View Full Version : Sky TV vs Telewest Cable
FairyNormal 26-06-2004, 21:18 We currently have Telewest Cable digital TV and are considering swopping to sky and wonder what you good folks think?
We have everything through TW, braodband, TV and phone. Phone and broadband are fine but the TV has endless problems. It freezes, we lose the picture and I am just sick of calling them with problems.
We can get Sky for the same price and we get more channels. There is also the interactive services. Are they expensive to use and what kind of things do you have to pay for? It worries me a bit that the set top box has to be permanently connected to a phone line.
Any opinions/feed back would be gratefully received.
Thanks
we swapped to sky last year....the service is ok, no probs with phone line, sometimes have the odd hiccup with pic freezing, but nothing to stress about. You just get more channels. we pay 40 quid for the full package of channels.....(and theres still never anything to watch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)
sue:D :D :D
Telewest is reliant on living in a certain area to be able to get it, whereas Sky is available to everybody that wants and can afford it.
Therefore Sky is better IMO.
Although having said that, I wish I could get Telewest 512k Broadband, it's about half the cost of Pipex that I'm paying for at the moment.

For the 512k its been upgraded free to 750k, but bear in mind its £25 if you subscribe to another Telewest service such as TV or phone packages or its £27.99 if no other Telewest service taken.
Unless you go for the 256k service £17.99 or £19.99 if you dont subscribe to another Telewest service.
somertswrong 27-06-2004, 12:01 ive stuck with sky cos i've had no hassle with them....bit pricey though

Even at £27.99 it's still just short of 20 quid a month cheaper than Pipex.
We can't get any broadband other than the Pipex we've got though round here, and believe me I've tried them all, BT, AOhell, Freeserve, Bulldog, the lot.
ToryCynic 27-06-2004, 16:50 I know somone that has Virgin Broadband - but Virgin as an ISP - they have there fingers stuck in too many pies. And they're cheap, but naff.
mr craig 27-06-2004, 17:04 I'd say go with Sky. From what i've seen its a lot easier and quicker to use than cable (which was painfully slow). The only problem i've had with Sky is the occasional picture break up,but i think that might be more down to me using a comunal (sp?) dish rather than Sky itself.
Lickable 28-06-2004, 09:26 I have Sky at
£19.50 p/m, Pipex 512 at 23.44ish a month and BT at 16.50, including evenings and weekends!
A total of £59.44
---------------------------------------
I used to have telewest at
Talk Unlimited £25, Telewest supreme at £25.50 and 512 at £25
A total of £75.50
---------------------------------------
The only thing that made telewest better was the little prieview of the channel on the menu screen. :D
neeeeeeeeeek 28-06-2004, 10:16 Telewests talk unlimited is any time, they also have a evening and weekned service thats only 7 quid.. I am with telewest and have had no problems, reseat the card in the telewest box if you keep getting picture problems... might help!!
Lickable 28-06-2004, 10:43 Thats only £7 with a £10 rental!!! = £17!
And... The supreme has less channels than Sky.
I must admit, i would take broadband with telewest again... that is if it provided the service in my area!

That's just to be able to access the interactive content (eg: voting to evict someone on E4) - if you don't use that you don't need it plugged in.
My mum has sky and has never had the phone line plugged in.
Craig
Get sky, with a sky+ box, be amazed :D
Lickable 28-06-2004, 13:19 The new sky contract states that the phone line has to be connected to the phone line 24/7 or a £150 fine will be charged.

Didn't know that!! (rushes off to check contract!)
We have decided to go with Sky despite Telewest offering it us free for 2 months or an upgrade for the same money for 6 months. We are always re-booting our Telewest box, cleaning the card etc but because we live almost next door to the main box on the street, the signal is often too strong etc. It's a pain in the a***!
SilentStatic 28-06-2004, 19:19 Sky interactive has been very helpful during Wimbledon - you can choose between five courts, eg in case you'd rather watch Russian teenagers instead of Rusedski

So do you have to pay via your phone bill to access stuff like that? That's what worries me a bit that we will run up a huge phone bill using those kind of services.

Nah, you only pay for Pay Per View stuff like films and sports events on Sky.
