securitu register Madison is 3rd, I'd be avoiding it like the plague if I wanted something unusual: http://www.babynamesgarden.com/top100.aspx
And backed up here as the most common names for babies in 2007: http://ezinearticles.com/?Top-Ten-Baby-Names-&id=574172

However, I don't think there will be many Tao's or Roshunda's per class in 2012 http://www.babynamesgarden.com/unusual-baby-names.aspx

if you like Harry so much, why not call your baby that regardless of whether it's a girl or a boy? I really liked Harriet, but m'chap wasn't 'aving any of it. I really like Henrietta (Henry) too, but again - he thought it was weird.

I love Libby for a girl. But I think you have to consider how silly some of these new ''trendy'' names will sound in a few years.... ie- very silly! so if/ when I have a little girl I would stick to names such as Sophia, Maria, Elissia - they are nice names but will not age and sound stupid with time. But whatever floats your boat I suppose

No, Lily Rose isn't too flowery at all. ;) We would have had Mae instead except that my gran is a Rose and she's someone that babybaby should emulate as her outlook on life is fantastic.

Also, just so all you ladies know for the future, Lily is spelt with 1 'l', unless you're thinking of the pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly.

I love some of the old classical names like Annabel, Amelia, Helena. Someone mentioned Annis, thats really old fashioned, but its nice too. For something linking to nature, there's always Flora? (Very Scottish) Looking back in our family tree we have an Emily Evangeline, an Eleanor and a Lily, but her second name was Gertrude, which isn't my favourite.

I think that much depends on a) your surname, b) what style of name/spelling you're comfortable with, and c) what the baby looks like when he/she is born

Our grand daughter is Madeline Eve. If she had been a boy, Harry was one of two names they had chosen.

So I'm still stuck on a name for my baby girl, due in nine weeks, and we are no further on than we were twenty weeks ago.

Baby girl's nickname is Lulu, which we love, but don't want that as her "real name" as we think it is perfect for when she is young but perhaps not so great for when she is older.

So what do you think?

There are too many children being named Summer, Sky, ...... ?apple?

or Layla, or Lily... they're quite similar to Lulu?

I like Elizabeth, but then again, it's a family name, so I'm biased (hehe)

For short, you could have an eliza, a liz, a lisa, beth, ellie, or even "zib" (a friend's wife, who was an Elizabeth was nicknamed that one)

Autumn I don't think quite works, for a child born in late spring... doesn't quite scan, somehow if I'm honest. (might have been great if child was born in Autumn)

My DIL was going to call my first grandchild "ebony", until I pointed out to them that said child would certainly be pale of skin, and fair of hair, so wouldn't really "go"...

Or even an Izzie, which links to the Isabella name a little. I've known a few Elizabeths and we've all gone by different short versions of the name (Liz x2, Lizzie and a Beth); the full version's only been used to admonish, or by either mum or dad who refuse to shorten the name they'd lovingly chosen lol.

I agree! I work in a Reception class and always feel sorry for the Benjamins and Elizabeths compared to the Jacks and Amys when it comes to writing their names! Also working in school you have to cross out most of the names in the Baby-Names book before you can seriously pick a name!! ;) (I'd have serious problems naming a child nowadays!) My mum had a horrible child in her class 17 years ago called Samantha, and was beside herself when she found her first grandchild was going to be called just that!! I think Isabella is lovely, I like the shortened Izzy. Happy choosing! X

If you like Lulu, why not call her that? It's only a name now, but by the time your daughter has started showing signs of her personality it'll start being her name, and in a few years you won't be able to imagine her not being called Lulu. Why not just go with it? I know I voted for Lily, but since you like it so much I'd just go with Lulu...it's not so unusual that it's weird, and it's not common, so it might be just right. You could always give her a 'normal' middle name instead as a safety measure.

Blimey, I like some of those but my feelings are very different, my name is unusual and for a brief time in secondary school I wanted to be something normal like Claire, there were loads of Claire's throughout my school life.
Now I am sooooo grateful for not having a common name.
My advice is to try all your favourite names with her surname to be, as initials, with variations on middle names and check those initials too, it's no good being like some idiot who named his son Christopher Robert Andrew Paston.... CRAP. Though I should point, it was done deliberately, which is even sadder. He thought his son could have it written on the side of a work van or something - C.R.A.P electricals for example.
Also, I had passions for the names Electra and Jonquil since I was very young, amongst others.
My second daughter is named after another of my more normal favourites but not a common one, my first daughter is named after a more recent favourite but again not common. One of the middle names is Electra and it suits her (naughty twingle 2 in case anyone wanted to hazard a guess!)

These are my favourites now. I love love love Grey but you are the only other human alive that agrees with me. :hihi: Its so unusual its not actually a name. Except there was a film in which Heather Graham was a lesbian called Grey

Rich has firmly put his foot down and said no to Grey, although I'm still hoping he'll see the light. :hihi:

I was gutted a few years ago when Autumn started being used as a name, like I said I'd baggsied it twenty three years ago ( when did I get so old?)

And Isabella, we are not sure of as two years ago we had a miscarriage of a little girl who we had decided we were going to call Isabella Skye.

My surname is a very heavy, bleurgh sounding name beginning with D.

I don't know why but I also keep going back to Elizabeth, for the very fact that it has so many shortened versions and it has a certain elegance.

hennypenny
18-03-2008, 11:19 AM
I have always liked the name Louisa which could be shortened to Lulu.

I don't like Elizabeth simply because it is my middle name and I haven't ever taken to it. I do like Libby though which is an unusual shortening of it.

My friend has named her daughter Tula which I didn't like at first, but it has grown on me - you could nickname her Lulu from that.

I also like Lois which is a bit different.

If you do decide to home educate then unusual names are the norm, and the spelling out in class won't matter ;)

This is my favourite baby name site

http://www.babynamewizard.com/namevoyager/lnv0105.html

It takes a minute to load, but then if you type in any letter, it shows you all the names that have been registered in the last 100 years and their relative popularity. Autumn for instance peaked at nearly 1% of girl babies named in 2005, whereas Lulu was very popular in 1880 :)

If Grey strikes you so much then use it, maybe as her middle name.
I agree Isabella perhaps should be saved or used again as a middle name.
OUr girls have 3 names and a doubel barrelled surname so 5 in total, poor things. We'll encourage them only to use the first and last two and sod the big brother approach where people insist on using all names.
I have a name I'd like to call a third daughter, if we have one, but I daren't share it as I want to to remain unique, I can't even find it on a baby names site, nor any other name site.
Autumn Grey is interesting though it could be a good name for a racehorse! Lulu could be used as a middle name and reverted to when or if suited and she doesn't have to broadcast it either.
Isabella Grey... I'd save the Isabella though. Grey Isabella sounds like someone who is depressed.
Grey Lulu.....not sure that works.
Autumn Lulu is quite sweet.
I like Autumn best I think, with Grey or Lulu as a second name or even stick bits together and go with LuBella/Lu-Bella to make a new middle name which is a nod to your first daughter and incorporates Lulu.
I think you're on your way to making a decision, Lily and Jennifer have been mentioned less later on thread.

If Charlie was a girl, he would've been Ruby-Mae Zandra, Or Henrietta Grace. Out of the names that're up, i'd deffo pick Lily, but i'd spell it Lillie (Not many Lily's are spelt that way) :)

Hi Innocence XX
Giving a name to a pet first doesn't mean you can't go on to use it for a child's name, after all Sam, don't forget my first hamster was called Sammy!! :hihi:

Hey Olliekitten, I was soooo excited when I heard about Lulu (your baby, not Sam's cat...!), she is the luckiest baby to have you for a mummy, and I sincerely hope that when she's older she is as lucky in the 'teacher' department as Sam was! You'll always be one of our favourite people!
Lots of love and luck with Lulu X

I love Lulu.

She'll always be Lulu to me.

It's significantly different to any other name - and this baby will be significantly different to any other baby, because Mummy and Daddy went through so much to get her.

So, what did Rich think?

Rich has been too busy getting run over to give much more thought to names. He was going to make a comment on the thread but hes still in too much pain at the moment.

He'll be better soon I hope, poor love x

I saw he'd been hit, didn't realise the timing had been so close with the thread.
Hope he's ok.
You two are really going through the mill at the moment aren't you?
There was someone selling horse brasses on the car boot thread, maybe you could ask em for a horseshoe or 10 :)
Fingers crossed for an easy breezey rest of pregnancy and a swift recovery for Rich :)
