View Full Version : What's the cheapest way to get to Sweden?
Classic Rock 01-07-2004, 15:06 Karlskrona in Sweden?
I'm thinking of popping over to visit some relatives I've not seen in ages. Karlskrona is in the south of Sweden. I've tried a couple of websites for a random date in August and I'm looking at anywhere between £670 - £1200 for a return flight.
Ouch.
What this needs is someone with time on their hands who could logically think of routes and methods of getting there which will be cheaper than the above. Before someone starts on me, this isn't total laziness, I've had a go and will continue to have a go to find this info, but the more tackling the problem, the merrier.
Karlskrona is near to Copenhagen, miles and miles away from Stockholm (train fares are double ours by the sounds of it and coaches are slow and go around all the houses).
You've got to be really bored or someone who likes logical thinking and/or knows some really good websites for cheap flights to odd places.
theflyingfish 01-07-2004, 15:24 esayjet fly to copenhagen from Newcastle and Stanstead.

Classic Rock 01-07-2004, 15:58 Still gotta travel from Denmark though....
Anyone any ideas on how to find out the cost of a train in Scandanavia?

^^^ That any use??
Isnt there a bridge that links Sweden to Denmark?
Phanerothyme 01-07-2004, 17:06 get a ryanair flight to copenhagen, get the train from the airport to malmo central , change trains to karlskrona and you'll be there in a jiffy.
what are you doing in my beloved motherland CRB?
Walking, I find, is a very frugal way to get around.
Sorry, couldn't help that.
noseyrosie 01-07-2004, 21:56 Sod this - my mum had a £70 return to Malmo a few weeks ago from Stanstead with RyanAir. Hope this helps

Hitching is cheaper - less worn-out shoes
(and entirely possible, though nothing is guaranteed)
If the thread title is taken literally, you could always try a rubber dingy across the North Sea.

Thinking along those lines, even cheaper way . . . . Swim across the North Sea.

For further pointers on this method I suggest you read Catch 22.
t020.. I thought you would have suggested walking ;)
Anyway, more usefully,
DFDS Ferries (http://www.dfdsseaways.co.uk/dfdsseaways/en) from Newcastle to Gothenberg (£49 each way), then the train.

yes, as a dingy, I expect, is more expensive than shoes.
Classic Rock 05-07-2004, 13:02 Stansted is a pain in the neck to get to. Would much rather fly from Manchester....for the extra money spent on the flight it more than outweighs the cost of getting to Stansted and back. Nevertheless I'll not wipe it off the drawing board altogether.
I got quite excited thinking about a couple of nights in Copenhagen en route to Karlskrona.....so quite fancy that route.
Phen - I'm half Swedish, I have family over there who I've not seen in years am thought I'd go over....trust them to live in an awkward place! Could be worse, they used to live right up the top near the artic circle!

I don't think I have ever paid more than 15 quid (35 including airport taxes) for a return. and I have flown out for less than a quid.
Seems they couldn't keep the prices right down.
CRB flying from manchester is convenient to get to but at least £100 a ticket more unless you can get a great deal (which I don't rule out).
Cheapest way is to go by road in an economical car (citroen ax diesel - honda 90 moped, suzuki swift etc) via dover. That way you could drive right past denmark and catch a ferry to ystad from gdansk or somewhere before heading north.
Ni snackar Svenska kanske? Är där någon annan där ute som gör det? Skulle vara roligt at umgås lite - lite språk övning för mig.
noseyrosie 05-07-2004, 22:11 Have to say RyanAir are nothing if not changeable.
When we went to Stockholm last October it was 1p return the first day (swear dahhhnnn), and by the time I'd phoned my friend to see if he was ok to come with us, it'd gone up to about £50. Bizarre.
