I am hoping to start a world-reknowned hamster appreciation society, where we can swap tips and views about this extraordinarily fascinating breed of mammal.

Furry little buggers in the nicest possible way, you understand.

Agent Pipsqueak is coming along nicely, and I feel his progress to be of vital importance to fellow hamster lovers.

What do you think?

Come on - cats and dogs are rubbish: hamsters are in.

Remember, you heard it here first.

I would have thought there is already something of that nature about. I myself do not own any Hamsters but my friend is Hamster mad.

Just leading off topic slightly, but keeping within the furry animal theme. Someone in the peace gardens today had a rabbit in a rabbit carry bag and had the thing on a lead. I found this first of all amusing, then kind of cute, then a bit strange. Does anyone else have a lead for their rabbit?

The thing I love about hamsters is you can hold them in one hand, cover their head with the other (not in a suffocating manner) and they quite happily nod off.

And I love how they store their food in their mouths

But can you train a hamster to fetch your slippers, or go out and catch your pigeon stew ingredients?

Our dog and cats have intimated that they would dearly like to meet Agent Pipsqueak and his compatriots.

Saturday night behind the Roxy.

There was the time when i was curious about how much a hamster could get in it's pouches. So, i'm in my old house with ,my fellow housemates hamster. I decided to put him in the bag of hamster food. My Christ he packed tonnes of food in there. However the next day I found him dead. I had to tell my housemate that he was dead. I feel guilty that i never told her that it might have been my fault. i couldn't really say 'I fed your hamster to death, but it had an amazing pouch capacity' So i just let her believe that it was natural causes.

I took the little guy to endcliffe park, and made him a nice grave, leaving a candle on top to burn through the night. Still i feel a bit bad though.

Er, the rules of taxidermy Andy clearly state.......

Rule #75. Wait until the little fella is dead before you stuff it.

I once put our Hamuel in his food bag to see how much he would take... his cheeks were so full he couldn't fit down his tunnels in his cage, so i let him on the floor and he went and hid most of it behind the tv in the corner.

This week he has discovered the delights of dandelions, so he isn't so interested in he dry food!

Our ex hamster, dear old Tiddles, was very fond of chickweed.

I have had about 5 hamsters , but once my 'rents split up it ws a bit of a hassle, trying to persuade my mum to look after them while I wasn't there.

They are very fun, but the thing I HATED was those bloody Rotostak cages - had to wash it up and dry it twice a week, took ages, and so many different parts.

I went into Pets @ Home down the road the other day and fell in love with this little baby cream coloured one, but seeing as we already have 4 cats and 3 ferrets, I decided against it. Especially as it's unlikely I'd be able to take it to Uni.

Actually that's a point, do you think halls of residence would let you?

Rosie

yep, it was pain in the neck keeping them clean.
My tubes had to have little ladders in them so the russians could get up. They were'nt big enough to haul themselves up like the golden ones

I love those Robrovsky's hamsters! ABsolutely gorgeous, but tiny, and have a short life span so I don't think I could cope :(

The thing with hamsters is they spend their entire life trying to escape!

Agent Pipsqueak plays nicely on our coffee table in the evenings. He snacks on bits of cream crackers and goes in and out of the hamster tube/piping stuff that we bought. He occasionally goes in the ball, but prefers this.

Oh dear I wish you hadn't started this debate....I'll end up going and buying a secret hamster because I miss them so much!

Sorry Rosie. I may have an open-day some time in the future so that people such as yourself can view Agent Pipsqueak.

He is coming along nicely.

Wow, look! A cage for gay hamsters!

Don't you just love the way they try and 'big-up' a hamster cage? This has got to be the best example I've seen: http://www.petplanet.co.uk/product.asp?dept_id=144&pf_id=1686

Our Hamuel isn't interested in escaping. We let him run round the living room floor, but after a few minutes he runs back up the ladder into his cage to make sure everything is as he left it and then he heads straight for his wheel

"featuring the lastest innovations in design and space efficiency. Safari's unique combination of wire side panels and plastic end panels offers both full ventilation and unobstructed viewing"

well, "a plastic base surrounded in wire mesh" just doesn't have the same ring to it.

maybe you could try those far-eastern import shops for such wonderfully translated items as a "hamster house giving spacious breathing for your pet's noble taste in sight-seeing"

OK i admit hamsters are cute, but from previous experiences i know i'm not a small pet kind of person. On top of the previous post, when i was 5 i had a hamster called snowytoes. I also has a big fluffy cat called Sacha. Now i thought they'd be friends cos they were both fluffy. Being a small child i woke up early one morning (6am) and decided to introduce them to each other. Needless to say the cat chomped the hamster right before my very eyes. I was a very upset child at that point. My brother still brings it up from time to time when he wants to blame me for something. So i learned to stick with larger mammals that i have less chances of hurting, such as cats.

No, the rotastak tubes tend to be smaller. Trying to fit them together might mean an escaping hammy!

Rotastak only fits rotastak, and its bleddy expensive too! If I was you, I'd get that silver space looking one....or the gay pink one :D

I got a few bits for my rotastak from ebay. They were real bargains and i ended up doubling the size of my original cage. My 2 hamsters are currently going through the battle of who is the king of the rotastak cage. Theres a lot of squeaking going on in there.

SYrians or dwarves? You do know it's very dangerous to keep syrians together...

Theyre russian dwarf. Supposedly theyre 'sociable' and the woman in the pet shop said they get miserable on their own so i got 2. Theyre OK with each other as long as theyre asleep in which case you genuinely would think there was a 2 headed fat hamster asleep in there.

How come they cost so much more than the syrians but you get so much less for your money (Unless you feed them well like i have - theyre almost as big as syrians now and theyre still growing - i do like to get what i paid for)

I had a golden hamster he was called Marmaduke, I also had a very large powerful black german shepherd called Brett. One day Brett had his nose pressed to the cage and little marmaduke saw the tip of one of his ears coming through the bars. Next thing I knew there was a squeal of pain from brett and he took off as though rocket propelled. For the rest of marmadukes life two years he could wander at will on the carpet and Brett would lie in the corner watching nervously. If Marmaduke went towards him Brett would get up and move out of his way which on a few occasions meant brett moved five or six times, what a coward but then hamster's do hurt when they bite.

They sure can bite. I once had my nose pierced all the way through by my hamster.

Ive got part of this and the rest of it is available on e-bay and some fairly decent prices.
Developed a recent thing for fish tanks cos they are safer since I have two cats.
Prefer gerbils to hamsters although I've got a roborovski and a syrian.
