dont u hate the rude people that seem to dominate the sheffield landscape, for instance no one ever puts their hand up and acknowledges u in your car when u have let them by, never hold doors open and most defently never let u out in traffic, what a nice place we live..... i think i will move!!!

It's really easy to miss the Sheffield drivers' thank you though- usually one finger moves about an inch. It's still a thank you.

My fella is one of the most considerate drivers & also very well mannered overall. He always lets people ut at junctions, always raises is hand in gratitude if someone lets him by. He even stops the car in the middle of flowing traffic if he sees someone (usually kids) trying to cross the road at an awkward place. Yes we know they should use the crossing but he hates to think that they will try to cross & someone else won't be as considerate.
He always opens doors for everyone, always carries our shopping bags & gives everyone a lift home who comes to our home even if he's just done a 14 hour shift at work.

I don't know about that. I always let people out and thank others if they let me out. What I find amusing is that men almost always let me out, but women almost never do. They just look straight ahead and pretend they haven't seen me. when going through a door I always check behind me and hold the door for anyone behind me.

Not really noticed a lot of bad manners in Sheffield - certainly no more than other places I've lived and less than most.

As for the acknowledging whilst driving, I'd rather some people kept both hands on the wheel, going by their driving. ;)

Seriously, though, as for letting people in to traffic, again, seen it worse elsewhere. Also, there are times and places where I don't let people in when driving because they've tried to be smart-arses and driven along a bus lane in teh morning rush hour or something similar, then assume that someone will be soft enough to let 'em in. I like to make them sweat. :)

And I alsways hold doors, stand up for pregnant women or older people on busses (or anyone who looks like they might appreciate a seat), say excuse me and thank you, etc.

i only acknowledge it if it wasn't my right o fway. if the oncoming car has to stop becausecars are parked on his side then i dont usually acknowledge them. they aren't doing me afavour just abiding by the rules of the road.
if they let me in front, or of a junction then i will nod or signal my thanks.

I'm not originally from Sheffield, having moved here 5 years ago, and the population of Sheffield is by far, the friendliest community I have ever had the pleasure to live within.

Additionally, I drive about the country quite alot and think that the driving manners around here are probably better than else where in the country

I think you seriously at risk of generalising far too much here.

I drive to work every day across the city and I am very courteous to people who let me out of junctions, and I expect the same response when I do the same for others. When I dont get a response to say thank you, its really annoying.

However, having said that, it must be no more than ten per cent of drivers who are rude and give no response, no more than that at all. So please dont tar all of us with same brush. Sheffield is a friendly place. If you drove in London, you will find that often nobody says thank you at all - and thats not a silly generalisation - its a fact!

I thought that if someone actually has their foot on a zebra crossing that drivers are obliged to stop - or am I missing something here :suspect:

I'll thank a driver who stops to let me cross when it's his/her right of way but if I'm on a zebra crossing then it's my right of way. I don't think I've ever been thanked by a driver for not putting my foot on a crossing & allowing them to carry on driving. V inconsiderate now I come to think of it!

Probably because you're supposed to stop. Mind you, there are a hell of a lot of drivers in Sheffield who don't give a damn about zebra crossings.

Most drivers are polite here - I find more people let you out of junctions than in most other places. Also people will always stop and help with directions/offer you the time if you stop and ask them. Shop assistants are good, not stuck up and like a chat. I've noticed that if you say bump into a kid or a chav they look surly for a moment (as I would ;))but as soon as you say "sorry" their faces brighten up and they're all nice with you - probably used to people being horrible to them all the time rather than polite!

The only bad thing is I notice far more miserable people in Sheffield than in most other places! :(

Both Nottingham and Manchester have a higher rate of car crime than Sheffield. Source here (www.reform.co.uk/filestore/pdf/Urban%20crime%20rankings,%20Reform,%202006.pdf). It's a pdf file, so don't click unless you want to download the pdf.

Although it is common sense to look before you cross a zebra crossing, it is also the responsibility of the car driver to watch out for people near such crossings and slow down in case anyone is about to cross the road.

If you really hate the place that much, why are you staying? You mention you may move away? So far you have not had one single good word to say about the place.

I decided to stay here after being a student here over twenty years ago. I still dont regret it. The people here are friendly and have time for you. I originally come from Leeds (sorry!), a city that is now doing and looking really well. I still wouldnt want to leave Sheff to go back there.

However, I've just finished work and feel really miserable. I work in a shop, I say hello to people when they approach me, and please and thank you, can I get you anything else and shall I pack your bag, all the normal polite things that you say....and tonight I was lucky if i got a grunt or eye contact in return...maybe the people of Sheffield have just had a bad weekend???:suspect:

Ah now - I don't think anyone's been offended Ian (unless of course it's by the idea that you thought we might take you seriously ;) )

I was born & brought up in the South East - about an hour away from London - & moved to Sheffield three and a half years ago now. I fell in love with Sheffield instantly (I had been going to move to the Nottingham area but on visiting friends in Sheffield I knew this was the place for me). On the whole I find people here more friendly and helpful and I always feels safe in the city centre - even in the early hours at a weekend.

My sister was horrified initially when I let slip I was catching the bus home at midnight. (Not something you do in Essex after dark let alone midnight). She stopped ranting at me when I explained that although I'd been on a bus full of people rather the worse for wear they'd all been pensioners & had led the bus (the driver included) in a rousing chorus of 'Kathleen I love you'.

Class! & only in Sheffield...

This is maybe deserving of a thread of its own, but in the days of the 'whistle buses', communal singing on the way home was a regular feature of a night out in town.

I have fond memories of being conducted in a performance of Jerusalem on the 60 to Broomhill, and more recently on the 76 to Woodseats participating in a call & response of The House of the Rising Sun!

i hate having to drive around sheffield. my dad got called every name under the sun the other day cus he was driving around a roundabout and a stupid rude woman thought he should actually stop his car to let her go first, he had right of way and you shouldn't stop on roundabouts anyway.

================================================== ================================================== ==========
You said that rude people 'dominate' here. So - almost everyone then.

Are you sure it's not just you that invites negative actions by walking or driving about with a face like a spanked arse?
Because I rarely encounter these rude people, but of course they are here there and everywhere.
In my experience Sheff people are amongst the most polite anywhere in the country. And, come on, the freedom of pedestrians to day dream (as many motorists do with far more serious consequences) is their right and it is up to we, 'lethal weapon' users to wach out for them and to always expect and be prepared for the unexpected. And, why should anyone ackowledge you or show any gratitude for being allowed to cross a road?
Just think, you might be just another one of the thousands of faceless people in one of the thousands of cars that they encounter every day. Do you really want them to end up with repetitive strain injury?
Tell me, when you let someone out of a side road, do you wave them out with a smile or an impatient, begrudging scowl? Lighten up - lifes too short.

P.S. Welcome to Sheff.

I lived in Hull for years and found them to be great people, especially down Hessle Road. They are tough guys and you have to approach them in the right fashion.
Like Sheffielders used to be, and still are I hope!

i think it sums hull up when i read that companies will try things out in hull because if it works there it will work ANYWHERE......

dont u hate the rude people that seem to dominate the sheffield landscape, for instance no one ever puts their hand up and acknowledges u in your car when u have let them by, never hold doors open and most defently never let u out in traffic, what a nice place we live..... i think i will move!!!see ya........

the sheffield folk are the friendliest you will find in britain,if you dont fit in or like it,then goodbye, you are the weekest link........

yes, I'm polite and hold doors open for people, today I witnessed lots of rudeness in town, firstly I was in that shoe shop near carphone warehouse looking at some shoes and a shop assistant came out of a door rightnext to me (which I thought was a mirror) and banged into me! she just carfried on wlaking past me, didn't even say sory or anything,

then i was in that pastry shop and the woman serving clearly asked me what I'd like but this other man butted in and asked for a chicken sandwich, both of them are rude!!!

sigh

I put my hand up to say thanks... and I stop to let people out of junctions.. and I hold doors open for people :)
Me too! Sheffield has plenty of courteous drivers, not all but plenty, I'd say 7 out of 10 people will thankyou, 2 are ignorant and 1 is being too careful to maneuovre without crashing.
As for doors, I try to do it when I can but I am frequently helped by people when I'm pushing my twins about in their double pram.

Awww it's so sad that some people find others are rude to them. I find the vast majority of people are polite, friendly and helpful - where-ever I am, be it in Sheffield, London, or anywhere else. But then again... I tend to smile and people smile back.... most of the time

And when people let me out at junction etc I always wave thanks. When I let people out, sure it's nice if they acknowledge it but it doesn't bother me if they don't.

i guess everyone's opinion is different, but having spoken with online, and met a few from this forum.. (which has many members from all over the City, from all backgrounds and persuasions- and so id class this forum as a valid example of Sheffield and its People as a whole) ..over the last couple of months or so... i have only come across one person (who i wont name and shame, purely cos im too replused to bring myself to type their name on my keyboard :o , no other reason) who is an example of rudeness in its most vile, bitter, poisonous form. :gag: :gag:

so in my opinion out of a community the size of Sheffield Forum, for just one rude individual to consistently rear their ugly head, and immediately spring to my mind, out of the thousands and thousands of members on the Forum surely this could be seen to represent Society in Sheffield as having an almost non-existant rudeness trait overall? :) :suspect:

I thought Northerners were better people- i am in London and want to move to sheffield or further. In London we are the masters of rudeness. here they don't ever thank you, even if you saved their life! Road rage is common and the chance of someone opening a door for you is as much as Bin laden winning personality of the year 2006

That's just how we are, sullen of temperament and grim of visage. If you don't like it, go and live in Russia.

He sounds like a mug to be honest.

There'll always be some drivers who don't give a hoot and for their own reason will not acknowledge or worse than that never give way to others.

I believe in co-operation and appreciation.

All in all, some do some don't !

Politeness is just a minefield though sometimes!!

I've learned from bitter experience that I would rather see a pregnant lady standing than a fat girl crying!

You're wrong there mate...I've lived all over from Oxford to London, Brighton to Cambridge and having been in Sheffield for 16 years I can tell you that SHEFFIELD folk are most definetly the most polite and courteous when it comes to letting some one out.

When I go 'home' down south and let someone out, they look at you 'gone out' because they're not used to it!:loopy:

At one time, the situation you mention wouldn't have happened, because it was just normal male courtesy to stand and let a woman be seated, pregnant or not.

It's a physical fact that it's better for a man to stand anyway. Sitting down doesn't agree with them, they just become out of condition and unattractive. There's something inherently wrong about a man sitting down, look at the way they have to spread their legs out in that ungainly fashion. Let them stand, say I :D

Hi, I admit I'm a long-time lurker here, and a non-sheffield resident (I live in Mansfield, Notts) , although a regular visitor to the city & I just feel that I agree with a lot of posts on this thread. Sheffield isn't full of rude people at all, I think it's one of the most friendly places I've ever visted, try working in Nottingham, or Leicester, beleive me you'll find some of the rudest people ever (even in the office I work in, some people don't even hold the door open for you...) It came to me coming home from Nottingham on the train Friday night that almost everyone would trample over you to get a seat than be polite & courtious...In my opinion the SY folks are ALOT more giving than your Midland counterparts.

I haven't read through the rest of this thread. Your initial post was enough to convince me that you have posted in the wrong forum, in the wrong city. Sheffield is brimming with friendly, helpful and sociable people. I spend a lot of my time working away from home these days and every week i look forward to getting back to my nice, friendly, home. Hi there from down under in Oz . It is not just Sheffield it is everywhere. I work in Tourism here in Perth, Western Australia and you would be surprised how many times when you have gone out of your way to help a worried or inquisitive tourist ( or local) that they just walk away without as much as a smile a thank you or a wave . Just down right RUDE RUDE RUDE. There is just no respect being taught nowadays ,,,,what a shame . Most people only care about themselves, the downfall of society it is the downfall of society !!!!!
