But did you check out the section on north east/midlands food in that guide they gave away.

It didn't get a mention. Nor did any restaurants in Sheffield. Thyme's been listed in top 50 in UK before now, so I would have thought that it at least would deserve a listing as well as Milano

Nice restaurant in the medium to high price range (£75 3 course for two). Service was a bit overly attentive last time I went, and it is definitely busy - not always condusive to an intimate meal -but as long as you book a week or so in advance you should be OK.
Far superior to Blue Room brasserie nearby.

:) Went to marco milano on archer road the other night to celebrate friends birthdays.
It was superb beautiful food, lovely surroundings and competent staff.

Down side...expensive, but they do say you get what you pay for!

So, if you want to treat yourself and celebrate a special occasion with style go there!

We had a lovely meal there just after Christmas, it was busy but everything was spot on. The owner has bought a few things from us and you can tell that he has a real eye for detail and cares about what goes on in his restaurant. The other one that has a similar approach is from Rafters at Nether Green, we had a very good meal there recently, great value we thought.

voice of dissent here,

me and my fella went there a few months ago. and it was Alpha and Omega time (first and last :hihi:)

pricey, sure, and the premises definitely look "swish", but I didn't think the food was any great-shakes, at all.

Asked for a slight alteration to the meal we were trying to order, and they would not substitute an ingredient. (not a difficult thing to do, IMO, )

whatever happened to "the customer is always right"?

they won't be getting our custom again, I'm afraid. I thought they were rubbish. (also, another minus was that the access to the narrow corridor that led to the disabled loo was blocked by a sideboard, so was hardly passable by someone ambulant, let alone someone with a mobility prob/ wheelchair user)

Hi, just wondered what this place was like as are thinking of going next Tuesday for a birthday. I have heard good things about it but just wanted to check that it is as good as people have said as I have just looked on the website at the prices!

There is another Italian on the corner of the same road which is good too, atmosphere wise I'd say it's better, much more relaxed.

Mrs B and I have been twice, in the first year after it opened. The first time, the food was good, but the service was condescending and verging on rude. We went again to see if we'd been unlucky; we hadn't - exactly the same.

If it's under new management since then, I might go back; otherwise, go to Artisan in Crosspool - that's how to run a restaurant.

We waited 45mins for the table which we had booked, so I had to go and say that we were starving, and eventually we were seated in the corner under the stairs where you go up to Catch, and it sounded like a herd of elephants stomping over our heads every 5mins... then we were continuously ignored all meal, received cold food and only got the jug of water we asked for at the beginning once we were ready to leave! Not sure if we will go back again which is a shame because we had a nice meal the first time.
On the other hand, we had lovely service both times we have been to Marco's...

u shud try Rossi's on london road...fantastic food and service :D its got 2 b the best restaurant in sheffield by a long way. atmsophere is gr8, food is amazing, staff friendly, not 2 expensive either wich is the iceing on the cake!!!

Marco's is in a different league. Rossi's is an average, dated restaurant in need of new ideas and a new menu. Went there a couple of weeks ago, decidedly mediocre.

Is there some reason that Davidcharles and lol56 are "bigging up" Rossi's and Azzuro on multiple threads? Both have very few posts? Seems very fishy to me. Either of you have any connection with the aforementioned places?

Haha I thought that! :hihi: But anyway I really like both those places, good service and nice food.
I really miss going to Viva Latino's on London rd, anyone ever go there? It closed last year :( Had such a great atmosphere.

Yes this does seem strange seen as Rossis and Azzuri are owned by the same person.

P.S.
How do you get your quote in a box ?

You don't need the food poisoning from a rancid old steak that a friend had though.

They are sock puppets (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_sock_puppet#Astroturfing) doing a bit of astroturfing... and we've sorted it. If you see it again please use the 'report post' link.

The fact that it actually says "2 course £25 per head sample menu" should have made it even clearer to understand bobbyblade!

Also note that this "2 courses for £25" offer comes under the (also very clear ;)) heading "Party Sample Menus"... I am assuming that "party" indicates a group of people and may not be a special offer available to couples.

Err, it's very nice but let's not too carried away. It's still only a (very good) upmarket Italian restaurant, and won't be worrying Michelin any time soon. :)

My family ate there in November - there were seven of us and the food was excellent, service impeccable and the wine was good. Pricey but I would rather pay for food that is cooked to order than something warmed up in a microwave. Sheffield is lucky to have such a restaurant. I live in Wolverhampton - people here wouldn't know good food if it jumped up and hit them. Nonna's on Eccleshall Road is good too.

As I've said before in this thread, Mrs B and I haven't been to Marco's for a few years as a result of poor experiences on two consecutive visits.

But, since my Mum was in town I thought it might be worth giving them another go.

A table was available, but I was asked to pay a £10 deposit per head to book for a Saturday evening.

EH ?? Why ? I've only heard of this on one other occasion (at a restaurant in London) and I didn't go there either.

I don't care how good their restaurant is (or how good they think it is) this is completely unjustified IMHO.

Very poor, Marco, very poor.

Hi,thought i'd set the record straight. I am a regular at Marco @ Milano and and when they started asking for a deposit on a Saturday i too questioned it. The reason they do this is because on a few occasions people have booked tables and not turned up, i was told on one occasion this happened three times in one night! this is a way of ensuring that the tables that are booked out will acutally be used. It is only a deposit and the money is taken off your bill, if you can't make it on the night but you do call to let them know, you can use your deposit on another occasion.
It's a shame when people who don't realise this is a family run business, put negative comments on forums like this when they have no good reason and if they had asked for an explanation to why the deposit is required they would have been given one.

Mr B
15-04-2009, 12:06
The reason I didn't ask for an explanation is because I'd worked out for myself that the deposit is to minimise the loss of income from no-shows.

But aren't no-shows a problem for any restaurant ? What makes Marco's so different ?

If I book a table and then can't go, I phone the restaurant and tell them - I appreciate that not everyone does, but I'm not being negative, I just don't see why they should be different from virtually any other restaurant I've ever been to.

What's it like there at the moment tho? Is it better than most other places??? I loved Nonnas when it first opened, right up until the bar opened as it is now - Is it like Nonnas was, or better??? Hoping it's great as I want to have my birthday there;)

I think you will find that almost all the really successful restaurants, Fat Duck, El Bulli, etc require at least a creditcard number/reference when booking. If it works for Marco, then good luck to him, he's been around long enough to know what he is doing. If you book a seat at the theatre you pay for it before you go - difference?

Milano's is very good, but I wouldn't put it in the same league as El Bulli. Has the Fat Duck reopened?

I believe it has re-opened.

El Bulli may be in a different 'league' but they operate a system which mitigates their losses in the event of a booking not turning up. Marco does the same as he obviously feels he can afford to. As I said previously, good luck to him. I would do exactly the same if I ran a restaurant which was regularly turning away bookings on Friday's and Saturday's then looking at an empty table when someone doesn't turn up.

Fair enough. Tried to book a table at El Bulli, but you have to book months in advance, so went to Cellar Can De Rocca in Girona - it was amazing.

It's near impossible to book a table at El Bulli. I think you have to get in on the first day by e-mail, mid-January.

cellar De Rocca sounds fantastic. I've never heard of it, though I'm sure I've read before about one of their signature dishes, the 'Trip to Havana'. Did you have this dish?

There's some pics that I came across if you want to relive the memory:
