just been reading through this thread and some of the names - ! My OH likes traditional names so I went along with it with the first two but put my foot down with the third as I'm sick of meeting every other kid with the same names lol, so she ended up a Nataliya Rose (she was born at christmas). I'm a Leila (pronounced Layla) so I'm used to having a fairly unusual name.
Other names that were always on my shortlists were: Caitlyn Summer (shortened to Caity), Leonie, Liberty, Mia, Rosalyn, Rosalie, Evelyn, Genesis (shortened to Genny) Christiana (MIL is Christine) Naomi, Ashleen (I like the irish spelling of Aisling as well). I have neices called Lacey and Dakota, love those as well! Good luck and if I think of anymore I'll add them here!

if my bump was a girl my top girls names were Matilda or Maggie

HeatherKay
29-05-2008, 12:58
I like Heather :D

My girls (I have three)

Kelsie- means a small hamlet , scottish. Variant : Kelsey (usually for boy)

Kiri - means skin in Maori (sung during the rugby chanting the 'all blacks' do)

Kiana-means Leopard in Kenya (I was told). Variants : Kyana,Quiana,Kayanna.

Their middle names have meaning too

Candy-as she was sweet as (emphasis on was :D just kidding!)

Honey- she smelt like warm honey spread on toast (she had dirtied her nappy :gag: but parents heh?)

Caramelle- After someone called Carmel I admired.

They also retain the Kay as a hyphenation to their first names, this is because of a family tradition, Kay was a family surname.

All three love their unusual names.

Don't worry so much about the name, one will come to you that you have never even thought of and you will love it. That's what happened to us, we didn't have any names we were struck on, but found the perfect name during labour, as our Midwife was called Rowan and we both loved it and luckly she was a girl so we used it. It suits her as well. We used our original choice as her second name - but secretly I'm glad as I'm not so keen on it.

I remember someone saying to me "think about when they're a bit older and you're shouting their name out in the supermarket" Some of the names are lovely but it's got to be something you're comfortable with and which also goes well with your surname.

I like Summer for a girl as well as Lily (that was my grandmothers name and she hated it) but I always thought it was lovely. A friend of mine called her daughter Brogan and it really suits her.

Choose a name that is a-easy for them to learn to spell, and b- a name that they can grow up with and will suit them as much when they are a 70 yr old than as a babe in arms.

We had the same problem when I was pregnant. We didnt have any name at all that we really liked for a girl just boys names and luckly we had a boy. This time we have girls names we like and only 1 boys name. But by the time I get pregnant again It will probably be a different story.

Have you tried buying a baby naming book or getting 1 from the libary. We bought a book and it had some crazy names in it, like Moonunit, whitelighting, woof, etc..

My little pumpkin is called Molly Rose. I have loved the name Molly for a very long time so when I found out I was having a girl there was no complications in choosing her name. Her middle name was a bit difficult though. We tried all sorts of combinations, saying them out loud to see if they had that ring to them, but Molly Rose was the best!

Might be a long shot, but does anyone have any ideas for "different" girls names? Only got less than 4 weeks before induction and have NO IDEAS whatsoever! Everything I've suggested so far, OH doesn't like, and he's not come up with anything I like either! I like things that are a little different, but not too "out there." As an idea, we called our last daughter Kennedy.... :help:

I really like Katie for a girl, but its out of fashion at the mo, so I cant call it my little un (if bump is a girl)Wouldn't it be better to call her something you like, rather than something that is in fashion? She'll have the name for life, not just for "this season".

No final decisions made yet but think we're gonna call our twin girls after their grandmas' so they'll be really old fashioned! Elizabeth and Dolorez. Bet they'll get abbreviated to something like Lizzie and Lola immediately though....

"Peta", perhaps, or "Petra" as a variant on Peter.

There was a programme on TV recently about a little girl with primordial dwarfism, She was like thumbelina!! (Bless her!!) her name was Kennadie (again slight variant in the spelling).

I still like the classic names, like Chloe, and Grace. I like Verity and Ailish (verity means "Truth", and Ailish or Eilish, which is the alternative spelling, is Gaelic for Elizabeth)

I still love the idea of having a little girl called Eiofe (Eve, in Gaelic)

There's always one isn't there. Comes on a thread trying to be funny. If you can't say anything sensible don't say owt at all I say pal. Mind you, at least you didn't suggest calling it Bruno, can't think of a worse name.

I can identify with bethsmummy's thoughts, what with a certain Miss Price and her publicity hungry antics somewhat "sullying" the associations, what was a nice name.

I also like Eleanor and Eloise, as names.

...I am expecting a girl in November and have no idea what to call her.
Hubby and I can't agree and I find girls name so hard.
I like unusual names so want to avoid ones that are popular at the moment, not that I have anything against traditional names but I like something a bit unique.
I am fed up of trawling baby name sites so can anyone give me inspiration?!
I have 2 boys at the moment - Joshua Ryan and Caden Stanley.
Surname begins with L so don't want a first name with l's in it as it doesn't flow very well!
Thanks for any suggestions.....! xx:D

I like Ava, too, as a name, you probably don't want to go down the route of the "Moon Unit Bluebell" even though you want an unusual name.

Grace? Poppy? Verity? (means truth) Ailish? (Yes, I know it's an L name, but try it with your surname to see if it flows, you never know?) (Ailish/ eilish is gaelic for Elisabeth) I like Keavey ? Keeva (another Irish name) Megan? (I always wanted a Megan Eilish and a Verity Grace)

Olivia? (livvy?)or what about Cassidy (originates from a Gaelic name meaning "curly-headed")

Hi all. So i have a little unusual query. I am a strong believer in the meaning of names as well as their sound.
We were brainstorming baby girl names and we came across a beautiful name, Mishel which means "light" in Arabic. We believe the pronunciation is pretty much like "Michelle" and so we're thinking of retaining this popular spelling i.e. MICHELLE.
Here is the confusing bit: the meaning of the name Michelle is entirely different from the meaning of Mishel. Michelle apparently means "who is like God."
And we're confused. I don't prefer the latter meaning; we are opting for the latter spelling because it is easy, common and elegant. But would that change the spirit/meaning of the original Arabic name that we started out with?
Crazy query but really important to us. Any insights please? Thanks!

There is another Arabic name, meaning "light" which is is "Noor".

Michelle comes from the Hebrew, meaning "who is like God?" (put as a question, "who could possibly be like the LORD? rather than as a statement "someone who is like the LORD)

I do think that the meaning of a name is very important.

You also have to think that this child will have to carry that name for the rest of their life, so I believe it's important to give the child a name it can live with.

If the child is a girl, the other consideration is thinking how her name may "go" with a future husband's name, if she is to go down the route of taking her husband's name. (Not all will do that, I know a few married women who kept their "maiden" names for religious reasons or for their professional life)

Thanks! But 'God' is 'the way, the truth and the light', so you CAN call her 'Michelle' :)

I'm not a god botherer, but I believe in 'God' as a positive force invoked when anybody puts their mind to positive thoughts towards others - whatever you care to name it/him, so apply that to your name interpretation

Thankyou, guys. I feel a lot lighter. Hubby loves this name too ... we're going for Michelle the spelling, but in our hearts , the meaning remains "light."
:hihi:

We've just named our baby girl Esmae (pronounced Ez-may).
I too wanted to be a little different!
We also gave her a more traditional middle name - Rose

I love this name, gorgeous!

My almost 1 year old is Emily Isabella

Other names we thought about were Scarlett, Lucy, Lilly and Cora

My little girl is Robyn Sophia (her dad is part Greek on his mum's side of the family).

I also quite liked Kaitlyn Emily. Never chose a boy's name, even before I knew I was having a girl.

named my daughter Laurie, wanted something a little different but not nutty.. apparantly it's a very popular name in the States! not a big fan of, and don't really understand the sudden popularity of the the hyphenated 'Lily - Mae' type first names, my daughters middle name is George and I'm constantly having to correct people "No, not Laurie-George, just Laurie.. middle name George. No hyphen"
