Hello all, I need some advice. I am moving from the U.S to Sheffield next month. My family has found a place to live in Bromhill (my husband will be working at the University) and now I would like to know about the area. Where to eat, where to avoid, good shops, good preschools, etc. We have two kids (4 and 1). I won't be working so I would love advice on what to do with the kids during the day as well.

Thanks for any help. We are really looking forward to our big move.

Genevieve

Where to eat - well in broomhill there's
Thyme Cafe - very good
Bahr Nor (sp?) - thai restaurant. It's small and simple but the food is good there.
For a light lunch there's Vittles.

If you wonder up the hill to crosspool there's Thyme restaurant. Superb food and well worth the walk.

Crookes has a good selection of restaurants as well.

If you want to do a local shop for food, then for veg I'd go to Just Natural in Crookes, and for meat to Roney's in Crosspool.

I think you might be better putting this in the 'general Sheffield chat' area of the forum as it gets more views than this area. if you send a PM to one of the moderators, they will move it for you. The mods I can think of are sidla, tony, geoff, lickszz, max, rpg and moon maiden (sorry if I missed any one out). I think tony might be best as he seems to live on the forum. (correct me if i'm wrong people)

Even though i live quite close to broomhill, i've never actually lived in the area, so I'm not the best person to give advice on shops and restaurants. I do know it's a nice area, close to parks and the countryside. It's also close to the university and is on a main bus route, so getting into city centre easy.

PS. welcome to the forum and to Sheffield (in advance). You've come to the right place for information.

The Classic Rock Bar is situated in the ward of Broomhill. If you love live music and good beer at fair prices we'd love to meet you.

There's lots of things you could do.

For food there are a number of places in Broomhill, although I think Crookes is slightly better (especially Spinrocs Tapas Bar - always a few kids in there).

I'd make sure you get out to the Peak National Park as much as possible as there's lots of things to see/do.

There are lots of parks not very far from Broomhill (walking distance), the botanical gardens and endcliffe park being the closest - the latter has a childrens play park).

I think there are various mother and baby/toddler groups that meet up - but not having kids I don't know much about them - but someone on here well.

There's a start anywhere - I can't think of many places in Broomhill to avoid - it can get a bit studenty though!

Buon Cibo is a very nice italian restaurant - v slow service but only because everything is cooked to order, and it is excellent. Bring your own wine as well.

Avoid Balti King Indian restaurant, but Manzils does very good Indian food to take away.

Reno's for Coffee.

Thyme Cafe and Thyme restaurant both excellent (although the latter is expensive)

Broomhill is fairly unique in that you can get almost everything you need without having to go a massive supermarket in a car - there is a post office, vegetable shop, hardware store, a bookshop and several second hand bookshops, bakers a well stocked supermarket etc.

Whenever I walk past Refresh coffee shop there are always mums in there with young kids - maybe there is like a Broomhill mum's group or something?

http://www.broomhillonline.org.uk/

This site is fairly comprehensive. There is a list of local schools as well, with links to their websites.

It is a nice place to live - enjoy.

Also - pubs aren't great in Broomhill, head towards Ranmor and go in the Ranmoor Inn, if that's your thing.More info about Broomhill

Don't worry, I'll let you off.....should've read my first post on this thread though. I guess we are right on the edge of Broomhill bordering Ecclesall....but if I mention that I'm Ecclesall, I get firmly put in my place by someone who shall not be named. I know my place!
