View Full Version : News: Mobile phones can cut a man's fertility by a third
From the Sunday Times (http://www.timesonline.co.uk/newspaper/0,,176-1159951,00.html)
RESEARCH into the fertility of men who regularly carry and use mobile phones has suggested their sperm count can be cut by up to 30%, reducing chances of conception.
Meh, another mobile phone related health scare... :loopy:
The government needs to shut up, I'm sure most of their Ministers and even Mr Blair himself spend half their lives with their ears stick to the business end of a mobile, and they're perfectly safe on them.
They should try holding them to their ears.. (adopts Homer Simpson voice) lousy vibrating alerts.
No, good scientific reasoning on this one.
If the testes are warm, they produce less fertile sperm, I believe. This is one reason why they hang down.
Some years ago there was a study on the flight deck crews of aircraft carriers after the fertility amongst such men was noted to be lower than other ratings. The study was carried out of men who were serving on US carriers during the Viet Nam war. What was believed to be happening was that the aircraft came in from raid and needed re-arming quickly, so the crews would race up to the aircraft as soon as it touched down. The pilots didn't bother turning off the aircraft's radar systems, as the idea was to get the plane back up as soon as possible. The result was that the fitters got a load of microwaves reflected from the metal decking over the lower parts of their bodies. The microwaves heated the water in the bodies of the fitters, and so raised the temperature marginally.
This was reputed to be the cause of the lost fertility - the heating effect of the microwaves form the radar. As the frequencies used in mobile phones are close to microwave frequencies, perhaps this fertility issue could also be due to heating effects?
The heating effet was actually noticed originally when they were first developing radar valves, and engineers were reputed to warm themselves by standing in front of microwave emitters!
And then came the microwave oven....

Sounds like bollucks to me.
Chris.
Looks like no kids for me then, spend about 6 hours a day on a mobile
These reports come out every few months saying the same thing just reworded. Nothing worth knowing imo.
what doesn't lower your sperm count these days?!?! lol
Perhaps radiation or something from the computers you are sitting at lowers your sperm count? eh? :P
SilentStatic 02-07-2004, 11:03 I fail to see how a mobile in my pocket on the other side of my leg is going to heat my sperm
According to the papers flip flops reduce fertility as well
This has to be a load of carp!. Think about it logically if it were true the chavs wouldn't be breeding like flies would they ?
Sam Miguel 02-07-2004, 12:53 I would suggest that flip-flops don't so much as reduce fertility, but increase the desire to get intimate with members of the sex which happens to attract a person.
A recent survey which was carried out in Scunthorpe last December, showed that only a meagre 13.72% of the population of this dreary town had ever worn flip-flops at all. Of these, 7% were men and 8% women.
Only 4% of the men (Frank Eccles from Flag Street) thought the bland foot-furniture a turn on, whilst only 3% of women qustioned (Frank's wife Edith) said they wore flip-flops in the bedroom to please their men.
Staggering stuff.
The "research" doesn't exactly appear thorough. I'm reminded of a line from "Yes, Prime Minister" - "All cats have four legs. My dog has four legs. Therefore my dog is a cat".
I don't think carrying a mobile can be the only common factor with the guys they sampled.
I dunno about this particular research but the link between heating and reduced sperm quality is known, as is the heating effects of microwaves on human tissue.
The signal strength from a mobile is low, but it's feasible for it to have a small heating effect. There was a similar worry about high power UHF / microwave radios and cataracts some years ago - the radio signals caused localised heating of the lens of the eye, and the het couldn't dissipate because of the lack of blood flow to teh lens - it was suggested that over a long time cataracts might be encouraged.
Again, not enough proof to pin anything on, but short of microwaving lots of Chavs we'll never find out....;-)

slimsid2000 02-07-2004, 15:15 I'm glad i don't have one.
A bit ironic really, as i suspect many people (especially teenagers) get mobile phones for image reasons (ie attract girls).
Sam Miguel 02-07-2004, 16:17 Oh, the research is thorough all right: I did it I'll have you know! When I research a subject, I throw myself in it deep-style and don't give up until I get the required information. I spent almost a full afternoon in Scunthorpe and asked over a dozen people two or three questions each.
I hope that clears that one up.
akihabara 04-07-2004, 14:50 It seems likely to me that long term usage of mobile phone causes headache. Radio wave (which is energy flow) from mobile phone might affect thermal situation or something in your head when you hold it close to your head.
Given the roundness and sensitivity of the objects, I find it believable.
If this is true then we should hopefully see the townie and chav population diminish as they all carry at least one mobile in their pockets. However, I think some of them are are getting wise to this as they are hanging them around their necks on those straps.
Only time will tell:rolleyes:
