View Full Version : Can anyone recommend a shop selling contemporary Sheffield Cutlery?

I've been looking for some new cutlery, and being a Sheffield lad I'd like to buy local. But I've been hunting all over for some reasonably-priced modern Sheffield cutlery and can't find anything. No wonder Sheffield's cutlery trade is on its a*** if all it produces is old-fashioned stuff for grannies and stately homes.

Can anyone recommend any cutlers or shops where I might be able to get something a bit contemporary and made in Sheffield? (I've checked out Sheffield Scene, Don Alexander, David Mellor and Lincoln House, and no joy there).

Thanks!

Isn't there a clearance shop in Orgreave somewhere?

Aren't Viner's a Sheffield firm?
http://www.oneida.co.uk/shop.php?gettype=&getbrand=2&limittobrand=1&getcat=&higher=&lower=&sessionid=&listtype=&thisuserid=

And If it's cheap you're after....
http://www.oneida.co.uk/shop.php?f=moreinfo&id=187&gettype=&getbrand=&getpattern=&lower=&higher=&listtype=&clearance=1&sessionid= reduced from £160 to £49 - and that isn't a typo ;)

Mortons is still there but its small and specialist. Try John Lewis, they have loads.

Viners have been bought out by Oneida who are based at Brent Cross.
The Orgreave shop you're thinking of is Deeley's now Arthur Price. They're usually quite good.

Isn't Richardson a Sheffield make ?
They do the 'SO.EAT' selection of modern cutleries.
http://www.richardson-sheffield.co.uk/flash.htm

I have a few of their cook's knives. It's pretty good. Their So.EAT selection is okay, but not as designer-esque as some of the other brands.

I'm sure David Mellor produced some cutleries before too. Maybe he designed some of them for another company to produce. I'm sure I'm seen his design products from a home magazine before.

With such a traditional background, I was quite surprised that there aren't many design students from Sheffield carrying on producing this kind of tradition !

In Sheffield Scene they have a brochure where you can order more modern designs apart from the ones in the shop but they are pricy.

And you would be surprised how many canteens of cutlery that place actually sells. That shop certainly isn't struggling to pull customers in from all over the country. And I would know, my mother in law works there!

By the way, John Lewis gets it's stock from the Sheffield Scene workshop, and it marks it's prices up way higher than Sheffield Scene.......

But I didn't tell you that....:suspect:

PS I've Goggled 'Pride' cutlery, it can still be bought on line.

I still have some Walker/Hall cutlery from when I worked there, the patterns called 'Pride', I think you would call it contempory style, it was a big seller back then.

I think we should all make an effort to buy Sheffield cutlery, even if we have to spend weeks looking round factory shops and posting on here and doing all the things you wouldn't do if you weren't bothered about the city!

Thanks for all the suggestions. I'm on the hunt!

I agree. I sometimes wanna buy something "Made in Sheffield" for friends as gifts, souvenirs and things. I always go into Sheffield Scene, but nothing is ever really useful, you know ? By that, I mean, nothing that is traditionally made in Sheffield, but has a model design or usage. The only thing that I thought was worth buying was a letter opener...

All the other cutleries were of an old design, and probably needed polishing. There's a few tankers, and keyrings, and all that... but, nothing I can get for the 20-30 something age groups.

Unless I've been looking in the wrong places.

There's a few contemporary items in Millenium Gallery by David Mellor too.

I have so fallen out with Richardson

I bought some supposedly stainless steel knives of theirs from Debenhams. I know now why they were in the sale  They've rusted  Somebody on another thread explained to me that they now import crappy steel from somewhere so it's not geinuine Sheffield Stainless

and they've gone blunt stupidly quick

Rumour has it that David Mellor buys his steel from Germany, so the question is , whether or not it can be considered to be made in Hathersage or not.

Steel is brought in these days in the most part but completed and assembled in Sheffield

If you still have the original boxes and the cutlery is in good condition it is now becoming collectors items. Pride is still made at Hathersage but David Mellor is in a home as he now suffers from Alzeimhers.

Good info, thanks, no don't have the boxes, just odd pieces.

And yes Strix, stainless steel is not what it use to be, some of mine rusted too, if I didn't wipe them completely dry right away, they would get tiny rust spots on them and I shouldn't have to do that to s/steel.

Lazarus would you happen to know the name of a designer from Sheffield that designed a very plain looking silver plated tea service that I have. I know he's a Sheffielder as I saw the exact same set in the Weston park museum about 20 years ago, saying he was a Sheff designer, don't remember the name though, might have been Peter ??

Anyhow, maybe some one on the SF will know, I have sent photos of it to the Sheffield......something society (forgot that name too) they didn't know anything about it.

Thanks, Poppins

Says walker& halls then at the side of that inside a small oval it looks like a flag and I think the flag has W&H on it, number on all the pieces is 53722.

Had a visitor from UK last week, she said it was worth quite a bit, I'd like to know how much quite a bit is:)

Best bet is deeleys at handsworth. they make George Butler cutlery, which is the best cutlery in sheffield. Used to sell in Harrods, made for the Queen and for 10 Downing Street. Used to have the kitemark upon it but since Arhthur Price bought out the company and moved the company name to Deeley;s its not as good but still an original made in sheffield.

There is no original factories making cutlery anymore, its dead and gone. Lazarus is a great source of info though, and Im sure he will have more ideas of where to get some cutlery.

When I went to work for David Mellor he actually thanked me for improving the quality of his cutlery by my polishing and silver finishing but the knives are a bit of an enigma, true they dont balance but thats because, when David started to make his own cutlery he had not much idea about what was what and by mistake or design he put dessert blades on table handles and tea blades on dessert handles result no balance also none of the spoon or forks are ever set to sit on the table correctly. The blades on the knives are also very poorly finished and they are full of hollows and dont look good at all.Sorry but I have been used to doing very good quality cutlery (mainly at George Butlers ) all my life and I can only type the truth.

The old designs are the best and the reason for tarnish on the silver is simply because of sulphur and other contaminents in the air, prior to the industrial revolution in England silver never tarnished because the air was clean. The kitchen range of David Mellor knives may look good but they have a tendency to flip up with the blade edge pointing up which is not very safe and the overall finish is poor and they have French blades on them again very poor forgings.
