I just bought a USB card reader/writer. It did not come with any driver CD-rom. My OS is Win98. (I don't think it's Win98 SE.) The component's packaging said it's compatible with Win98/98Se/ME/2000/XP.

Yet, it does not work... why ? When I pulled it in, a list of components flagged up, and there isn't any that says "USB component" or whatever.

Do I d/l a generic card reader, or... ?

Visit the manufacturer's website and look for a driver there.

I think you need a patch for early Win98 to be able to use USB? Have a look around microsoft.com for USB and Win 98 support.

I got a "mini" CD with the reader I bought (about 4-5 months ago) from Maplin:).

As hotphil said, try the manufacturer's website:thumbsup:

Update. It wasn't a labelled product. So no manufacturing name on the packaging at all. All it said is "33 in 1 card reader/writer". "Hi-speed USB 2.0".

I did found a downloadable driver from the Maplin's website. However, I realised that it may not be working properly still because my USB add-on card itself is not working properly.

This is one long torture. I only wanted to retrieve my formatted photos from the CF card. Now I can't even do that.

The motherboard originally has USB 1.1, I think. The add-on USB 2.0 card was from a computer fair, and I don't think it came with any drivers. So, what next ?

Shall I change my OS all for retrieving this kind of lost data ? I don't even have a copy of another OS ! *sigh* Out of desperation, I bought this card reader for 20 squid as well, which I know is way overpriced for what it is, and now I can't even do what I set out to do. Grrr.....

*shake fists*

You can get your photos printed from the CF card, and you may even be able to get them burnt to CDR media, - I think some photo processors do this.

I'm not sure that you do need special drivers for your PCI/USB card but if your motherboard only supports USB 1.1 you'll need updated mobo drivers for USB 2 support. With Win98/SE you do need drivers for anything you plug into your USB card, and Win98SE is generally better supported than Win98.

Are there any USB ports on the back of the PC and if there are do you have any USB controllers showing in Device Manager ? [My Computer - Right Click - Properties-Device Manager]

...and BTW the 'General' tab on Sytem Properties dialog will show whether you have Win98 or Win98 Second Edition :)

Long story. Reasons found in this thread. This is becoming a pain in the bum. http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=129598

Ah... so I have to flash the m/board again. I've done this in the past. I thought that the drivers would be from the Win98 OS ? It was an Asus board. I will check this option again. Cos I recall having to flash it for the CPU that I bought.

Yes. 1.
It currently say:
"NEC PCI to USB Open Host Controller." x 2

NB: "USB Root Hub" x 2 (???)
"USB Printing Suport"

From the 'starter kit' manual. It mentioned that I should have :
"NEC PCI to USB EnhancedHost Controller"

Where do I get this from ?? I looked on the NEC list and it's not there. Not in the standard Win98 anyhow. Unless, this came in the Win98SE.

I just double-checked the OS version as you mentioned. It is Win98 then. I was a bit confused over the Win98 OS when it came out at that time. I know there were patches and upgrades. I think mine is Win98 'Plus'. So I wasn't entirely sure what was Win98 'SE', but now I know. Thanks ! :)

See where you're coming from now :)

Your PC is talking to the camera OK but not to the card reader so all you need really is a Win98 driver for the card reader [which should work OK even if you only have USB 1.1]

If the packaging for the reader claims it works with Win98 it should be supplied with a driver CD or a URL where you can download drivers from. If you bought it from Maplins they should be able to help you...if not you want your money back.

Upgrading to USB 2 just requires some drivers from the Asus website...but you'll need to know the model number of your motherboard [and if it's a really old model they may not have bothered to write any :( ]
