Anyone know what's going on at Crystal Peaks? They've built some new shops over on the retail park, next to KFC on what used to be the overspill car park. Does anyone know what's going to be in there?

Also, what's happening where the cinema used to be?

I noticed today that all four shops opposite Wilkinsons (The Officers Club, a curtain/bedding/furnishings type shop, a ladies clothes shop and an **** shop) are all closing down. What's going on there?

I haven't been up to Crysatl Peaks for a while but is there a TK Maxx opening soon? That could be one of the things.

That's actually an F.C.U.K shop. For some reason the forum censors that particular brand name.

Last time I went to Crystal Peaks was about this time last year, I don't rate it to be honest, never did... I s'pose it's good for people living out that way, like Mosborough, Waterthorpe etc who don't want to come all the way to Meadowhall, but it lacks good shops, and whoever decided to put no computer shops there, not even a Dixons or a Virgin Megastore or anything, should be shot, preferably out of a loaded cannon, with no parachute or safety net.

The Comets and Curry's are next door on the Drakehouse retail park.

There used to be a Dixons, but it closed down. It used to be where New Look is now.

Pizza Hut is opening in August I think. That's going to be one of the buildings near KFC on the retail park - there's a banner up advertising for staff.

Can't say I've been there since c.1994. Always used to scare me, and seems pointless now with Meadowhall.

I have not been to crystal peaks in a while. I was suprised when i heard the cinema had closed down, but i do think it was losing money(pitty really because it was nice that crystal peaks had a cinema). I do not think crystal peaks is pointless because of meadowhall, because people who live close to crystal peaks still go. I think they just want to make it bigger and make it so it has more shops or something like that. Probably trying to attract more people.

From what I hear, all of the bottom floor is going to be a new Sainbury's sipermarket. So they're probably rearranging it all while they get the chance.

princess_rockchick
27-06-2004, 17:24
So if the bottom floor is going to be a bigger sainbury's. whats going to happen to where sainburys is now?

George
27-06-2004, 18:16
well the new building over in the overspill car park at drake house is to be a number of shops i.e. t.k. max/boots/phone warehouse/and a ladies clothes store plus pizza hut,
the cinema is to become sainsburys and the shops that are closed across from wilkos are to become temp market cus the market is being made bigger, also where sainsburys is now will become a number of units/shops .
in other words its not big enough and they cant build any bigger so it looks like a shuffle about at crystal peaks.

I've heard on the grapevine that the new market is going to be where Sainsbury's now is.

In turn Sainsbury's are going to take over most of the bottom floor. This may sound all well and good, but the poor souls who put 15 years hard work into building up their small businesses in the food court were evicted earlier this year to make way for the all-consuming supermarket.

God knows how much revenue the Deep Pan Pizza restaurant and McDonalds have lost since the cinema closed down. I remember not so long ago that bottom floor was packed solid in the evening with cinema audiences who would have a meal while they were there. I myself used to go to movies starting about 10pm and often couldn't get in!

Now the final nail in the coffin has been the closing of the food court. Yet another amenity gone!

The food court always seemed quite popular. Certainly when I've been past, it's always been busy. Have they definatly been evicted? Surely there would be room to re-locate them elsewhere in Crystal Peaks.

This means shoppers wanting a cup of tea will be limited to the cafe next to Boots (opposite the market) or one of the stalls at the back of the market. Unless the new Sainsburys has a coffee shop, of course.

Do you know if the Pizza Shop/McDonalds are being moved also? I fear the Pizza Hut opening could mean the end of the Deep Pan Pizza shop.

The new Sainsburys WILL have a coffee shop so I'm told.

Now let me see...... I wonder if that has anything to do with the reason competing food outlets fro the food court were forced to close down?

I visit Crystal Peaks most days through work and can plainly see how people have 'voted with their feet' and stopped using the centre.

Were any of you among the crowds who used to visit the food court just for something to do in the mornings? I used to see the same people in there every day, spending their money and helping keep the whole place going.

Here's hoping the big bad Sainsburys crash and burn!

I often do my shopping at Crystal Peaks. I do my supermarket shop at Sainsburys then go in a few of the other shops as required. Today, I went for about 10am and couldn't find a parking space. This is because most of the car parks have been dug up or fenced off by builders.

After driving round a few times, I thought "sod this" and went to Morrisons instead. I'm told the work at Crystal Peaks will be continuing until summer 2005 - in that case they've lost a customer for the next year as I won't be going back. What use is a supermarket if you can't park your car? :loopy: :loopy:

When the new Sainsbury's opens there will be parking spaces on the roof of it to replace the lost parking spaces.

Looks like my prophercy to the girl on the Crystal Peaks customer services desk a few months ago is comming true then!

Loosing the cinema was a huge blow to the place. I used to go there regularly in the afternoon. probably around once a week or so. It's absolute nonsense to say Centertainment has taken their trade. If you live out at Bolsover (like me) or even Eckington, you now have a real trek to get to a cinema. As I've said before, I wonder how much evening trade McDonalds and The Deep Pan Pizza Co lost when it went? Did they get a reduction in their rent to compensate? I'd love to know.

The the food court closed and that was the real nail in the coffin for me! We were told it had to go to make space for the all-conquering Sainsburys, but if you looked real colse at the plans on display, you could work out the new shop didin't touch the food court area at all!

In my opinion, the big supermarket should be on a separate site where TK Max etc have appeared, and these smaller shops should have been the ones to include in the Crystal Peaks Complex.

But what do I know? After all, I have only been using the place for the last 15 years!!!!:P

I've only been to Crystal Peaks, can't say anything really good about it, it's just a local mall for people living in the area, hardly something to come from any other place in Sheffield for...

Good thing that it is there though, it offers more choice for local people, as this area is kinda new, it could have easily been completely dead.

CaptainSleep

I used to work at the mcdonalds in crystal peaks about just over four years ago.

The cinmema was always really busy until Chesterfield opened its version of the centertainment park and the attendances dropped by half overnight. Then centertainment opend and virtually all the customers left. The cinema just seemed way out of date compared to the newer multiplexes and couldn't compete. It was a shame as i used to get in for free.

Crystal peaks will always be just a local shopping centre for local people.

I live across the road from crystal peaks and from what i here there is going to be a next where the present sainsburys is and sainsburys will be relocated where the old food court used to be. There will also be a cafe in the new sainsburys hypermarket. The market place is currently being referbished. There will be a lot more clothes shops which has crystal peaks has been in need of for a long time.I think mini meadowhall is on its way thank god as meadowhall is meadowhell at christamas

got a few comments from traders on my recent visit.there is a temporary market opposite wilko's (where the shops used to be), this should be until Aug when the markethall will have been upgraded to a "mall" style market.the stalls will then return to the old market site again.
the shops opposite wilkinsons will then reopen as individual shops in their own right, hopefully increasing the number of ladies clothes shops even further(or not please!).
sainsburys will replace the whole cinema & food court area completely with its new store & coffee shop, there is talk about parking over sainsburys but no-one is clear on that yet.
extended parking has been provided next to TK Max - well it's always been there but it looked a state, at the moment parking is at a premium.
the old sainsburys and the front of the building is being extended to create more space for additional "larger" chains to tout their wares . they appear to have acepted the short term loss in trade for an increase after 2 years following the development.
i think it will be an improvement with more to offer , but i hope they divert all the traffice away from my house.
thsi will get even worse when the new school is built oin the land opposite CP.

There's movement afoot to situate a massive complex next to Rother Valley Country park on the A57? (the road that goes to M1 junction 31). It's about 5 mins from Crystal Peaks.

Cinema, Bowling, Couple of Hotels, Leisure Complex.

This is only in the planning stage at the moment, I read in the Sheffield telegraph that Sheffield were opposing the development, whilst Rotherham are all for it.

Crystal Peaks has always been quite dire in my opinion, not many clothes shops for men, an out of date supermarket, full of Chavs and in-breads, a nightmare trying to park your car.

But having said that when the new 'Next' opens along with a more modern Sainsbury's i will be tempted back to the old place.
And regarding Car parking i have noticed that the Council are installing new signs on the roads leading up to the complex, they have green boxes on the floor next to them,so i guess they will tell you where the empty spaces are which is a step forward.
All it needs now is for Eckington road to be made into a Dual Carriage way which is long overdue as the traffic is always busy and will only get worse.

I agree with that..though whenever I've gone there its always been busy so must be serving a local need (just not my needs!). Sounds like it may improve in time.

I live quite near to crystal peaks and not missed the cinema and food court at all. I thought they were dire too...IMHO of course!

The retailpark side is quite handy though (boots, sam jones etc) and that can get v busy too. Hope the parking gets sorted in time..

Agreed. The retail park is very handy and has practically every big store you could ask for.

hi,

does anyone know what the new shopping outlets in Crystal Peaks are going to be turned into. And please no one make any wise cracks about there being a sainsburys or a new market.

I am also interested to know what people would like to be here as well

Thanks

Just payed my first visit to the Peaks in months,Firstly parking was alot easier once i found the the car park on the roof had now opened and it was practically empty compared to the rest of the parking.
Went inside to be greeted with the newly opened extension with all the cheapo shops you could ever want,Peacocks,Mark One,Bon Marche etc. The place did look a lot more modern though and the new muffin and coffee shop looked quite nice for the Peaks.

Then i went to Iceland and bought some wine and then got asked for Id (im 33!) so im glad i look younger than 33,cheers Iceland.
Went back to the car park where on leaving the parking attendant waved goodbye.bless him.

I will proberly go a lot more when Sainsburys opens on the 18/02/06 but ive always felt that Sainsburys was out of place there and it would be better off being a Somerfield/Kwik Save,Lidl,Aldi.Netto.

And one final point does anybody else ever feel you should go their dressed in Trackie bottoms etc,as i always feel over dressed in Jeans and a normal top and Jacket!.

another final point i wish they would reduce the size of the speed humps in the car park they nearly reck the suspension.,and the painted lines they have to slow you down near the BP garage make the car slide to the middle of the road.

Yellowrose
01-01-2006, 15:47
OOH dont get me started on those speed bumps. When I go to Peaks I get them all the way there and all the way back. Not only do I have to contend with them within Peaks complex, but once across the roadabout, I have them all the way up Sothall Green and on Robin Lane. I have to really psyche myself up these days to make that journey ... and the poor old car has had to have its rattly exhaust fixed twice now.

Since moving here i use it all the time it's much easier than going into town and more useful than meadowhall. It a great place to go pick up bits from wilkos and the market.

CP has long been the mocking point for most people.

It had **** bargain shops (officer's club, that wallpaper one, etc) and it's full of old ******* stinking of **** and chav's in "hand-me-down" Kappa tracsuits sets.

I can see why they kicked out officers club and the rest of the crap ones and thought we might finally get some good shops here.

Been saying for ages, CP needs a department store and NEXT could be a saving grace for it. Also head that it was getting an argos but i think thats at the retail park now?

If CP can wean the smelly old ******* and chavs out and get some respectable shops in then it might salvage some respect.

The cinema HAD to go. It was great in its day and i went and loved it. (theres nout like paying £5.96 for 3 lumps of toffee at pick'n'mix) but when the centretainment place (UGC, now cineworld) is offering unlimited movies for £9.99 (now £10.99) a month and it was still charging £5....it had no chance...it didn't even try!!!

officers club elected to move out 'cos the notice period didn't allow them time to move elsewhere in CP, Northridge were in the same boat but managed to get their current place in the 11th hour.(only know 'cos i asked them when they were given notice to vacate)

There is a small papershop by the entrance to the market. It's a shame GT News pulled out - I don't know the story behind that - but perhaps people were doing more browsing than buying in there.
CP is primarily a local shopping centre and doesn't claim to compete with somewhere like Meadowhall. The completion of the current extension, in conjunction with the Drakehouse site, will mean there is a reasonable offering however.

What do people expect from CP? Imagine if it wasn't there! As a local shopping centre it's brilliant. You can buy food, clothes, DIY - loads of things! There's a market, fast food outlet and retail park too.
