I need to get to stansted airport from sheffield on 4 July. My flight is at 12.30 (daytime) so I need to the at the airport before 12. What is the best way to go because the trains to stansted do not arrive before this time and the only bus leaves at 1.30 in the moring and arrives arrives at about 7 which is to early. Any ideas?

If that is the only train the best option is the coach! Surly if your flight is at 12.30 they would want you to arrive before 10.30. Also if you are traveling on anything other than a train you want to leave loads of time incase of roadworks and accidents etc it is the M1! That does seem horrible early but its probably better than being late!...

If you cant get a friend or relative to drive you there then take the bus.
It only takes a few hours to get there by car but as said previously you need to get there a few hours before your check in time.

There are also some lovely B&B's in that area but you still need a taxi in the morning.

I stayed at a Cattery near Stansted last time I went. It was £50 for the room, included breakfast and the owners include a drive to the airport for you as part of the price (not far).

I'd second the coach idea....failing that get a train to Kings Cross and then there's a shuttle train. You'd easily get there in time that way. Don't forget checking in times are at least an hour.

I had same problem a few months ago when I flew out of Stanstead and my mate ended up driving us down.

The Nat Express coach looked dire - it takes 7 hours.

The train is ok - try getting one to london and then out to Stanstead, I don't see why you can't get there for 10.30am. If it doesn't work out time wise then stay at the Youth Hostel round the corner the night before.

I should give yourself a day to get there. My son took his mother in law back a couple of weeks ago for a fllight at 6pm. They set off at 8 am and only just made the check in!!!
That was on a Tuesday morning.

It's a rotten airport to get too, I know lots of Easy Jet flights go from there but it's a horrid journey.
Good Luck.

Yes, not possible by rail on a Sunday, earliest option is 08:00 from Sheffield via Doncaster and London, arrives Stansted Airport 11:58.

What I suppose you could do is get the early megabus from Sheffield to London Greenline, then get Stansted Express train from London Liverpool Street to Stansted Airport.

I think staying over the night before sounds a much more attractive idea though!

I flew out from Stanstead on business a few months ago.

The only way I could get down there for a morning flight was to drive down the night before and stay in a hotel overnight.

No direct link public transport alternatives available. :loopy:

The solution is fly from a more sensible airport!!!

Manchester Airport, Nottingham East Midlands Airport, Luton Airport and Gatwick Airport are all easier to reach from Sheffield!

That's right, but in my case the flight I needed only flew from Stanstead.

You should be able to get a coach to London from Sheffield on a Sunday that gets you in before that, then you can either get a 30m train (from Liverpool Street) or a 1 1/2 hr bus to Stanstead

Try the National Express Website > Here (http://www.nationalexpress.com/enq/)

I checked for you - the earliest coach arrives at 8.55 am, in Stanstead, but leaves sheffield at 1.40am!!

Good Luck!

Looked into the timings of this one, and it's a bit risky...

Sheffield Arundel Gate dep 05:55 (Megabus route M12)
London Greenline Coach Station arr 10:15

London Liverpool Street dep 10:45 (One Stansted Express train)
Stansted Airport arr 11:29

Yep I can confirm Stansted is shocking for public transport.
I had to catch a plane to Helsinki at about 530 ish, only way was to stay over with my parents who live about 20 miles away and get them to get up in middle of the night to take me there.

One other thing - its ok to sleep in the airport - I saw plenty of people doing it with no hassle. Not reight comfy tho.

i'd really reccomend getting a national express coach to golders green (north london) and then catching the stanstead express coach to the airport, they run quite regularly from golders green and I think you can buy your tickets on the bus.
Or, get the coach to victoria, travel by tube to liverpool street and get the direct train to stanstead - probably more expensive, but it may be quicker.

I have just booked my holiday flights and I am returning from Ljubljana via Berlin solely to fly into Luton and avoid Stansted transportation problems! The two flights actually ended up cheaper than the one as well!

When i had to catch a morning flight from Stansted, i jumped on a GNER train from Donny to Peterborough, then a Central train from Peterbrough to Stansted. Total journey time just over 2 and a half hours.

hi,

I am a student fro reading University. I travelled to United Kingdom last year and wanted to pass some usefull information to fellow student who are travelling to UK. I would advise them to book their airport Taxi Transfer Before hand they can do it with HUMMINGBIRD CARS

They are very proffessional and also affordable for students.

They also provide 5 % discount if you book any return jouirneys

Thanks

Stansted can very very unpredictable traffic wise. The A14 which joins the M11 has an appalling accident rate and can quite frequently be closed during peak traffic times. Personally set off very early or go the night before. You have been warned :D
