View Full Version : Help Needed: Donor Clinic: 12/08/06 Sheffield
Me and my missus are helping to organise a Donor Clinic for the Anthony Nolan Trust in aid of my 18 year old nephew who is suffering from Leukaemia and urgently requires a bone marrow transplant.
It's being held at the Sheffield United ground on Brammal Lane (John St Entrance) on 12TH August 2006 from 12 Noon till 4PM You will need to donate a 4Ml of blood and if chosen as a match, the donor has the choice of donating blood cells either from the blood stream, or from the bone marrow.
You need to be aged 18-40 and weigh over 8 stone, particularly young donors, males and donors from ethnic backgrounds). This is a drive not just for my nephew but to help boost donors on the national register.
Please come along and help by spreading word of this event to anyone you think may be interested in donating :D
MORE INFO: pm me or visit the Anthony Nolan trust site
dynamicdebz 05-08-2006, 20:55 I would love to give bllod but presume I'm not able due to health conditions.
please feel free to come along and talk to one of the advisors that will be around to answer any questions
I think everyone should go along to this, I am already on the register and so is my hubby. x
Sorry i would but i am to old other side of 50
This is a really good cause, I hope you get a good response.
I'm curious though, why the upper age limit?
not sure on the age limit. Just My info just states donors need to be 18 - 40, in good health & weigh over 8 stone. I guess thats what works for them
you can visit www.anthonynolan.org.uk for more info
boost for the weekend. THIS SATURDAY!!!!!!!
The upper age limit is 40 to join but many people can stay on the register 'til they're 60.
I'm looking into this and trying to register - any more clinics coming up in the next few weeks for the Sheffield area?
gonzesse 19-03-2007, 20:56 This is a brilliant cause. I'm already on the register, but I would encourage anyone who isn't to do it. You could save a life.
Lady_Cat 19-03-2007, 21:06 Would love to help as i am only 19 so am the age you looking for but as i have had cancer twice and loads of chemo and a stem cell transplant i am unable to give blood!
I wish you all the best for your nephew and hope lots of people are willing to help. x
EDIT: Apologies, didn't realise the date!
Hope you found a match x

you can go on the bone marrow register by donating blood - there was a session at the university today, and there's another tomorrow, and there's always the blood donor centre in town - just tell them when you give blood that you want to go on the bone marrow donor register.
chances are that if you don't come up as a match within the first 3 months you probably won't at all. if you do come up as a match you could well be saving someone's life - yes, it probably isn't pleasant donating the bone marrow (it's under general anaesthetic, but aches for a few days), and you'll be off work for a few days if you do, but that's a small sacrifice to make for someone's life and the lives of their loved ones.
i think everyone should be on the bone marrow register, even if they don't give blood. go on, people, sign up...
well I printed a form off the website and have filled it in so it just needs posting. Apparently they will send out a blood testing kit that you take to your GP and it tells you about 50 times not to attempt to take blood yourself. Why would you want to??
I didn't know that about if you're not called up in the first three months, you prob never wil be. I doubt I will be - I am a very common person with white skin, mousey hair and blood group o so sure there are already thousands like me but worth a try.
Why won't you be a match? Is it that we're all so alike? That's a bit sad. I wanted to volunteer but pretty ordinary too... sigh! Darn genes. And marrow.

BUT BUT BUT just because you see yourself as a 'normal' group doesn't mean you won't match anyone on the register! i forget how many things have to match (it isn't particularly straightforward) to qualify as a 'good' match, but it's quite a few. also, there's a lot of 'normal' people about, and hence a lot of 'normal' people on the register, already waiting for donors. you could be a perfect match for one of them!
as for the 3 month thing, it was what i was told when i registered. i guess it's because when you join, there's already a big long list of people waiting for a match, and after it has taken a few months to type your blood type and check it against those who need marrow, if you don't match any on there then you might well not be needed. people are always being added to the waiting list, so you might eventually be needed, but when you join is the most likely time to find a match.
please go and join!
well, weirdly... I send off for a marrow donation leaflet from the blood people and it came today. I have to wait a bit longer as I was in Asia in December. Definitely will be going back to give more blood and sign up in June.
