View Full Version : Top Gear - 30/07/06 simondjuk 31-07-2006, 07:27 Did anyone else see last nights episode of Top Gear? I thought it was one of the funniest, especially the vans. Becky2006 31-07-2006, 07:29 my boyfriend made me watch it which i didnt want to do but then it did make me laugh with how silly they are Tricky 31-07-2006, 07:35 The scene where James May was trying to tailgate the car in front but couldn't catch up with it, made me laugh so hard I nearly lost control of my bladder. Cardboard 31-07-2006, 12:45 My girflriend is soooo not into cars, but even she watches it with me coz it is really funny! Did yoou see a couple of weeks back when they set their neighbours caravan alight (or their awning at least), let alone there own?! Now that was good tele!:D simondjuk 31-07-2006, 13:25 The two best bits last night were: 1: when they had to change the van doors and JC gaffer taped his up - then it fell off 2: When 'tippex teeth' (as he was called last night) attempted to 'flick' his van round that corner - and hilariously failed Shiesh 31-07-2006, 13:27 I love top gear - did you know you can watch the episodes on their website!!! So if you missed it - take a look!! Top Gear Website (http://www.bbc.co.uk/topgear/) Cyclone 31-07-2006, 13:37 Maybe I've missed the point, but it used to be about cars and now it's more about how 3 idiots can act like backsides in clearly staged stunts. NEKRO138 31-07-2006, 13:55 I like it, apart from Jeremy Clarkson. That man is an arse. johnbradley 31-07-2006, 13:59 top gear rules! i missed it yesterday but watched it on the net. and clarkson is most definately a pr!ck of the highest order. but i still like him, and find him funny. do i need help? jossyboy 31-07-2006, 20:07 The scene where James May was trying to tailgate the car in front but couldn't catch up with it, made me laugh so hard I nearly lost control of my bladder. hhmmm, i know how you feel. I'd had a beer beforehand and was dying for a pss most of the way through. No ad breaks though, damn BBC Sultana 31-07-2006, 20:25 Top Gear is the only programme about cars that I will watch, and I know some of it is staged - but it is still funny, Alex C. 31-07-2006, 21:45 Exactly, its not just a programme about cars, its an entertaining show - the vans were great yesterday - even better, before the world cup was the amphibious cars challenge :) Shazbat 01-08-2006, 11:43 Top Gear rules :D stackmonkey 01-08-2006, 12:37 The two best bits last night were: 2: When 'tippex teeth' (as he was called last night) attempted to 'flick' his van round that corner - and hilariously failed A setup, I'm afraid (he was wearing a full race harness after the flip) but still v funny. I thought it was going to flip even without the blatant 'encouragement'. I still want to see the 'best of' episodes over the next couple of weeks or so. AJ sheffield 01-08-2006, 16:36 Maybe I've missed the point, but it used to be about cars and now it's more about how 3 idiots can act like backsides in clearly staged stunts. Exactly...3 idiots...one of them the master. Jeremy Clarkson uses this programme simply for his own ego flexing. Stupid camera angles and lighting, hardly anything about the cars anymore. Bring back Noel Edmonds. Cardboard 02-08-2006, 07:53 Exactly...3 idiots...one of them the master. Jeremy Clarkson uses this programme simply for his own ego flexing. Stupid camera angles and lighting, hardly anything about the cars anymore. Bring back Noel Edmonds. This isn't a go at you AJ, but at the end of the day, if someone doesn't like it.....don't watch it. simondjuk 02-08-2006, 08:13 This isn't a go at you AJ, but at the end of the day, if someone doesn't like it.....don't watch it. Exactly - thats why we have a on/off button and a selection of other channels. Cyclone 02-08-2006, 08:17 My problem is that I used to like it. It used to be mainly about cars. It's only this latest series where apparently they need to spend time acting like a bunch of middle aged hooligans cross bred with brainless sea slugs. If they could get back to just hooning some flash cars around a circuit, doing the occasional comparison of family hatchbacks and talking about the latest releases of cars, then i'd be perfectly happy. I have no interest, nor need to see how someone can stage being a moron with a caravan, it's not entertainment and it's not about cars. Tricky 02-08-2006, 09:06 it's not entertainment and it's not about cars. How can you say it's not entertainment? This whole thread is about how entertaining it is. My only quibble is the obsession with supercars; I'd be happier seeing a head-to-head between a Cleo and a Corsa as I would be between a Ferrari and a 911. 4U2NV 02-08-2006, 13:36 My only quibble is the obsession with supercars; I'd be happier seeing a head-to-head between a Cleo and a Corsa as I would be between a Ferrari and a 911. Though supercars are appealing to the eye they are out of reach to the majority and 'normal' cars are better to discuss. like the suzuki liana with the stig :headbang: Cardboard 02-08-2006, 13:38 who is the stig anyways? I heard a rumour that it was Damon Hill, but then he came on the show I think and proved otherwise (since his laptop was better than the stigs i think) 4U2NV 02-08-2006, 13:41 who is the stig anyways? I heard a rumour that it was Damon Hill, but then he came on the show I think and proved otherwise (since his laptop was better than the stigs i think) Nobody knows we just know him as the stig :hihi: NatalieSheff 02-08-2006, 13:43 Did anyone else see last nights episode of Top Gear? I thought it was one of the funniest, especially the vans. Love TG but glad its end of season as i think they have begun to clutch at straws and go down hill a little. It never used to be a comedy thing or silly races it was all about ENGINES and FAST super cars which was ace NatalieSheff 02-08-2006, 13:44 Nobody knows we just know him as the stig :hihi:i think its him off fifth gear Cardboard 02-08-2006, 13:46 i think its him off fifth gear its gotta be someone small (like Damon Hill) coz the stig seams to be a small fella NatalieSheff 02-08-2006, 13:47 its my dad:o Cardboard 02-08-2006, 13:48 its my dad:o and whats he more commonly known as? ;) NatalieSheff 02-08-2006, 13:50 Austin Powers!!!! International man of mystery!! Hehe! seriously though does noone else think its fifth gear man? hes not the tallest in the world. Think they cant say its him cos he works for the other channel but hes bad ass driver! Cardboard 02-08-2006, 13:51 Ive just had a thought - it could even be Richard Hammond?! Macca 02-08-2006, 13:52 The Stig (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Stig) Tony 02-08-2006, 13:55 The original Stig was Perry McCarthy, ex GT, F1, F3, BTCC... etc. I've no idea who the new one is. There's a rumour that it's either Mansell or Hill. Well it ain't Mansell because he's too fat and Hill's too slow these days, so I can't see it being either. I'd be happier seeing a head-to-head between a Cleo and a Corsa as I would be between a Ferrari and a 911. Please wake me up when it's finished then. :shakes: xircon 02-08-2006, 13:57 There is more than one Stig, one of them is called Russ Swift (my mate did the lights for one of their roadshow tours) sophiec1979 02-08-2006, 13:58 i watched the repeat of top gear last night whilst eating my tea.....i nearly choked on a chickpea! i think its funny and their puerile boyish humour amuses me- i think i also have a little crush on the boy hammond- which is just very wrong, i know. sophie x Cyclone 02-08-2006, 13:59 It's been confirmed that the stig in black was damon hill, but it's now some rally driver (no idea who). Some people would claim that big brother is entertainment, it doesn't mean I have to agree with them. Tony 02-08-2006, 14:01 The new one is too consistent for it to be too many different drivers, though there may be the occasional replacement. I just can't see it being Russ Swift. He's busy with his own stuff and he's not the right build, and it's just not his thing - he's not a racing driver. He may have been winding your mate up. ;) Cyclone 02-08-2006, 14:01 Austin Powers!!!! International man of mystery!! Hehe! seriously though does noone else think its fifth gear man? hes not the tallest in the world. Think they cant say its him cos he works for the other channel but hes bad ass driver! you mean Tiff Needel? Jeremey Clarkson hates him, so it's very very unlikely. Tricky 02-08-2006, 14:32 The original Stig was Perry McCarthy, ex GT, F1, F3, BTCC... etc. I've no idea who the new one is. There's a rumour that it's either Mansell or Hill. Well it ain't Mansell because he's too fat and Hill's too slow these days, so I can't see it being either. I always assumed it was an Alan McNish type: small, lots of experience of different types of car. Please wake me up when it's finished then. :shakes: Isn't that about the quality of the presenting though? The reason I knew that the Noble was going really fast was because Richard Hammond was saying "Wow! look how fast that is" during commentary. As it was, we found out it was quicker than a Zonda but not as fast as a 911; but was it quicker than an Astra 1.4L? We shall never know. simondjuk 02-08-2006, 14:38 I always assumed it was an Alan McNish type: small, lots of experience of different types of car. I think we can assume it is - lol :D AJ sheffield 02-08-2006, 14:45 Exactly - thats why we have a on/off button and a selection of other channels. Problem is I like cars. What I dont like is how arty it all gets with camera angles that actually destroy any chance of seeing the car properly. I could kill Clarkson and his little arsehole mates with a wheel brace and sit back down for my tea without blinking, maybe then we could see cars. Tony 02-08-2006, 14:48 I always assumed it was an Alan McNish type: small, lots of experience of different types of car. I made a call and it seems that the favourite for the current Stig is a combination of Julian Bailey with Ben Collins standing in depending on race commitments. Julian Bailey would fit the Stigs build nicely. NatalieSheff 02-08-2006, 14:52 whens new series? september? hope they get back to basics Tricky 02-08-2006, 15:00 I made a call and it seems that the favourite for the current Stig is a combination of Julian Bailey with Ben Collins standing in depending on race commitments. Julian Bailey would fit the Stigs build nicely. I could well believe Julian Bailey, though Ben Collins would seem a bit too big, but then I suppose they could have a Julian Bailey sized stand-in for some shots. Tony 02-08-2006, 15:19 You couldn't tell the difference from outside the car or in the car from the back and they will no doubt have plenty of filler shots on file to piece together if Collins is standing in every now and again. I'm with you - Bailey seems to fit the bill. Cyclone 02-08-2006, 15:20 top gear seems to be dumbing down to compete more on a level with the complete trash that sky one show as a car show. Tony 02-08-2006, 15:23 Maybe so, but seeing Clarkson in a 911 GT3 RS stuffing Luca Badoa in a 360 CS was sublime :D It makes you want to get the Athena posters out again. Tricky 02-08-2006, 15:32 top gear seems to be dumbing down to compete more on a level with the complete trash that sky one show as a car show. I think it's becoming (dumbing down if you prefer) a show that is gaining viewers rapidly, especially female ones. Mrs Tricky was telling me about how she and 5 girlfriends were talking about how funny the previous nights Top Gear was. That would never have happened in the previous era. Cyclone 02-08-2006, 17:03 and that's not what it's supposed to be. The BBC are supposed to produce quality programming that fills a particular niche, not try to make every program appeal the masses. It's supposed to be about cars, and only petrol heads should like it. rad 02-08-2006, 19:03 Not really seen much of Fifth Gear, but isn;t that basically the old Top Gear on a different channel? Tony 02-08-2006, 20:02 Fifth Gear is well up there for the dullest program on TV. As you say it's the old Top Gear. The JC New Top Gear isn't for everyone but most episodes keep me amused for an hour even if JC has a pathological hate of Porches and an almost messianic love of Ferrari ;) You can keep Hammond though. Cyclone 03-08-2006, 06:33 The one on sky one though (I've blanked the name from my memory, somthing stupid like vroom vroom). That is so bad it's not actually watchable, and topgear seems to be chasing it into the gutter of trash tv. alchresearch 04-08-2006, 20:14 I hope next series they drop The Stig's in car entertainment while he put a car round the track. It was amusing once or twice but the language tapes are just irritating. coopster1974 06-08-2006, 17:45 Problem is I like cars.
