I am surprised no one has posted anything nasty about Sheffield on crap towns.com web site.....there seem to be number of fairly nice places that have been subject to a hate posting.....I know a few of the small towns on there and they are quite lovely,. not the scum infested hives made out to be at all on the web site....

Perhaps the reason why no-one's posted anything nasty is because Sheffield isn't a crap town?

Like you I know a couple of the places on the site and I guess that so much of what's posted is very subjective. I suppose what we really need is a 'crappiness index' with a suitable 'crappiness survey' - you know,

'How many times was your car broken into last year?'
a. Never
b. Once
c. What's a car?
d. Which car? The first three were all stolen....

I grew up in a small town in Nottinghamshire and it was fine until I actually wanted to go to University, visit a decent museum / art gallery / theatre / cinema, buy something that was slightly unusual, find a job, etc.

I wouldn't say that I hate Warsop, nowadays, but as soon as my family ties there were severed I had no desire to revisit in a hurry!

I guess those reasons listed above might be viewed as indicating I think Warsop a crap town - it's not, just what you might expect of a small town in Nottinghamshire. IMHO.

This may be a generalisation but don't you often find that the people native to a place don't like it as much as the people who are incomers. I know there will be a storm of protest from people born and bred in Sheffield but I think it's to do with needing a change from the place you grew up in. I was born in Cheshire and lived there for 32 years but have lived in Sheffield area for 11 years. I love it here and wouldn't like to go back "home".
So the "crap town" you was was brought up in is not the same to someone who has chosen to live in the same town.

I didn't have problems with Warsop until I went to Univesrity in Manchester. When I came home for the summer holidays after my first year I just felt adrift...

Friends who'd stayed on in town were still the same, and I still got on with them, but our expectations were now different. That's what I meant by subjective - One person's crap is another person's quiet, another person's crap is someone else's lively, etc.

I wouldn't say that natives don't like it as much as incomers...I think the natives just take all the things that make Sheffield special for granted.

I didn't fully appreciate what a gem Sheffield was until I returned four years ago (after an absence of a decade).

Edit - That website has not been updated for YEARS. I'm still waiting for my comments on Widnes and St Helens to be posted up there. Perhaps some people have criticised Sheffield since then...I'd like to see their comments...

I had an 8 year absence from Sheffield and absolutely love it now. Don't want to be anywhere else. Although I'm native, like previous posters have suggested, having a break reduces the need for change so I still love the place.
