kittykat 14-06-2003, 22:26 Red Hot Chilli Peppers newest album. Its been in my car CD player for months now and i never tire of it. Whats the new Radiohead album like? I got Kid A and wasnt really keen on most of the songs (after track 5 it went downhill) Ive heard their new one is a bit rockier. Is it worth buying? (or downloading off the net - tee hee)
if you wasn't keen on Kid A lol then don't get the new cd :D i love it thou
id say the opposite if you hated kid-a you'll love HttT but if you love Kid-A you'll love HttT :D
i love Kid A what if you like both cds RPG
i already said didnt i :?
kittykat 15-06-2003, 00:44 Ok lets judge it differently. I love their current single there there. Are the rest of the songs on the CD more 'there there' or more 'motion picture sountrack'

Phanerothyme 15-06-2003, 21:44 Just bought two new CDs
Michelle Shocked - Deep Natural / Dub Natural
The Flaming Lips - Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots
Both of which I have to say are excellent.
The Michelle Shocked is quite a departure from Arkansas Traveller and Kind Hearted woman, not to mention the others, but is a very chilled piece of reggae/americana/country/rock. Really amazingly varied and complex sound.
The Flaming Lips one is very unique in its sound, and is definitely a grower.
I used to have Michelle Shocked camp fire tapes cd
baublebag 15-06-2003, 23:48 Short Sharp Shocked is an old fave of mine, I didn't know she had new stuff, thanks.
I am playing the new Blur album a lot at the moment, it's wonderfully melancholy.
I could not say what music I have been listening to, but the idiot who lives in the house at the bottom of my garden can, it is the most annoying, stupid, mind blowing drivel, I have ever had the misfortune to hear.
And do not forget that I am a captive audience, being forced to listen to this claptrap when trying to enjoy some peace and tranquility sat in my own garden in the sunshine, this rubbish should be stopped and these nincompoops made to play this bilge in their own homes with the doors and windows shut.
Peacelover. Sheffield.
PaulTansley 16-06-2003, 19:06 Just curios Hal, what if your neighbour played your favourite music, would you still feel the same.
Hi CLR. That is the trouble, he never does, I have no objection to him playing his music but why doesn't he keep it to himself instead of ramming it down my throat, and playing it at 5000 decibels with his window wide open.
These idiots seem to think it is alright to anoy others with their rubbish and when I went to his door and asked him politely to turn the volume down a bit, he said alright and when I got back to my garden, he turned IT UP instead, this is sheer bloody mindedness!!!
so whats your type of music hal?
im guessing: a bit of big band jazz and erm some 60's music? (beatles etc.)
Hi rpg, Middle of the road, 60s, 70s, big band, beatles, presley, very varied a bit of classical a bit of most types of music really.
i was close then :D
at the moment im into the pop side of rock (radiohead, white stripesm pulp etc.) and 70's and 80's (such as Pink Floyd, Mike Oldfield, Dire Straights, and electronica like gary numan) as well as the bands in my sig ;)
so again, very varied
i cant stand "heavy/death metal" or dancey music tho
Just wait till the next Gary Numan CD he's gone heavy metal should be fun
Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
i hope he hasnt sold out to the new hype :(
I'm currently really into Trance music.
One artist I'm listening to alot at the moment is DJ Sammy.
............BECK........he's fantastic............AIR...brilliant!
Phanerothyme 17-06-2003, 23:11 I think moon safari will become a classic in years ahead, it is very listenable indeed.
I'm yet another Air fan, plus Beck. Sea Change is one of my favourite albums and Air did a great job on Virgin suicides.
Bought The Thrills cd single today can't wait for the album to come out :)

just wondering what everyones musical tastes are..well being 40 years young i grew up in the 70's but really started to get into music around the time of the mods i.e the jam, secret affair stuff like that, but these days i love the type of music played in some of sheffield clubs speed garage (niche) funky house/vocal house (zero)..well i have got an 18 year old daughter..lol...so what gets your foot taping then?
Jack Yerbody 25-11-2003, 06:49 House music all night long. Going to my first sheffield club night in a couple of weeks, Sandy Rivera is playing at bed - bound to be a bobby-dazzler of a night.
What's bed like, btw?
my mate dj's at bed (dj watty) its a good night with a good friendly atomphere......when he's playing i usually get comps but don't always use them..will pass them on to you if you like in there....you should also give gate crasher at the republic a whirl once a month its on and my mate also dj's there too....
Jack Yerbody 25-11-2003, 07:01 Is that Craig Watt? Tall, black, shaved head? Think I met him in Sola one night when trying to seduce a few sheffield ladies!!
Comps would be mint - the industry I'm in (law) doesn't have great contacts or a huge social cachet, so I'm unlikely to blag any, more's the pity.
yes mate it is craig watt........next time you see him tell him you've been talking to kirky, ive known him since he was about 5 years old..i work with his brother derek.........i dj in the bar 101 arrundel gate..next to the old roxy night club...
Moved here as more suitable.
Agent Dan 25-11-2003, 08:05 Difficult to categorise music tastes as there's ususally one or two tracks in a genre that are good anyway... but mainly drum'n'bass, hiphop, breakbeat, heavy metal, indie and trippy/deep house...
Going to see Andy C in Derby in 2 weeks - should be a drum'n'bass extravaganza!!:D  :D

The Mahavishnu Orchestra
J.G Thirlwell in all his incarnations (Scraping Foetus off the Wheel, Wiseblood, Steroid Maximus etc)
also if you've not listened to Plunderphonics (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B00005AVLZ/qid=1069770310/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_1/102-5783023-8394534?v=glance&s=music) then I urge you all to sample (pun intended) this amazing feast of plundered phonics.

scatterheart 10-02-2004, 23:23 So then what sort of music is everyone into?
I'm a mega bjork fan, I also like tori amos, lamb, goldfrapp, radiohead....
Anybody similar? :P
Funky Dave 10-02-2004, 23:25 Have you ever seen any of that lot live at all?
scatterheart 10-02-2004, 23:26 I've seen bjork three times, tori amos once, and goldfrapp once, when they came to the Union last year.
You? :)
Funky Dave 10-02-2004, 23:31 I'm a fan of live music, but probably not the sort that you'd be into.
Out of curiosity, what is it that appeals to you about Bjork/Tori Amos etc? They are quite offbeat artists, and though I'm not really a fan I must admit that I have a lot of respect for their individuality. It seems to be a rare trait in modern music.
scatterheart 10-02-2004, 23:35 That's just it, they're something different.
I think they are so unbelievably talented. Bjork has the most amazing voice I have ever heard, it's so powerful, can show so much emotion, and has such a range. And she sounds even better live! She puts everything into her music, she's always one step ahead, and she's not afraid to be different. I honestly can not understand why everyone is not a fan :P
As for Tori, she is also incredibly talented, especially at the piano. She has songs that could fit into any genre, and she's just such a lovely lovely person. Her voice is just special.
I can't really explain it that well I guess hehe :D
I tend to go in cycles and switch every few months between indie and metal.
At the moment I'm listening to Judas Priest and Jet (I know!!!).
Couldn't really pick any particular band or style as I listen to anything as long as its honest. Including Bjork. I've got Post and Debut and they're great to listen to for a change. Don't think I could survive on them solely though.
Favourite bands I suppose would be...
Oasis
Beatles
Led Zeppelin
Blur
Manic Street Preachers
Queens of the Stone Age
Radiohead
Bob Marley
Black Sabbath
System of a Down
So what's Tori Amos like then?
Don't think I've ever heard anything of her apart from "Cornflake Girl".
Funky Dave 10-02-2004, 23:59 I'm a fan of rock music, but I'm starting to mellow in my old age. I used to buy CD's all the time, but last year I think I only bought 4. Having said that, I got the album "Love" by The Cult, and I thought that was amazing. I'd put it on now actually, if it wasn't 1.00 in the morning...
scatterheart 11-02-2004, 00:02 Oooh you need to check out Homogenic if you like bjork! Her best album in my opinion ;)
Tori Amos is a bit of everything to be honest :P She always uses piano in her songs, but she has some really relaxing laid-back music then some mad beat stuff. I'd recommend listening to some of her music, but try a bit from each album if you can, so you get a good mix ;)
Anybody heard any of Lamb's music? Their album What Sound is fantastic, and the new one Between Darkness and Wonder is amazing too :)

My Morning Jacket - It Still Moves
Snow Patrol - Final Straw
Mew - Frengers
Air - Talkie Walkie
on, as well as my 700 track playlist going on Random (see sig, what am i listening to..)
Phanerothyme 14-02-2004, 14:33 So far lots of Camper Van Beethoven and FZ
You may attempt to actually listen to what I am now listening to via my sig. (if I am listening to anything).
scatterheart 14-02-2004, 15:12 How does that work then? Does it actually play it from your computer?
At this moment in time I've got Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds album on.
Top class! Eve of the War is one of the scariest tunes ever!
Phanerothyme 14-02-2004, 15:21 I'm running a little test.
I play the music on my computer and stream it to a 'Shoutcast Server'.
For this to work I must pay for a shoutcast server stream.
The stream I am renting is for up to 30 concurrent listeners at 64kbps (half standard mp3 quality).
I chose screaminghost.com as a shoutcast server because they offered instant set up, but their web site is a bit of a bag of spanners, so I would go elsewhere in future.
A shoutcast server basically takes your upload and makes the bandwidth available for the numbe of listeners plugged into your feed. It creates a file at this URL http://fizz.screaminghost.com:8022/listen.pls - which is a playlist file that Winamp and most players understand. For the link to work, your player must be registered as a helper application for your browser.
To stream the sounds to a shoutcast server, you need a player that will do so.
QCD and winamp do, they use plugins, Windows media player does not AFAIK. If you have winamp 5 go to the plugins page and search for shoutcast.
I am using SAM 2.7.9 from spacialaudio.com to stream the music, as I am trying to learn its playlist automation language (which is quite a lot better than just "Shuffle")
SAM 2.7.9 Lacks some basic features like being able to preview one track whilst broadcasting another.
Snow Patrol - Final straw and Franz Ferdinand. Rather good too...

Good gravy has there ever been a more underrated band than Elbow! They never get played on the radio, even on stations like Virgin that cater for all of their contemporaries. Go and buy this album now everybody! Fugitive Motel is sooo nice. Ooh and I saw them live last year too!
PS - if you've been on rathergood.com (which you probably have) they do the yorkshire kittens Destiny's Child spoof, but it isn't at all in the style of anything else they've done afaik.

Hi, I'm BJ Smith, tied in for the Vice City Mambas and proud proprieter of BJ's Used Autos.
Cars from all over America come to find a new home in Florida, just like you.
I moved here after the draft, football not Vietnam, even though they do have a lot in common. I noticed there was one thing missing from this great town, a celebrity endorsed used car shop.
That's why I founded BJ's Used Autos. Everyone of these beauties has been freshly painted, they look brand new. We have new models coming in every morning, usually around 2 am.
WE CAN GET YOU ANYTHING, and if you see the car of your dreams, tell us, we can aquire it for ya!
I've taken the skills I've learned as a pro football player to the used car business: smash grab and run like hell.
BJ's Used Autos, I'm tackling low prices with hot cars.

ToryCynic 13-07-2004, 01:37 For the past hour, hour and a half I have been sorting out my music on the hard drive - parts of files all over the show- duplicates etc. Now, they are all in the same folder and proper file names given to them, as some (older/copied cds) when shoved through CDEx [CDA-MP3 @ 192Kbps] just automatically get given "Track 1 - No Artist". That's all sorted.
Whilst doing that my "work-in-progress" playlist is what I have been listening to - which consists of Sleeper, Peaches, Von Bondies, The White Stripes, Tracy Chapman, The Thrills, Radiohead, Alanis Morisette, Queen, Jack Johnson - the list is endless. Then I accidently hit the "Clear playlist" button - and had to recrate it !!!! Nash, nash!!

Yes, "The Program" was their second album. I rate it higher than the first, in fact it's one of my very favourites. Always makes me feel incredibly emotional, like no other album, except perhaps for the Only Ones.
Like I said, it was criminally underrated, almost ignored, by the music press at the time, and I'm sure that lack of response contributed to Marion breaking up not long after it was released. Sounds like they had all sorts of difficulties at the time - like the record company not supporting them, an attempt to break America put on hold, etc.
Jaime did have a smack habit, but the last I heard he was clean. (That was at the beginning of this year). And I heard that at New Year he joined Phil Cunningham's band Label onstage in Macclesfield , and sang a couple of Marion songs.
It would be wonderful if he was writing and performing again, but obviously only if he's happy doing that. Fingers crossed for him.
I recommend listening to "The Program" if you can - if you love music, you won't be disappointed.
Cheers,
StarSparkle

THe link only really works if you have a helper app for your browser that knows an mp3 stream when it sees one.
winamp is to be recommended. free, no adware (www.winamp.com) and plays more or less everything.
but to use realplayer (if you must :P)
open realplayer from your start menu
press ctrl+O to open a file
type the following into the dialogue box
http://tori.screaminghost.com:8010/listen.pls
and press return
and now press Ctrl+G to bookmark the radio station

You're listening to them all at the same time? What does that sound like? Anything like that Flaming Lips album?
LordSnooty 13-06-2005, 21:45 I mean I have them on random play on my PC! I have not heard the Flaming Lips - are they good?
DanSumption 13-06-2005, 21:48 I was being sarcastic.
Yes, Flaming Lips are good. I believe they released one LP on about 3 or 4 CDs, you had to listen to them all at the same time to hear the album properly.
LordSnooty 13-06-2005, 21:50 Yes - it's the highest form of wit, apparently. I'm always happy to take a tip re. music. Most of my best 'discoveries' have come from buying in blind faith. Do you dig the Ink Spots, Dan? I know I do.....
