I know the feeling. Have just bought a family ticket for a childrens production at the Lyceum at a cost of £44. I would love to take the kids more often but at those prices it is a couple of times a year event only.

Mo ,you could try the Ribcage production in Hillsborough park this weekend. £3 for adults, £2 for kids. Amateur theatre, but beautifully acted, superbly written, wonderful setting (the author of this e-mail may have a vested interest).

There are loads of amateur groups around. Try the University Drama Studio as a first point of call. The standard will vary but the prices are low.

There is loads of professional theatre about for reasonable money... although sometimes you have to travel. You can often see the same shows that are on at Sheffield Theatres for a fraction of the price.... for example i can go and see Fame or Teechers in Wakefield for £9 (£3 con), but will be paying £18 i believe, or there abouts, if i watch them here in Sheffield.

I often travel to Hull Truck Theatre to watch shows, they are of a very high quality and you can watch the Matinees for £4.50.

West Yorkshire Playhouse also has some good deals, and very high quality shows.

In sheffield there probably too many amateur companies, which means the 'talent' is often spread a little too thin, but you can catch some good shows.

Thanks for the tip smiler but couldn't go as I was involved with the Bolsover childrens festival this weekend.

Would you give any future productions a plug on here Smiler as I would love to give you support.

If you look at details of the plays at

http://www.sheffieldtheatres.co.uk/index.cfm?fuseaction=whatson.glance

you will see that some have a public dress rehersal [PDR] and this is usually just as good as the show on other nights but is usually only a quid to get in

If you signup for the email alerts on front page of their site, you will get emails saying what is coming out soon and it says in there if a PDR is happening and also the costs etc :P
