View Full Version : Hello, I'm new here
Hi All, I'm new here.
I'm not actually in Sheffield, but my friend Jules sent me the link, and I saw the forum in Simply knitting. You all seem really friendly, so I hope I'm welcome?
My name's Becky, I live in Southsea, on the south Coast of England. I'm married, mum of 3, and I've been knitting around 2 and a half years I think.
I started when I was expecting my 3rd baby, although my mum taught me when I was little, I hadn't touched it until then.
Anyway, thats me really! Hope to chat with you all soon.:)
Jabberwocky 05-08-2006, 13:00 Hello.
Could you knit a whelk for me? Im in dire need of a new whelk since my cat ate my old one.
He was my only friend.
Welcome to the forum, and if you need any knitting advice, please dont hesitate to ask me.
Even Hecate acknowledges that Im the best.
Hi Becky, welcome to the Knitting Group and to Sheffield Forum! . Of course you're welcome to join, even though you're not in Sheffield. Neither am I, actually, though I am an ex-pat now in Leicestershire. Did I mention the written test you'll have to sit though on Sheffield and its history? Don't worry; it's only a three hour exam with four essay-style questions... ;) .
Don't mind Jabbers; he's completely barking, but fortunately harmless. He's also a pathological liar who's yet to grasp the fundamentals of casting-on, despite my best efforts  :D . He's lovely really, but don't tell him I said so...
Are you working on anything at the moment? You might have noticed that we have a Clapotis knitalong on the go at the minute, which you're more than welcome to join in with. We've got quite a few enthusiastic sock-knitters too, plus some others who are just starting to take up the DPNs or the Magic Loop.
If you have access to a camera, it'd be great if you could post some photos of WIPs, completed projects and the like. There's a 'sticky' thread at the top of the group page about how to go about doing this. You'll need to have made 15 posts though before you can post links.
There's also a 'sticky' thread containing useful links to various knitting web sites; blogs, shops, yarn companies etc. Feel free to suggest any web sites you think should be added to any of the categories.
Happy knitting :) .
Liz/Hecate.

Jabbers, if you continue to talk about whelks in my knitting group, I shall banish you. Also, where's the cast-on stitches you promised me about a month ago? :suspect:
Thank you for the lovely welcome.
I've got Blueberry bear on the needles at the moment (popcorn and friends). its actually really simple to knit, just a lot of shaping. its the making up part I'm not looking forward to.
I am hoping to buy my silk for the Clapotis in the next couple of weeks (dont tell hubby! LOL), so I dont think I'll be finished at the end of august but I can try.
I'm also knitting a couple of cardi's for my eldest top wear to school. I must get on witht hat actually cos its been OTN for months now!
I'll post pics when I have something slightly resembling a bear!:hihi:

I SWEAR that I tried again!
I even got my nasty hands on some smaller, metallic needles to try to see if that worked out.
No matter what I did, no matter what I tried though the damn wool slipped and slid around, my fingers seemed to swell up like sausages and lost all sense of feeling.
Once again I lost my patience and ...tutted.
Im going to wait until im in the mood and im going to try again, its not goign to beat me, but I DO tend to go into deep and meaningless sulks at times like this.
As for whelks, theyre an integral part of knitting. where do you think the wool comes from??
Ok dont ban me, I`ll be good. :D

Excellent! Are you going for the Lorna's Laces Lion and Lamb or a substitute yarn? I'm soooo tempted to buy more for another Clapotis; it's absolutely gorgeous stuff. I was drooling over the Black Purl colourway only last night.
Just a quick note, in case you haven't seen it in the Clapotis knitalong thread: If you go for the LL Lion and Lamb, you may need four skeins and not the suggested three, in order to knit the full-sized Clapotis as specified in the pattern. There's more details about this in the Clapotis thread.
Don't worry about finishing by the end of the month. I doubt I will actually. It's more of a general aim than a rule :) .

LOL I've been known to post photos of an inch or two of knitting. It's knitting progress, so I reckon it's worth a photo or two. Besides, I've been knitting so blumin' slowly of late that the odd inch or two of fabric is all I've been managing :hihi: . It's just been far to hot to knit. Thank God it's cooled down a little.
Keep at it, Jabbers. You can knit me a couple of rows as a Christmas present; though at this rate it'll be Christmas 2008...

Final warning, sweetie... ;) .
Ello you!! I wish you did live up here rather than right down there!
We'll soon have you knitting those socks and as long as you don't tell Simon i'm encouraging you, we won't tell him what you're buying!
Hiya bex!
I debated over knitting that bear a few months ago but decided against it as, like you, I hate hate hate making up. I have a Tigger that was one of the very first projects I knitted a couple of years ago that is still unfinished as I can't face the sewing.
Nice to have you here!

I'm not sure yet which one to go for, I've got some nice links saved in me bookmarks, I'll decide which one to go for when I actually buy it. Although I've seen some lovely shades.
I'm quite taken with several shades I've seen.
Jules, its miserable here!and the way house prices are at the moment, Theres every chance we may move up north!
We were talking about it a few months ago, and even when I've finally done my degree I dont think we'll have enough for a mortgage down here.
Prices are high here too. I paid £25,000 for mine 5 years ago, they are going for about 70 now. A decent 3 bedroom house will cost you about £150,000 which is why we're still in a tardis like 2 bedroom (i say tardis cos everytime we go out, more stuff goes in when we come back but none comes out!)
Thats still about £50,000 cheaper than down here!
