Anyone know what Bobby Knutt is doing these days ?
We used love his shows when he did the WMC scene. The last time I saw him was at The Crucible in the panto Mother Goose, years ago. We get an ad for Tetley Tea here in Australia and I'm sure it's Bobby Knutts voice. Every time I hear him I laugh as I'm transported back in time to his hilarious act.

Bobby Knutt is still around. I don't know about performance wise but I see him about Hillsborough now and again. He usually parks his car at the side of our house!!

Never liked the bloke much myself, but each to their own.

Sorry to disappoint you, but that's Brian Glover doing the voiceover in the Tetley Tea ads. He played the sadistic games teacher in the movie Kes.

Many years ago he used to live in a cottage up Stannington down the road from me. He was always going to the local shop and filling up his old fashioned car with beer. Only dared knock on his door once, he signed an autograph and told me to never disturb him on a Sunday again. Ahhh lost youth.

I did see Bobby in "Heartbeat" some years ago now I think about it. Although I enjoyed his act it was difficult to take it too far away from Sheffield as in other parts of the country no one would understand him.

I once saw him at The Grosvenor along with Hale & Pace (when they were funny) at an advertising agency's Christmas bash in the 80s. He was way funnier than H&P.
I was on the dance floor later in the evening and a young lass (in a group of other young advertising bods) was talking to me and my missus and Knutty came and stood between us telling me, in no uncertain terms, that she was with him!! He was a well built fella with hands like buckets so I didn't argue, big as I am.. he wasn't joking I'll tell you.
Happy days.

That was probably Donna Hartley who won the 400m gold medal at the 1978 Olympics in Canada. They later married and she became a body builder, which was a shame, and worked out at a dance studio in Broomhill for a while.

IMO, she was the best thing about B Knutt.

Without wanting to cause any problems with Mr Knutt.. it most certainly wasn't Donna Hartley (**cough** if you know what I mean). I think he was dancing with her to be honest, but he didn't like the thought that I was moving in on her ( even though I was with my wife at the time).

Can you supply proof of that? I've tried for 2 days to find anything on the net without success. There's plenty of stuff about Brian Glover, but not a word linking Bobby Knutt with the Tetley's Tea ads.

I'm not saying it's not true, I'd just like to see it in black & white (or colour).

My brother in law played in a band, think it was the Whirlwinds and Bobby was involved with them too. Of course this was way back in the early sixties before he "took off" as a comedian.
What do you recall Timbuck ?

Yes Banksia, your Brother in Law played in a band, it was the Conways..Bobby Knut (then known as Bob Andrews) fronted the Whirlwinds..Before that at 16 years old I gave him his first job with the group that I ran (impersonating Freddy and the Dreamers) We were called "Bob Andrews and the Questors"...I had Bobs phone number so a couple of years ago I gave him a social type phonecall...He must have been in a bad mood or something because he wasn't very pleasant to talk to, and I've not bothered to talk to him since...His real name is "Robert Andrew Wass" from off Deerlands Avenue, Parsons Cross.

I thought you would have some info Timbuck, interesting too I might add !
You aren't the first to say he wasn't very pleasant to talk to. What a shame, I had this image in my mind of a man who would be fun to be around but it seems he's not that way at all. Just goes to show that even when you get the fame and recognition, it doesn't necessarily make you happy.

Bobby still shops in the Castle Market regularly. He seems to buy lots of eggs - jumbos.
Can't help but say he's looking forlorn these days. He's been a bit reserved since Marti Caine died. It hit him really hard.

I saw Bobby Knutt die on his feet - twice - with his after-dinner cabaret routine. No wonder really - he wasn't funny. If you are pulling the racist, sexist 70s club turn routine, you really ought to check your audience first!

In 1967 I was in hospital with bobby's nephew his name was Lee Platts ,I recall his wife Donna having an accident (burns to face)I may be wrong but it was a long time ago.Bobby used to come & see Lee sometimes I remember his curly hair.I was 10 at the time so forgive me if I have got anything wrong.I have not heard or seen anything from Lee since xmas 1967,although my brother saw him years ago & asked him how I was doing. He was a good lad we had some laughs in the King Edwards 7th hospital,Bob Monkhouse came to see us on my birthday,I can still recall his blue pinned stripe suit & sunglasses,he looked as cool as ever.anyway if anyone hears from Lee let me know it would be great to hear how he is doing after all these years.cheers

I worked for BT some years ago and had the pleasure of repairing Bobbys phone line. This i did and on completion Bobby asked me if I would prune the rose bushes growing up the wall of his cottage at Stannington, expecting some extra remuniration i pruned the said bushes and was told that the next time he played at the Dial House he would buy me a whisky,I go to the Dial every weekend and 5yrs later am still waiting for the drink.

Bobby was at St Leonards church at a wedding a few years ago which is in Longley.
I'm not sure if it was his own wedding or someone elses.
I will have to think about this one and get back.
UPDATE: I remember Nicholas Parsons also being there and think it was one of his models from sale of the century ,local lass got married there.
Could be wrong though.

Bobby Knutt is about as funny as typhoid. I recall his achingly-unfunny "mutter mutter, jabber jabber" routine, and an appalling record he made about "Following Sheffield United". As a Blade myself, I found the sublimely fatuous record deeply annoying. I also remember him knocking me sideways [no apology, of course] on West Street one afternoon as he bolted out of a gym like an angry Rhino. What a charmless, talentless oaf he really is!

He certainly didn't have a tash when I knew him, if it is the same guy, not many do at five!! He appeared in Scarborough last year at the Futerist Theatre in his own show, so he is still in business.
Whatever the pros and cons, he has certainly made a bob or two in his show bis career.

I actually got the chance to have a chat to "Knutty" this summer at the Spa in Scarborough, he is a fat little so and so now, he was in the summer show at the Spa all season and stayed at his caravan at Hawsker near Whitby while on the show as it was easy to comute from there.
He is no different than I remember him when on the Christmas panto at the Crucible a million years ago, and I dont think the act has changed much either!

my abiding memory of Bobby Knutt is of being a 6 year old, my mum and dad were steward and stewardess of a Sheffield WMC, and we lived in the flat above. One Saturday evening the door to the flat opened and in walked bobby, with his pipe, and said "ayup kids, yer fatha says ah can watch misen on't telly, and you three 'ad better be quiet cos yer mam says if yer not I can gi yer all a skutch!!"
he sat there smoking his pipe and chuckling to himself on the marti caine variety show, while we 3 kids sat in total awestruck silence. He was a friendly and avuncular bloke, and after the programme patted us all on the head and said seeya later kids...
then went downstairs and did a typical 70's club comic turn, ho hum......

Bobby Knutt was the voice over for Tetley Tea after Brian Glover sadly passed away, Brians wife asked Bobby to take over from him. Because they were good friends, he also did the Stones adverts, John Smiths and a couple of others that i can't rememeber now.

Bobby had a stroke about four years ago, and had to reduce his work load, and stop working 7 nights a week, he now works mainly in the caribbean on cruise ships for Cunard and P and O, he moved with Donna to a Bungalow in Elsecar, they are still married.

In total Bobby owned three Gyms in sheffield, the first being Intashape on west st. where Varsity now stands.

Yes he can be a grumpy old fart sometimes. But can't we all. Just cos he supposed to be a celebrity, dosn't mean he dosn't have bad days. but i suppose after the 40th person of the day saying tell us a joke knutty, we would all get a bit ****** off.

I have met quite a few celebs who are complete a***holes 24-7.

And he wasn't always funny. But even he will admit to that.

Appeared in Coronation Street, Emmerdale, Heartbeat, The Bill, Price of Coal film by Barry Hines(KES writer). and many more telelvision programmes. as well as doing Pantomime at the crucible and lyceum for 15 years.

And also worked for numerous charities in the south yorkshire area, mainly for the children's hospital and weston park.

Appeared at three Royal Variety performances in front of the Queen.

Worked with Tom Jones, Bob Monkhouse, Lenny Henry, Hale and Pace, Jim Davidson, Cannon and Ball, Terry Wogan, Les Dawson, Shirley Bassey, just to name a few.

He was the after dinner speaker at the Mayoral banquet that I attended last year. I have to say, as far as after dinner speakers go, he was quite entertaining. A room full of 200 politicians and their partners isn't the easiest of audiences...

Robert Wass (Bobby Knutt) went to Abbeydale Boys Grammar School on Springfield Rd.
He lived then at the bottom of Cemetery Rd near to London Rd.. This was late 50s early 60s.
He was a year older than me and a bit "cocky" at school.
He was also a bit on the small side then but "bulked " up with weight training as he got older.

Last saw him at Bridlington about 12 years ago but his act didn't travel well and he was getting a bit maudlin.

I remember Bobby Knutt and Paul Shane as top acts who filled the clubs by 1830 on a Saturday night, so they must have had something. I myself thought they were brilliant. I'll never forget fist seeing Shaney at the Dail House, doing his inpression of Charles Laughton-as Quasimodo, singing My Way. Sheer brilliance!!

The pantomime is Cinderalla at the Lyceum starting mid-December.
It has cast including Bobby Knutt, several others of indiscriminate fame and the nearly-ran Bob the Builder of Joseph fame (the guy from Rotherham, McVeigh I believe).
I only know all this from a poster in the city centre, I'm not a fan, just happened to be standing alongside the poster long enough to read it!

We took our sons to a pantomime with Bobby Knutt in the 1980's and they went on the stage as kids do, telling Bobby Knutt that all they had for Christmas was a bag 'o marbles. The audience looked at the red-faced parents cringing in their seats wondering why they'd spent a fortune on electronic wizardry just to face the embarrassment of their kids telling half of Sheffield that their parents are tight! My husband has never forgiven Bobby Knutt.
All our sons can remember about Bobby Knutt was that he had "big squashy hands like shovels".

"The crowd, they all shouted bullocks" it was about a bull fight apparantly. I dont know if my parents still own it, but they never chuck owt away.

Not sure what the rude word was but I'm amazed at the number of bad messages on here about him. I know comedy's a subjective thing and we all have different tastes, but the guy made a great living from doing stand - up in probably the 3rd hardest area in the UK. (That's hard as in difficult to please the audience) Glasgow and Newcastle clubs were the worst, but South Yorkshire must be next and Bobby Knutt made audiences laugh night after night, if he hadn't done he wouldn't have got the bookings. If you've never been out on stage in front of 200 people and tried to make them laugh you've no idea what inner fear is.
Perhaps the "local legend" is a bit OTT but I suppose it depends on how you define legend.

Bobby Nutts was performing on the PO cruise liner on the transatlantic run to the caribbean (2nd Nov 07 - 16th Nov 07). He mentioned his home town of Sheffield on a number of occasions. Didn't realise that he was married to former British athlete Donna Hartley. She was also giving talks on her life and keep fit but it hasn't worked on Bobby (I know he's in his sixities) but he could do with loosing a few inches around the midrift.

Don't think anyone's mentioned it, but Bobby's finest hour was as miner "Sid Storey" in the 1977 play "Price Of Coal". The play was a classic Barry Hines/Ken Loach (see "Kes") production and was absolute genius. A pity it seems to have been totally forgotten. It also starred Duggie Brown, but many of the actors were "amateurs" - miners and their families. This helped give it a sort-documentary-fly-on-the-wall feel. The play was in two parts - first was a royal visit, second was a disaster at the pit. BTW it was filmed at Thorpe Hesley Colliery (manriding shafts for Smithywood).

For more info have a look on britmovie.co.uk (put in "price of coal")

Last time I saw Bobby Knutt, he was shopping at the Asda in Handsworth where i work, and I had to show him where something was, without actually saying "you're Bobby knutt aren't you?"You just have to treat local celebs as any other customer. The other time when I saw him I was shopping in Morrisons with my mum, and he noticed that we were wondering if it was him, so he came and had a laugh and joke about it

I knew him when I was a kid. He and Donna were the best friends of my best friends parents (sorry thats a bit 'my cat peed up your alley'!). At the time I had no idea he had any kind of fame (even my mate didnt boast of it!). He used to give us stick as we were typical teenagers. I dunno how they knew each other but my mates mum was a former body builder so I figure through Donna. Donna's fags in fact were the ones that got me hooked. My mate had a little cupboard in the kitchen his parents left mini Mars bars and sweets in. For some mad reason the B&H Gold Donna would leave behind would always end up in there - and we would of course lift a few. I think Bobby was in an MGB owners club with said mates dad too. Probably 2000 since I saw him though

Some very harsh comments, re a once popular local celeb, yes his act may now be dated but so are the long forgotten, Hale and Pace, Cannon and Ball, Jimmy Tarbuck etc. People your living in the past. Like many of us Bobby has aged, he has been there and done it. Maybe some of the comments here are the subject of envy, as we have not nor were we capable of being in the business.

I'm reading Bobby Knutts autobiography at the minute and I'm really enjoying it...some funny stuff went on back in the goold old days lol. He was certainly a jack the lad! I hope he's going to be appearing in the next panto...we missed him this year :( although it must be hard work, especially for someone his age, doing panto every day, twice a day for over a month. My nan lives in the house that marti cane used to live in apparently (or the house that her nan lived in-not sure which) and he used to visit a house just down our street, in Shiregreen to do weight lifting in this blokes garage. I went to his son's last night drama party in York many years ago. His son and Bobby's original wife were really nice people as I met Bobby's sons original mother later. Fun night for all. We all got drunk by an open fire, in a mansion drama training school 'til 4 in the morning. It was like some lost footage from Withnail and I. Can you remember Chris? We used love his shows when he did the WMC scene. The last time I saw him was at The Crucible in the panto Mother Goose, years ago.
