View Full Version : What's the best advert on TV - past and present
simondjuk 28-07-2006, 10:02 My favorite is the one for that mobile phone where that man and woman are walking by that lake and the take a photo of a flower, insect lands on flower, fish eats insect, bear eats fish, eagle flys away with bear.
Its great :hihi:
NEKRO138 28-07-2006, 10:04 I like the drink driving one where that woman gets smashed into that desk. Brings a smile to my face every time. Also, look at the man's face afterwards. He has one of the most slappable faces ever. He looks like a sad fox.
The Guiness 'evolution' ad, particularly the 'extra cold' variant.
Best ad of all time - past and present?
Oh come on folks. There can be only one:
"It's grand to find a comfortable chair, when you're getting on a bit, or you've got athritis (sic).
My niece got this from Shackleton's you know. Shackleton's original high seat.
Never thought it'd be so easy to get in and out of.
First she sent for their brochure.
Then went to the showrooms.
They'd over a hundred chairs to choose from.
Shackleton's high seat chair.
It's lovely."
steve_sufc 28-07-2006, 10:38 You Buy One You Get One Free, I Said You Buy One You Get One Free. Call 0800 106107 Nooooooowwwwwwww.........

:cool::hihi: :hihi:
BasilRathbon 28-07-2006, 11:29 Whatever happened to Shackleton's High Seat Chairs?
Jabberwocky 28-07-2006, 11:32 Best ad of all time - past and present?

Shackletons high seat chairs...
Ohh you brought back so many nightmares.
purdyamos 28-07-2006, 12:23 Creature Comforts by Nick Park were the best. It totally backfired as an advertisment, though, 'cos nobody could remember if it was selling electricity or gas (in fact I think in surveys more people thought it was for the one it wasn't!)
My current fave is the Honda ad over 'the impossible dream', where the guy gets out of a caravan, onto a bike, into a car etc and ends up on a hot air balloon. There's something quite mad about it that just gets me. I wanna join in!
Oh, and that honda ad that went on for three minutes that was the continuous shot of components setting each other off in a line was bloody perfect.
(I'm not sponsored by honda, btw.)
BasilRathbon 28-07-2006, 12:23 The scary thing is I'm getting to the age now where I think I'd quite like a Shackleton's chair, and I'm only 38!
I like that car insurance the one with shelias wheels in:hihi: :hihi:
shorty558 28-07-2006, 12:47 Best adverts of all time have got to be the budweiser ones with the frogs and the lizzards. BUD - WEIS - ER!!!
Any advert that involves a transforming car dancing or ice skating does it for me.
I like the sheila's wheels music for some nutty reason and also I like the crunchy cornflakes one with the bloke riding the dog but my fave has to be the one with the bloke who coughs up the manky dog- the ad got banned though
simondjuk 28-07-2006, 12:55 I remember seeing some adverts a while back for a Ford Ka. There was one where a cat climbed onto the car and into the sunroof and the sunroof closed and chopped the cat in half.
The other was a pigeon sh***ing on the bonnet and the bonnet shot up and catapulted the pigeon.
Brilliant, why do they ban the best ones.
simondjuk 28-07-2006, 12:57 Best adverts of all time have got to be the budweiser ones with the frogs and the lizzards. BUD - WEIS - ER!!!
forgot about that one
how about the other Budweiser ad - Whasssuuupppp....
summer1955 28-07-2006, 13:12 the best one the mashed potato one with the aliens they peel them with their metal knifes then smash them all to bits. loved it, my late hubby loved it so much he called him self instant mash on the cb, but everyone called him mashy
Honda advert with the bloke singing
littlestarshine 28-07-2006, 14:22 hey pea.. remember the good old days on the farm and ur pod and the little pease u grew up with dont ya just miss em???
a mushy pea advert!
donuticus 28-07-2006, 14:56 Its the honda ad with the car parts set like domino rally.
No question.

what a piece of telly was better than the programs
I liked the one where the guy coughed up a dog, the dogs face was realy funny.
It got banned :(
I also liked the Marmite "blob" advert.
Same fate.
sheffdan 28-07-2006, 15:03 I like the Sprite ones! they think there getting a can of pop but they actually get the mythical creature....................I love that little guy! :hihi:
The Trojan Condoms internet advert with the sex olympics was pretty funny too, but I don't seem to be able to find a link to it at the moment.
Any advert that involves a transforming car dancing or ice skating does it for me.
Prefer the dancing/limbering up car to the ice skating car. Love the Smash robots, the KitKat ones were always good as well - my fave was the spoof of One Man and His Dog. And The Famous Grouse ads absolutely rock :hihi:
AtticusFinch 29-07-2006, 11:28 My favourite ad of recent times is this KFC one where the 999 staff are singing with their mouths full. I was gutted when it got banned.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gjup9SXhm0Q
I always find the bad ones easier to remember!
But the Peter Kay John Smiths ones were great, especially the one about the "wardrobe monsters". And VW and Guinness usually came up with some great ones too. Of course there's always the top cheesy classic "Shake 'n' Vac" with the 70s woman dancing round and that scary song! ;)
It has to be either John Smiths wardrobe mosters adverts or my favourite of all time. SPRITE that little monster is so cool. The one they did at the festival where he sits strumming a guitar looking sad is just brilliant. I'm suprised they haven't made sprite dolls or something, the merchandising would be worth loads.
At the moment, my three favourites are :
Honda - the fellow singing 'The Impossible Dream'.
Honda - the rather psychedelic 'Here's a song about hate'. :)
Dodge - the one with the panel of cute creatures being questioned about how the car makes them feel. And the last cutie that says 'It made me wet my pants'. :)
Wow...some adverts that made me remember the company. :)
eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeer the Lynx ad shown during the World Cup ?
I love the dancing/ice skating car, I also like the Walkers crisp ads.
sufc_tom 02-08-2006, 11:00 No competition.

Not sure what this was advertising (think it was lager) but I loved it when it was out!
Can't find the actual advert
Agent Gypo 02-08-2006, 14:10 Apple Mac - '1984'
Honda - sequence of objects rolling into each other to trigger a stereo
Guiness - take your pick, there are loads of great ones, especially Jonathan Glazers
Tango - orange bloke slapping someone in face
Pot Noodle - old 90's 'shaky cam' shot of bloke pouring boiling hot Pot Noodle over his face

It was for what used to be called Carling Black Label, hence the punchline at the end 'I bet he drinks Carling Black label'
Dewsnap06 02-08-2006, 14:33 The guniess adverts are al calss. everyone puts a smil on my face but the full length one, form wher they go into the pub and ordera drink and then go back in time all the way back to them tadpole type things is amazing and very well done.
EdnaKrabappe 02-08-2006, 14:36 It was for what used to be called Carling Black Label, hence the punchline at the end 'I bet he drinks Carling Black label'
Thanks Simon! thought it was but my memory is failing me somewhat... too much Carling black label? :suspect:
alchresearch 04-08-2006, 20:15 Did anyone see the Tango spoof of the Sony advert with all the coloured balls bouncing down the street? I only saw it once and it was hilarious!
Banjo Griner 04-08-2006, 20:18 I like the new Frosties advert.
*sarcasm* (did anyone catch Charlie Brooker the other week?)
yosser_huges 04-08-2006, 20:21 The "There gonna taste great" advert really winds me up, but its also funny in a strange sort of way.
Then theres the "BANG... and the grease is gone" The cilit bang adverts are soo cheesey, but hilarious at the same time.
But the best ad of all is this one from microsoft...

Because for some unknown reason the censors think kids will imitate the actions of the adverts, so the "concerned parent" brigade gets the adverts taken off air :loopy:
As for best adverts, some of the old ones were great, especially stuff like the old Green Cross Code ads in the late 70s starring David "Darth Vader" Prowse.
Those and the Smash ads starring those robots, for instant mashed potato.

Here it is, fantastic.

Have to agree with that, though I did love those sexy Cabury's flake ads.
