It's a very severe and prolonged case of sickness and vomiting during pregnancy, not just your average case of morning sickness ;)

No Not anymore. I have three times though. The reason it was three times and not one only was because I wasn't informed properly the first two times. I have now been informed that another pregnancy would be detremental to my own health and not to continue having children.

Interesting to see people sometimes think that it is just Morning sickness.

I am interested in counselling sufferers and have applied via www.hyperemesis.org.uk. Ironically they are too ill at the moment to maintain the site.

My sister suffered from this during both her pregnancies. It was so bad during her 1st pregnancy (after she gave birth she weighed a good deal less than she did before she got pregnant) that she waited 5 years before she could face a second pregnancy. I went to stay a number of times to help look after my niece & my sister when she was pregnant the second time. She was too ill to cope with normal housework and cooking was definitely out of the question.

A lot of people seemed to think she was just over reacting (which was infuriating) & it was just morning sickness (with various people stopping just short of telling her to stop making a mountain out of a molehill :rant: ) but it's far more extreme than that. From what I've read some women suffer so severely that they are forced to terminate the pregnancy as in the most extreme cases the expectant mother can die :(

I think it's one of those conditions that unless you experience it or know someone who has you don't realise quite how devastating it is. It seems particularly rough that you're missing out on enjoying the pregnancy & just wishing the whole thing was over :(

i know the diffrence, had 4 children and 2 of those i could not eat or drink anything execpt water for 6 months in both pregnancies.

So when i said morning sickness that is how it was told to me when i was pregnant.

Sorry Rosie - didn't mean to imply that you didn't know the difference between morning sickness & Hyperemesis Gravidarum. I was actually meaning that some of my sister's friends assumed that they were one & the same thing & couldn't seem to grasp the fact that Hyperemesis Gravidarum is far more serious & can be life threatening.

I think that you are classed as suffering with Hyperemesis Gravidarum if you cannot keep anything down.

It peaks at around 7 weeks when your HCG levels are at their highest, as they double daily.

By the time I was taken to hospital both times I was vomiting on average every three minutes. I couldn't keep fluids down. At this point your liver starts to go into failure (producing toxins into your bloodstream )and your veins collapse due to dehydration which makes the whole things get worse.

Both times the doctors had trouble getting an IV into me as my veins were so poor.

I did have a termination with my first pregnancy due to this.

But hey after 9 months of that............Labour was a breeeeeeezzzeee. I was so glad to pop those babies out. lol

Your sister has my full empathy with this. The fact that people think you are making mountains out of molehills just makes it worse for you. I did actually think the first time around that they were right and I was pathetic. Which was a little strange and confusing as I am not soemone who visits the doctors frequently. I normally have the constitution of an ox and can deal with pain and such like very well.

Did your sister suffer anything strange after her births?

I had this - completely bed ridden for about 8 weeks, then vomited everyday for the rest of the 9 months. Everytime I moved my head I was sick. Spent chirstmas in hospital as well as my birthday attached to a drip.

Worth it for the little honey I've got now (10 months), but don't fancy doing it again in a hurry!

But men seem to have it tougher emotionally as expressing emotions doesn't seem to be the done thing. At least we have PMT and the menopause as valid excuses to vent !
