View Full Version : Which supermarket do you use?
I cannot say i use one particular supermarket at all. Co-op is nearest. Somerfield has the launderette next door so i can dry clothes in the winter and shop at the same time. Safeway and Morrisons have good recycling facilites. Do people use a particular one for a particular reason?
How can you leave out the 3rd largest, Sainsbury's?
Oh, and Safeway *IS* Morrisons.
ToryCynic 29-06-2004, 16:58 Morrisons in Erith. Asda, Bexleyheath.
Alex
I knew i had forgotten one of them, get the mods to add it.
And it is but it isn't, the one on Infirmary Rd still says Safeway above the door.
Does anyone think they have changed since being taken over? Apart from the odd thing labelled Morrisons appearing. Has quality changed?
Even though shop fronts may still say Safeway, they are now Morrisons.
mr craig 29-06-2004, 17:05 Tesco, reason being is that i live above it, lol.
I would say that ASDA just off the parkway is probably the best supermarket in sheffield.

I didn't say it hadn't been taken over? They are selling old stock labelled Safeway and some Morissons stuff, and the name over the door still says Safeway.
Why do you have to have a go at everything i attempt to post?

Ignore him, I do. It's not just you it's most people he has a go at.

We do our main shopping at Morrisons, but go to Safeway for a few things most weeks. There have been quite a lot of price cuts at Safeway since the takeover, bringing them down to Morrisons prices.

I wasn't "having a go" at all. I said that Safeway is now Morrisons, to which fuzzy said, and I quote: "it is and it isn't". This is incorrect - I'm not having a go by pointing out that something she said is wrong. I'm merely making the point that Safeway is now Morrisons, regardless of whether or not they have changed the shop fronts.
mr craig 29-06-2004, 18:03 3 posts already on this tread and you still haven't answered the original question, no wonder you've 2xxx posts.
give it a rest.
Oh right - all my doing again then, I see.
qazitory 29-06-2004, 19:16 You still havent answered lol
I go to Morrisons for my petrol and Asda for my shopping
Sainsbury's, but I answered already using the poll.
I shop at Sainsburys because it has the best food
We use a combination of 3 main shops for our shopping, Morrissons, Co-Op and Netto...
We shop at Netto cos it's cheap, and convenient, and you don't have to spend a certain amount to get a ticket to get out of the car park like you do at the Middlewood Road Co-Op.
*Twinkle* 29-06-2004, 19:55 My family go to Asda and Morrisons :) I do my boyfriend's shopping at Tesco's... :)
We use more than one, it's either Morrisons or Asda. depends if we have the car or not.
I use tesco, but i use local greengrocer for veg and local butcher for meat. I want to help keep our local town center. We have such a good selection of shops in Alfreton, that most people use the shops in the town centre 'cos we don't want it to be killed off by a huge supermarket.
I use whatever's most convienient. At the moment, it's the Co-op which is extortionate because it's the only shop in the village.
When I was in Sheffield it was a combination of Safeway, Sainsbury's Central, Netto and occasionally Tescos.
what about marks and spencers
Girlfriend :D ;)
Or Tesco online if we cant be fussed with going.
Or both go for a jaunt around Tesco and chuck in what we want, and I use each lane like the M1 :D
(I could grow up but I am tall enough as it is.... :D )

Agent Orange 30-06-2004, 07:54 I usually shop at Tesco or Morrisons, depending what sort of groceries I want usually determines which one I go to.

But the one at the bottom of Ecclesall Rd is still a Morrisons until Morrisons sell it off to Waitrose, which is a forced sale by the way.
When is safeway/Morrison's changing over anyway?
Again, i shop at tescos for basics, because i live on the roof. Use local greengrocers and butcher for other stuff because their produce is nicer.
Morrisons have already taken over Safeway, but of course they can't just do it in one day there is a lot of stock to get rid of and think how many plastic carriers etc they would have had on order it's all got to go before they can complete the makeover, but at least the prices have come down a long way.
Sorry I meant when is it changing over to waitrose. Didn't make that very clear really.
I do actually like Morrisons but they don't do online shopping.
We use Asda, but do it online. So much easier when neither of own or drive a car. We get the odd bit of stuff from Sainsburys (I work 5 minutes away from one), Somerfield (Live 5 minutes from one) and M&S occaisionally, if were in town and need something.
Safeway is beginning to change over to Morrisons, they do have some of there stock in with Morrisons branding on it already.
Does anyone else think there fresh produce is not as fresh anymore? I was wondering if they are brining the older stuff from the Morrisons in to use it up?
For the 20th time...... Safeway isn't "beginning to change" to Morrisons, it has *CHANGED* to Morrisons. It *IS* Morrisons. Not all of the packaging, signs, etc have yet been updated, but the stores have CHANGED ownership and are now Morrisons.
Can i think of where i would like to shove the sign when they take it down????

Safeway hasn't changed to Morrisons yet. The shop is still called Safeway, because it still is Safeway. I'm not even sure if there are any plans to rename the stores.

The shops are OWNED by Morrisons, regardless of whether the signs have changed or even if they are going to change at all.
Yodameister 02-07-2004, 09:00 T020 how good are you at making arguments? it is a real talent you have - maybe you could run evening classes.
On the subject.
I find there is very little to choose between Sainsbury, Tesco, Asda, Safeway (as was). Tend to be relatively expensive but quality products.
Reckon Morrisons is pretty good for value and selection.
Somerfield is bad for both selection and value for money.
Co Ops tend to be okay for most things.
For tins, rice, pasta, cereal, that sort of stuff I go to Netto ocs its very cheap and you cant really go wrong with those sort of products. I wouldn't go there for any meat or fresh vegetables though
It doesn't matter who it's owned by. Asda is owned by Wal-mart, but you don't say "I'm just popping down wal-mart to get my groceries" do you?
No you say "Asda-walmart". Walmart still want to trade under the name Asda in the UK, so it is a different situation anyway.
So Morrisons must want to still trade as Safeway's then or they would have renamed them all already.
Anyway i didn't put this on to have you (T020) go on and on and on about who owns which supermarket, but to find out the way people use them. And your mummy does your shopping so i don't know why you bothered even looking at it.

Don't tell me who does my shopping, you don't know me. Also, AFAIK, Morrisons will be changing all livery on Safeway stores but the Ecclesall Rd Safeway is to be sold off to Waitrose, so needless to say there is no point in spending thousands on renaming it Morrisons for a few weeks.

I shop at Asda or Netto depending how close to pay day it is!
Mosherchik 04-07-2004, 11:17 Sainsburys online because we get so much food, yet still my dad manages to complain that there's nothing to eat when a freezer full of food indicates otherwise

"so what if I don't do the shopping" - is that not what you say here????
So why did you bother replying and going off thread. Again
And for your extra information, I use the SAFEWAY on Infirmary Road.
a) I don't use chat anymore
b) My circumstances may or may not have changed since that old post you've dragged up, so don't tell me how I live my life
c) Oh right - the MORRISONS on Infirmary Road
a) i know you don't, and it is so nice. Though you did pop in and lurk the other night.
b) so have they? or is this just another pointless post to boost your numbers. Try actually answering the thread
c) this is just not really worth it
a) Might just have to use it again then
b) My circumstances are not your concern, and I answered the thread several pages ago (try reading in future)
c) Acceptance of being in the wrong, thats fine
a) I don't mind if u do because i just put you on ignore like i used to.
b) i don't give a crap about your circumstances
c) i didn't say i was wrong, i meant i could not be arsed to go around in circles with you anymore. I will not reply to anymore of your posts on this thread as it is completely pointless and you are just using it as a post booster AGAIN.
a) I'm flattered you'd go to so much effort
b) Then don't ask whether or not they've changed
c) Safeway is now Morrisons, and I couldn't give a damn about post counts

So if I go to the Bank of Scotland, am I actually going to the Halifax? If I go to The Link to buy a new phone, am I actually going to PC World? If I'm sending a letter to NatWest, should I address it to Royal Bank of Scotland? :shakes:
t020, if you had to direct someone to the Classic Rock Bar, for example, and you said it was opposite Morrisons, they'd probably end up in Hillsborough and lost :P
Safeway is very much still in existance according to the website (http://www.safeway.co.uk/). t020, why can't you just admit that you are WRONG?
To get back to the question,i tend to shop at the closest and cheapest. It used to be Tesco but i now shop at Sainsburys,it does good food at reasonable prices. We have a Waitrose near us, although it is fantastic quality it leads to an expensive shop so i can't afford to shop there.I think everyone should calm down about the status of Safeway and Morrisons, does it really matter.

Yes, it's very important!
I normally shop at Sainsburys but if I need to pick things up I go to Somerfield in town at lunchtime. It's a shame the Tesco and Sainsburys in town aren't very central - I think their quality is better than Somerfields. Sainsburys on the Moor is, I feel, in a poor location.
By the way t020, if I shopped at Kwik-Save, should I vote for Somerfield?
According to Waitrose's site the Safeway stores are being acquired by Waitrose but until such time as they are converted they will be operated by Morrisons.
Waitrose press release (http://www.waitrose.com/about/press_resources/pr_news_releases/164.asp)
It doesn't look as though they will ever be owned by Morrisons.
The planned acquisition date, according to one of the employees, is mid-September and the store will close for a week prior to this for re-branding.
As to which supermarket I use? It's a shop not a leisure centre and so long as they don't play piped music I don't really care what it says over the door.
Sidla - all that link does is prove that Safeway IS Morrisons - just look at the top - "Morrisons Retailer of the year 2004". I don't see why I should accept I am wrong when Safeway is quite clearly being run by Morrisons.
Max - AFAIK Waitrose are only buying some of the Safeway stores, 18 according to that link. The remaining Safeway stores will stay as Morrisons. How long it will take them to fully change all the livery I'm not sure, but they're still Morrisons.
They arent going to change the livery of the stores for some time if ever. If they do go ahead with it, it'll be a ASDA style changover where for a period they'll be called "Safeway-Morrisons"
However Morrisons have replaced Safeway's trademark "offers" with consistant low prices storewide and in some cases Morrisons brand products purely to stop a conflict of interest between the stores.

You've just inadvertantly admitted that Morrisons and Safeway are not the same thing! Just because Safeway is run by Morrisons it doesn't mean it is Morrisons. Come on t020, it's obvious you're being pedantic, so please just drop it.
Whenever possible I shop at Netto once you have been there a few times and know what to avoid there are some right bargains. You often find stuff the same or better quality than in some of the more "up-market" stores for much cheaper prices!
A.B.Yaffle 07-07-2004, 14:39 I agree about Netto... I pop in when I'm passing every week for my fiancee's supply of 2lt bottles of Pepsi Max for 69p! lol
You'll probably laugh at this but you really should try the own brand cola, I really like it. It is the only really cheap cola I can drink, so much better than Asda, Tesco own brand cola. I would actually choose it over most other makes now. Only comes in a "no added sugar" version though.
A.B.Yaffle 07-07-2004, 14:46 Morrisson's own brand drinks are quite good ... and they do unusual flavours like Banoofeeade AND they do their own brand of Dandelion & Burdock!!
I used to love Morrisons own brand D&B never manage to get there any more though!
Over the last couple of years Netto have improved in leaps and bounds........unlike kwik slave/scummerfield who have dropped off the face of the earth

Nice! I call them Sonofabitchfield
I have favoured Sainsbury's for quite a while but have recently discovered the joys of Tescos!! Tesco is a fantastic supermarket, great prices, and the food is of excellent quality!!!
What is your favourite supermarket and why?
Sainsbury's is 2nd as its a bit pricey
Asda 3 rd as excellent value for money, but certain products are a bit cheap
Morissons (And now safeway) 4th- What a disaster that is. Buy one get one free evrywhere ok- but often on tacky meals.. Morrisson's own brand is by far the worse of all supermarkets- and they sell meals that you'd find in tacky Jack fulton's!!! You do get the odd bargain or two, including morrissons Fresh pizza, they are very nice..
All the other supermarkets are very obviously terrible, netto, aldi and all the rest what a disaster!!
Internetowl 11-08-2004, 17:05 We use Asda, Tescos and Morrisons - they all have good and bad points. Tried Lidl once - never again...
royjames 11-08-2004, 17:15 Netto is the place to go for real value for money,I dont shop anywhere else.
ToryCynic 11-08-2004, 17:18 Usually we shop in Morrisons as that is the closest one. Second closest is Asda. Morrisons is crap IMO, poor quality food, etc.
Alex
Usually shop at Sainsbury's, but am being drawn to ASDA more and more, it has improved so much since Wal-Mart took it over.. depite my dislike for their no union policy.
I think Sainsbury's is the best. Their own brands are usually very good quality compared with other supermarkets.

None - I'd rather support the local, smaller, independent businesses in my community than large, unethical corporations who sell generally inferior produce.
JonJParr 11-01-2005, 15:27 So where does everybody choose to do their food shopping? The mighty Tescos, the luxury food halls of M&S or your local grocer / butcher?
NatalieSheff 11-01-2005, 15:38 wish i did more local shopping - at a proper green grocers. get meat for hub from a farm, big shop morrisons or tesco, little shop m and s. nip into asda if i visit my nan, to take her some goodies. i basically shop where ever convenient as they all about same price wise
Hi Jon.
It is difficult to say for us really.
For big shop its Either Tesco or Morrisons.
If we are at Murderhall we get things from marks & sparks.
If we walk into our town (Dinnington) we call at the butchers, and for bits and bobs of things we forgot we use the corner shop, so a variation really.
beansfeast 11-01-2005, 15:42 There should be another option on the Poll for 'All the Above'!
I get fed up of shopping because no 1 store has everything I want. End up visiting about 3 stores a week...
neeeeeeeeeek 11-01-2005, 15:45 Ahhhh Waitrose, Shop of Kings...
:D
SaxonLeigh 11-01-2005, 15:58 yeah, same with me depends on what i'm wanting, i find Asda is good on price but lacks variation, morrisons has the best selection on the fresh counters (pies, bacon, fish etc) but is a bit of a treck for me, have to go t'other side of doncaster or bramly, tescos is the closest & most convinient for me, it has a wide variety of goods i want, is priced reasonably & is open 24hours during the week (so good if i need munchies). the others, i havent shopped at the others
Either Waitrose or Sainsbury's. I like the big range of products / brands...
ASDA for the weekly shop, but as Waitrose is just down the road we go there if we need a few things in the week, and to get the food magazine because it has good recipes in it.
You didn't open a multi-vote poll :( I shop everywhere on that list
My mum goes to Morrisons, so therefore I shop at Morrisons :P
I'm only 17, how many of you did the weekly shopping at 17?
I hope you're not going to start a 'badboyracer' type thing, ian!
I shopped at seventeen, but I had two baby brothers at the time, and my mum had her hands full.

I would gladly do the shopping but for one thing my mum wouldn't trust me (I'd just stock up on beer and crisps).
incognito 11-01-2005, 18:15 I shop at asda, online, and thats only cos morrisons dont do online shopping!
was there an 'online' option? :)
steevie/d 11-01-2005, 18:17 morrisons 4 me buy 1 get 1 free:)
Asda for me, but being going to Aldi recently and they have seem decent stuff in - particularly Beer and Wine.

The other half and i went to do the weekly shop in Waitrose the weekend it opened....novelty value and all that.
We got halfway through...looked down in the trolley....added up the prices.....then legged it.
It was easily 30% more expensive than our usual (Tesco / Morrisons).
Morrisons every time. Cheap and cheerful and loads of bogofs. I don't buy meat from there though, go to sainsbury's or waitrose.
Think there needs to be another option on the poll :P I don't just shop at one place you see :shakes:
royjames 11-01-2005, 21:37 Well I shop at Netto and I get good value so I dont care if you laugh or not,at the end of the day I can buy more than you for less money.

I shop at Netto for basic things like pasta, tinned tomatoes, milk, etc. - the staple stuff that you can't go wrong with. Other than that it's Beanies on Crookes Valley Road for vegetables, Morrisons for the rest.
FairyNormal 11-01-2005, 21:39 We go to Morrisons once a week for a main shop then pick up bits and pieces as we need them, mainly from Kwick Save as it's just accross the road. I get my fruit and veg fresh as we need it from the local green grocers.
And I will admit to popping into Netto on a Friday on my way back from college, usually to pickup a loaf of bread and some bacon for our Saturday morning butties!!
Bacon- from Netto??!?!
