View Full Version : Double Glazing?
SilkKendiron 28-06-2004, 13:30 I've just read some scary stuff on Blagger.com about double glazing salesmen & companies. Can anyone recommend a company, specifically for two doors now, and 8 windows later?

SilkKendiron 28-06-2004, 13:32 Sorry about that; the really scary stuff's at http://www.guyweb.co.uk/archives/000719.asp
1Man&hisBMW 28-06-2004, 14:28 Warwick Developments, in Ecclesfield I think.
They will do you a good discount if you say you hear about them from a friend! Their windows are good too.
yorkiepudd 02-07-2004, 18:30 Yep...Warwick Developments, very (and I mean very) highly recommended.
robirisc 24-08-2004, 23:18 Hi steve, i've 'just' gone (fitted 1st september) with Classic Windows Dronfield, they gave me a really good quote 2100 for six very big windows, and the bloke who came round was like someone from pheonix nights.
the numbers um...01246290455
winner!
Is that the typical sort of cost of windows these days?
geronimo171 09-12-2004, 18:25 there's also sheffield based www.doublesurewindows.co.uk
they were recommended to me and i am very pleased with their work.
i went for askhams on chesterfield road, heeley.
friendly blokes.
I suggest the "Real yorkshire window company"
Factory is on the hellaby industrial estate, been established for 22 years. not the cheapest but by far the best with 10 year guarentee and 10 point security checks.
amii91213 29-12-2004, 18:11 I've just ordered windows from Alan Young on the recommendation of a friend. She has just had her whole house done and they've left a very professional finish.
I've just ordered an attic dormer window and he has quoted me MUCH less than previous companies (inc Yorkshire Windows)!!!
I have his details if you're interested. and he says all his work is covered by FENSA (I think it is called) - so it is all officially covered!
....And he seems like a nice guy!
Just had Safeguard build our conservatory and they did an OK job. They do double glazing too.
I think FENSA stands for Fenestra Self Assessment so not sure whether it's actually worth anything.
coopster1974 29-12-2004, 18:44 Try Sheffield Window Centre - bit more expensive than others but the quality is obvious.
Bonus is that they will give you a quote then leave you alone - the onus is on you to contact them if you want to proceed.
marycrookes 30-12-2004, 18:52 Classic windows and doors at Dronfield, just done my front door and side panel and it's excellant.
espadrille 30-12-2004, 19:01 I agree with Viking.
The Real Yorkshire Windows!
Hi guys
I will follow up some of these companies too. Had staybrite round last night and they quoted me just under £8k for 2 (yes just 2) bay windows. They said the high price was because they were actually 6 windows :suspect:
While I don't doubt the quality there was the ususal huge discount, I could have them for £3.5 is I signed there and then which I was not going to do, even if I could hear the manager having a go at the rep on the phone. In fact I told the rep to tell his manager I wouldn't be pressured.
Very upsetting and a waste of 2 and a half hours of my friday night!

People should never use these sort of companies, they make so much money out of people who don't bother to shop around. How much profit most they have wanting to make if they would charge £K, but were willing to come down to £3.K.
In my quest to have done every job, I have worked fitting windows and doors before, and know what they cost. The best Idea is to try and get recommendations from friends, family, and try to find a small independent company that won't charge the earth.
1Man&hisBMW 09-01-2005, 11:06 Why not ring around and ask for 'supply only' and see how much they are charing for the fitting? Might give you a good indication of who is trying to rip you off and who is genuine :)

Actually it is a legal requirement for your installation to be either registered with FENSA or inspected by the local council building department
It is also a legal requirement to have a certificate from one of these if you sell your house - It is illegal to sell your house without it

I'm in the process of buying a house which is partially double glazed. The windows aren't FENSA and the vendor reckons she didn't know they had to be even though she's only had them done in last couple of years. Apparently she's signed a disclaimer with her solicitor so they don't have to be registered or inspected by local authority.

Unfortunately that's not possible - if they were fitted after 1st April 2002 they must either be registered with FENSA or inspected by the local building authority
You should ask them to get them inspected before you buy the house otherwise you could end up with windows that you could be ordered to remove with no notice - you should also report the solicitor that has told you this because it is totally untrue
The main reason for the registration/inspection is thermal efficiency and cutting energy use - so there would be no point in allowing people to ignore the rules
We had a window put in by Vision Windows. They are in yellow pages. The bloke was straightforward and price reasonable. They did a rush job 'cos we were having building work done so they only had about 6 days to get it fitted - very obliging.

Hi,
I think you will find that the solicitor has obtained an indemnity insurance policy for the buyer against any potential legal action in the future by the council.
This is common practice when purchasing houses that do not have all the required building regulations!
Hi there it is sometimes cheaper and more reliable to get the materials and the labour from seperate sources. We can quote you for the fitting of the 2 doors and all the windows if you wish and we will be able to get the windows and doors at trade prices. If you would like us to come and have a look then feel free to contact us, we offer a friendly and professional service and we are tradesmen, not salesmen so no pushy comments. Midas Maintenance and Renovation, call Simon or Jenny on 01709 510048/07931199377

treehouse 25-09-2009, 13:03 Hi there,
just wanted to bump this again - Other than companies mentioned here, does anyone have any recommendations? Have tried Sheffield Windows but they're a bit out of our price range (I'm really disappointed, actually, because I like what they stand for and I'd trust them) - have called Rhino Home Improvements who are calling round, at their insistence, when both my partner and I are in so they can show us their 'product', and also Classic are coming round to do a straightforward quote.
I don't want to sound tight and I don't want to risk getting a botch job, but my parents have recently been quoted £2.1K to get their whole house double glazed, and they live in a 4 bedroom new house with nice big windows. Is this average? They live in Teesside, about an hour south of Newcastle.
5 years on it'd be nice to know if the same places are still hailed as being providers of quality and good service.
WallBuilder 25-09-2009, 16:36 I've had a new door and two windows from Classic windows at Dronfield less than a year ago. I've had no problems, I didn't pay a penny till the work was done and the finish is great.
I foolishly got a few quotes from some of the bigger companies and had to almost physically throw one guy out he was so persistant, I don't think they understand thatmost of the old tricks are well known and so I wasn't fooled by the discount price, the offer of my house being a show house or even the I'll talk to my boss and get a further discount.
Annoying idiots but Classic came in, measured up left a brochure and departed withing 20 minutes, they weren't in the least pushy.

ACA Windows broadfield road they manufacture and also fit i always use them or recommend them if i'm busy they will be doing me some windows on my own house in the next month.
Askhams London road, i had mine done with them, they are deffo Fensa registered as i got my certificate soon after fitting, we didnt pay any deposit and payed when we were happy which we were, i also got my quote in writing which i think helps when making your decision
mellymoo 01-10-2009, 13:22 hiya, i would also reccomend askhams. had a bit of work done with them a while back and have had no problems with them at all.
hope this helps.
What about Frame-ups in Hillsborough? They have a very good reputation and have done a great job of one of my windows. Will also get them to do several more windows, as this is in a period property and I want a job well done.
I had safestyle UK round earlier trying to sell me some windows and doors.. the man was too nice, I felt I couldnt say no.. hes coming back in the morning, when I said my partner would be back.although hes missed call my mobile 6 times this evening..
Supposedly its by one get one free though :|

I know what you mean.
Ive just had a phone call from a really friendly Nigerian chap who informs me I have won a large sum of money. All I had to do was give him my bank details and he said the money would be transfered next week.
Brilliant! I cant beleve my luck:)
Try express windows. Got my windows done from them and they were far the cheapest quote I got. Was very happy with all the work from start to finish. Only got mobile no for them 07769723447. Not based in Sheffield but do plenty of work round here
Anyone got any up-to-date info (october 2009?). Some of those mentioned are no longer in business.

smooth144 13-10-2009, 11:30 just had 5 windows fitted with geogian fret in 5ft by 3ft sash type cost m3 £1500
door and frame £500
CT4UChris 17-10-2009, 22:57 you can give us a call, we're primarily supply only but can arrange fitting if required.
Cheers, C
Yes, disclaimers like that are quite common. It's not ideal but if a solictor is happy for it to be like that then it should al be above board.
If you want more of a guarantee when having double glazing done as at the end of the day, it's a huge expense, I used an installer that was a member of the Double Glazing Ombudsman, I think they cover conservatory installation too. Anyway, we had full peace of mind if anything went wrong or we weren't happy. Fortunately, the whole process went smoothly and the windows look great but that's not always the case as I have experienced in the past. I found out the info on the dgcos.org.uk website.
Alan AJF 06-06-2010, 16:24 Hi,
We're a family run company who provide window and door installations. We're a UK trades member and are Certass registered (you'll receive a certificate after the installation which ensures that we comply with the current house selling process).
All work is guaranteed and we've received good feedback from our customers. I fit myself and do not use any sub-contractors.
Alan
I had a very bad experience with Safestyle salespeople.
The young man who came and stopped for 3 hours wasn't too bad but 'his boss' on the phone at the end of the demo was, to put it politely extremely abusive.
I wouldn't use them now if the gave me the windows and door for free.
I went with Yorkshire Windows...a very refreshing change of selling technique.
interiorhead 02-08-2010, 15:10 Good tips from everyone I got bombarded when I got a couple of the bigger named companies in to look at our double glazing. I almost had to move just for the number of phone clals in the end!!
ChrisT70 02-08-2010, 15:16 I cant understand how safestyle continue to trade in this day and age?
they send round chavs in tracksuits to line you up for an appointment with an actual salesman. the salesmen try on various underhand techniques, ie huge discounts to sign there and then, ringing the boss to ask for a special discount etc etc.
and they are hugely expensive on the quotes.
the final nail in the coffin would be the embarrasing adverts they use, if they were the only company in the world allowed to install double glazing i wouldnt employ them based purely on the idiotic adverts.
safestyle quoted me £6k, then £5k, then 2 hrs later 4k and then withdrew the offer when i said i needed time to think. Yorkshire windows beat them on price very easily and did a superb job.

because for every person who complains about them (and there's loads and loads) there's 5 that buy things from them - the company does millions of pounds worth of business every week and will continue to do that forever unfortunately for people who try doing things the right way (non pressure, tactics, gimmicks etc) makes you think if honesty/decent ethics pays sometimes????
donkeyburns 21-08-2010, 10:57 Anyone had any double glazing fitted recently? Any recommendations would be grateful.
i work for a company and we'd be happy to quote you and/or give you customers who we have installed work for
if you would like a quote contact 01709 528000 or if you know the sizes then you can get a free online quote by going to
www.rhinohomeimprovements.co.uk
hope this helps
rudijosef 23-08-2010, 10:11 We have always had a good service form Sheffield Windows! Their polocy is not to hassle customers so after the initial quote the leave it to you to contact them.
For the most energy efficient windows that confirmwith the new Part L building regs that come in to force in October ask for Planiterm glass. It ensures you get a window engery rating (WER) of A or B (the new minimum rating is C) and it is still cost effective!
If you need any more help or advice please get in touch...
Does anyone know of companies supplying and fitting aluminium double glazing windows and doors in Sheffield? Thanks
I am wanting someone who I can ring for repairs and installations on an ongoing basis, at a reasonable price, for the property company I work for ? Any recommendations ?
robdylan 12-10-2011, 20:06 ibbo,
Hi there! I can highly recommend a friend of the family called Lee Feetham. Myself and members of my family, use him regularly for all different types of jobs that we require. He's very reliable and a hard worker. We've known him for quite some time so I don't mind recommending his services. His number is 07588623365 I hope this helps.
Regards, Rob.

V.I.P-DJ 19-10-2011, 17:05 call richard on 07810008700 and just say david reccomended him great quotes
joiner andy 19-10-2011, 18:18 call for a quote
Ryan Fleming 31-01-2012, 13:43 If you are still looking check us out mate gu3 windows and doors supplied and fitted in Sheffield. I must admit it is quite hard nowadays to find a local company trustworthy enough because of the horror stories you hear about the "larger" companies. My advice is phone around and check not only the price but how you are treated by staff etc (it makes a difference) Customer after care is just as important as care whilst undertaking the job IMO. ;)
