I have telewest wireless broadband that connects to the internet through what i thought was a router (they call it an access point !) thats plugged into their set top box. This "thing"-identical to a router and made by netgear says underneath it can only be used with one pc
we now have 2 laptops which we wish to use at the same time to connect to the internet
Telewest says impossible but off record told I need a dsl router
Any members found a way to do his Thanks

What model is the Netgear access point? Will help confirm that it is just an AP and not a router.

You will basically need a wireless broadband router - any of these should be fine

The Netgear Wireless Router they give you is specifically locked down so you can only use the one wireless connector they give you to connect to it. You need to replace it with a real wireless router and the best recommendation is:

Linksys WRT54G

I just hooked our cable broadband modem to a router I bought from p.c world, We have two laptops and a p.c running off it at times, It had a few glitches to start with but was fairly easy to install and was only 40 quid.

Thanks everyone
Underneath the "router/access thing" it says "blueyonder broadband" " this can only be used with one pc" and a number MR814v2tw
Honeyplanet - when you say hooked our broadband modem into a router do you mean plug the new router into telewests set top box as the thing they sent us is plugged into now

You have exactly the same equipment I've seen before - get a Linksys WRT54G and all will be well.
