As some of you may be aware- I've not been on here for a couple of days due to my dad having 2 strokes in the same amount of days it seems.. 1st one was a smaller one which the hospital did tests on and came back with a 'verdict' that he could go home :o - the 2nd one was a major one and my dad was rushed into hospital yesterday and they finally concluded that he has had a stroke...

Sorry, david blunkett could tell that my dad has had a stroke.
If I told him the symptoms I'm sure dave would have said the same thing- one side gone weird, slurred speech, couldnt walk properly and sapped of strength- now I'm no stephen hawking, but even I could see that from a mile off so why they couldnt diagnose this in the first place god only knows.

But thats not my gripe- oh no.
Over the past 2 days... I've had to endure, quite honestly some of the worst things I've ever encountered in my 27 years of life on this planet.

My dad went in I believe into the hospital sunday night around 6.30pm- he was then kept waiting nearly 5 hours in a cramped bed, in a cramped dingy room in A&E while a bed was made ready on the wards (we later found out today by speaking to someone working there that there were apparently plenty last night), my dad like myself, is quite a stockily built fella, so the little ass bed they put him in must have been horrible for him and it was quite evident that he was in some distress.

Was that not the end of the matter- oh hell no.
So having waited all that time- in a dingy bed, we kept complaining and trying anything we could to have dad shifted into a new bigger bed at least to make him more comfier which we didnt think was a major request to be fair..we got a bigger bed alright..

THEY PUT MY DAD ON A BED, IN A CORRIDOR FACING THE A&E ENTRANCE
Where incidentally they unload ambulance patients as well so dad was blocking the entrance there.

I had to be restrained this point dear friends, and thanks to my sisters boyfriend, I am glad he was there to lead me outside as I was on the verge of slapping the head nurse.

If a member of your family has had a stroke peeps- you will know that they cant do much, they sleep a lot, wake up and like my dad, possibly cant talk as well.. they cant do anything for themselves- its like going back to being a child.. so putting a 54 year old man, flitting in and out of conciousness, half naked except for a nightgown which was covered in blood, because the 'nurse' and I'll use that title loosely as well- cocked up putting the tube into dads arm came out making a right mess.

So all in all- possibly 2 of the worst days I've ever had.
If a member of your family has to be put into that pit, I emplore you, get them the hell out of it.

The chaos that was sunday night was not just felt by my family who were disgusted as well, we spoke to a few people who had been treated like the proverbial shoe dirt as well.. we're all not happy- expect something happening real soon!

PS: According to a poster in reception on the wall that we checked out in the main entrance as well today- Bassetlaw has the highest bacteria finds as well out of Northern General, Rotherham hospital and other surrounding area's ... be advised please.

PPS: Also had to mention this as well while its on my mind.
The staff on ward C2- yes they were helpfull to an extent, however I saw one nurse using her mobile phone today up and down the ward which we are told to turn off when entering the hospital also a male doctor eating what looked like a sandwich while holding a yellow specimen tin... most hygienic I found

Good god!

PPS: Also- my dads saline drip needed to be changed when we got there- that also took 2 1/2 hours to be done as well- even though we asked every 10 mins and got the same reply- someone is coming now.

Absolutely disgusting!

Went through a similar nightmare not long ago with my brother, he has now made a full recovery as no doubt your Dad will do and you can put this horrible experience behind you, Good Luck.

sorry to hear about your fathers treatment at basetlaw hospital and hope he recovers well.i had the same experiance at that hospital with my father,he went in for some tests as he was not feeling well.went to see him every day and on the thursday night left him and was expecting to pick him up on friday to bring him home,i went to visit at about 6 pm to find he had been moved from his ward and was told he had had a massive stroke at 2 in the afternoon.when i found my father he was in a very bad way and sadly passed away at 11pm the same night.it would have been nice for the hospital to have contacted our family and let us be there with him,but no i had to find out myself when i got there and had to phone my mum to tell her to come and my sister and brothers.this happend 3 years ago and i still feel like going into the hospital and creating merry hell for the treatment of my father and our family.i would never take anyone to that hospital in fact some weeks after i was in a car crash and was nearer to basetlaw than rotherham but made the ambulance take me to rotherham.
i hope your father gets well soon

ANG, I'm sure your dad will be ok hun!

My b/f's father suffered 2 really bad strokes last year.

It didn't help that he lives in Ilfracombe and we are in Sheffield. The hospital down there was marvellous and he was in there for months.
He didn't know who people were and like you said it is like dealing with a child again.
Numerous times he tried to get out and eventually they had to put him in the mental ward with bars on the windows.
We all thought that was the end of him and he would never get out.
Miraculously he has been out of the hospital for over 8 months, he is 100% now and you would never know there had been anything wrong with him.
I saw him last week and I couldn't believe it, apart from losing a little wieght he was the same person that he's always been and at 76 is ruder than ever.
One bad thing is that you can never now ring him just to have a 10 min conversation, he has you on the phone for hours and you can never get away, he can't half talk for England now.

I know exactly where you are coming from ANGELUS, When this happened to my dad I felt so helpless. I remember my dad asking for an extra sheet or a pillow and was told to wait a minute this took 2 hours. I made a point of following a nurse and finding out where they stored the clean linen, and when my dad needed them again I went to get them myself, the same thing happened when he needed bedpans, and jugs of water. My dad didn't want to be a burden on anyone, and he kept apologising to the doctors and nurses whenever he asked for anything. He was a very independent man and still tried to help himself, he also had lots of respect for people and would help anyone, its a pity he didn't recieve ant respect back from certain staff at the RHH and NG.
I know its not all staff, we did have some in fact most that went out of their way to help my dad, and we couldn't thank them enough they were true angels.

I'm so sorry to hear about your Dad suffering 2 strokes, Angelus - and about the awful experiences your whole family went through over the weekend :( I really hope your Dad gets better soon.

A lady who was very dear to me in my childhood and teenage years (she was effectively my surrogate grandmother) suffered a major stroke when I was 14, and it was a harrowing experience for all concerned. She fought through it though, and eventually regained her full powers of speech, and managed to be completely mobile again, although she did drag one of her legs slightly for the rest of her life. The doctors hadn't expected her to survive..... just shows what they know.

Don't get me started on complaining about hospitals - I will literally be here all day. Let's just say my opinion of the medical profession is not that high.....

Anyway, I'm thinking of you and your Dad, Angelus, and sending good thoughts your Dad's way.

Best wishes to both of you,

Sparkle x
