Can anybody remember the Fighting Cock on Monteney Crescent, Parson Cross being built.

What year do we think it was?

I think it was 1962/3. It was at the time The Sportsman Inn on High Street, Ecclesfield closed. At the time the story was that the license was transferred from The Sportsman to the Fighting Cock. Hope this helps.

Sounds about right Nigel, I used to drink in there around 1968 Mansfield Ales pub as I remember
had a mate lived near there - Barry Butler

Sorry, but I don't know him, but I bet I often saw him as I used to go in the Fighting Cock regularly.

what about the Fighting cock football team. Formed around 1970 I'd guess
Dom Wragg, Brian Marsden, Jack Palmer, Charlie Dale Alan Brammah. remember Sam Heywood had something to do with running the team.
Was it Derek who was landlord in those days?

I remember Barry Butlers name, where did he live?

When I was going out with my girlfriend who lived on "Rokeby Drive" we used to go to the "Fighting Cock" at least twice a week, this was about 1964....I remember a "Trio".. Some Bloke on Drums, Old Guy on piano, and a young lad on Bass Guitar, who played there...I can't remember what the Beer was but it must have been ok co's I never complained.

Wasn't Derek Wilson the landlord around 1969?

Guy who had it before us was Keith Hoyland, so late 70s to early 80s, not sure prior to that as at 10 year old I was more interested in the latest Donkey Kong and drinking copious amounts of fizzy pop!

You must be Terry's son then. I use to play for the pool team, we had pretty useful side then.

Yes, I remember all the pub teams winning all sorts of awards and trophies - the cabinets in the tap room used to be rammed full with silverware! I also remember my dad getting me out of bed so I could meet Roger Wylde and Mel Sterland I think it was, who presented the trophies to the football team - think I just said 'Who are you?' :)

Had a good time living there but I think the long hours and decline in pub-trade (First £1 pint as I recall) nearly killed my parents!

I had my 18th birthday party there, and used to go in with OH when I was pregnant a couple of times (I only drank J20 and Cola though. Not together) I still call it the fighting cock even though it's now called Malthouse.

If I remember rightly, I had my 16th:wink: 17th :heyhey:18th :bigsmile:19th & 20ieth at the Cock. Didn't go out on my 21st cus I did my back in.

They had quite a comfy carpark as well, many time I couldn't be arsed to walk up the road so rolled up my coat and bedded myself down for the night.

Aaaaaaaaaah!!!!!!!!! The glorious memorys of a misspent youth.:hihi:

I first went into "The Cock" in 1962, and the Original Land;lord was still there. His name was "Steve".
