View Full Version : Football on television midweek
Hi. Just wondered if there is anyone on the forum the same as me who think there is too much football on television midweek evenings. This week it was on last night for 2hours 8-00 till 10-00 and tonight Wednesday on again at the same time. In days gone by it would be on all Saturday afternoons and that was it, as far as I am concerned those days can't come back quick enough.
Perhaps sadly for you, they're not going to. There's too much football for it all to be on Saturday afternoons now. I suppose the best thing for you would be to not watch it, then you'll have nothing to complain about.
A.B.Yaffle 09-08-2006, 10:23 I think we could with a bit more football on terrestrial TV. The tiny amount shown still doesn't compete with the many hours per week of soaps and reality "competitions".
Nope i dont think so, i love football  xx

Too right.
All these people that complained when the World Cup was on saying that Emmerdale etc was on later. Come on, the World Cup is every 4 years, soaps are 4+ nights a week.
I'd much rather see more football than more rubbish Reality TV.

Indeed, i shall break it down.
2 matches of football in 1 week.
On the other hand we have...
Eastenders, hollyoaks, coronation st, neighbours, home and away, and thats just to name a few and their on many times a week. :)
Thank god for the internet, I can ignore football, cricket, tennis and all the other annoyances the main channels insist on showing. I dont know why I bother with a TV at all, but then again the missis watches it.
CaptainSwing 09-08-2006, 10:39 The tiny amount shown ...
That's right - in the last year they've shown hardly any football on TV, apart from the World Cup, the Premiership, the European Cup, the Champions' League, the FA Cup, the Italian football, the Spanish football, the Portuguese football, the African Nations' Cup and the odd friendly. I believe there was even a whole day last month when there wasn't any on at all!
There are around 300+ TV channels to chose from, about 20 of them show sport.

on normal terrestrial TV there is barely any football shown.
we only see highlights from the premiership, we dont see any italian/spanish/portuguese football, no african nations football. friendlies are non existent (barring some bizarre reason channel 5 decided to start showing them)
world cup is per 4 years,
the european cup/champions league are major dates in football.
i dont believe that 3 games in midweek (this sometimes happens, but only when champs league/uefa cup coincide) and some highlights from the prem and leagues below is too much coverage for football. we also occasionally are treated to fa cup coverage, but that sadly doesnt start properly till january
BasilRathbon 09-08-2006, 10:58 If it wasn't for football there'd be no point owning a television.
Mind you I wish they'd show proper games from Leagues 1 & 2 rather than meaningless Champions League games.

Tell me ...... "And now on BBC1, 'Z-List Celebrity Roof Thatching'. After last week's ladder mishaps, will (insert random former Grange Hill actor, but not one of those who got any lines to speak) gain enough points to carry on? Its your votes that will count! While on BBC2, we continue with 'The Eton Wall Mess Game'. Antony Worrall-Thompson creates a giant Mess for two university lacrosse sides to play the Wall Game against. Will there be a winner, or will the contestants come back next week?"
<flicks to ITV>
"And next on ITV1 is 'Complaining: The Truth'; this week, (insert random former actor from Brookside) reconstructs your recorded calls to the Gas boards. We find out who was fibbing to get up to £7.50 falsely removed from their bills. On ITV2, the bloke from the Just For Men adverts will be presenting half an hour of people who shouldn't be allowed on the planet, let alone behind the wheel of a car driving through every US state "with no regard for other road users". And on ITV3, an extra chance to see 'Coronation Street' from 1977. Consternation in the Rovers as Stan Ogden realises that the toilet leads directly to Albert Tatlock's kitchen.
<flicks to 4>
"It's time for "Big Brother's Little Brother in a Shipwreck" ......."
<remembers why the radio is usually on but tries 5 anyway>
"And now, 'Celebrity Crionics - LIVE!'. Anthea Turner will take us through the process of defrosting famous people. This week, she will try to bring herself back to life ......."
<slings TV through the window complains bitterly that the home Tests aren't on anymore, let alone football, really, puts the radio on and calms down slightly as at least there is a bit of sport on 5 Live>
And people complain about football for a couple of hours, for a couple of days ......... sheesh ........
.......... well, break over, back to work .........

Only if you take the Australian Megalomaniac's shilling ...... free to air, there are precisely bugger all sports channels.

Absolutely.
Absolutely.
Oy - I quite like the Champions league :)
Kisisng that trophy was an honour, an absolute honour!!!
CaptainSwing 09-08-2006, 11:24 no african nations football
That was on BBC 3 which is free-to-air (if you can get a digital signal - you pay for it out of your licence fee even if you can't).
I was sure I'd seen the southern European football in listings for free-to-air channels, and that I'd stumbled across Premiership matches at times (maybe they were just highlights), but I'll bow to your superior knowledge.

There are highlights of Dutch matches at silly past stupid o'clock on five. Sometimes.

Better still, leave her frozen
I can't see the problem with a couple of hours football on tv a week. It's very easy to ignore if you don't want to watch it.
Like bigbrother, I try to ignore that. Even though it is on for erm...16 weeks? 50 weeks? In fact, I don't think it's ever not been on. As I said though, I just choose not to watch it, which is fine until people start talking to me about it. I am starting to master the art of ignoring friends who talk at me about it.
