View Full Version : All change on Sheffield bus network
silverknight 25-06-2004, 09:15 Just read in the star (tues June 22) that a major change to First's Sheffield bus network is to take place with effect from July 25. Nothing appears on First's or the PTE's web site with only a month to go. For those who have not seen the news item the piece says that First and the PTE have had talks for the past year on the revised network plans which is phase one and is mainly affects North Sheffield services however it will have a knock on effect on all other routes in the city. Approx 50% of Sheffield routes are effect in this phase. Spokeperson from First Brandon Jones says ... " Passengers should be reassured that if a a bus went along a certain street, after the changes they will continue to have a service, although it may have a different number" it goes on to say that 48,500 leaflets will be delivered to homes in North Sheffield. All routes will carry information on the changes and drivers will be able to answer question. I read into this that we can expect that some routes will see cut backs in the level of service on some routes i.e current service every 15mins becomes 20 and every 20 mins becomes 30mins. The reason I say this is that in the news item it mentions that service on 93 to Meadowhall is to be replaced by service 86. Anyone had a leaflet or have inside information if you work for First or the PTE.
Yes, it does seem strange that First bus should put out a press release before the information is available. They are normally quite good at posting advance information on their website.
SYPTE never seem to publish timetable changes more than a few days before, so I wouldn't have expected to find it on their website!
I have filled in the 'contact us' form on the First website asking the question, I'll see if I get a reply.

Most buses carry 2 people all day - and one of them does the diving.
They need our support and we should extend supertram all over Sheffield - it is fantastic.

Don't expect them to get back to you in a hurry, they are shockingly bad at replying to correspondence.
silverknight 10-07-2004, 08:32 Just an update regarding the big bus service swap around of routes in Sheffield. The PTE timetable site NOW has some of the NEW timetables to view. Pocket guides will start to appear in outlets from the 14th July.
I'm still annoyed at the bus changes... Particularly those affecting Stannington, I mean WTF?! They take the most reliable service we've got, ie the 83 off us, and expect us to be content with the apalling 82 service and the as yet unproven 81/81a?!
Hopefully the 81s will be serving the real Stannington as well as Upper Malin Bridge and Lower Stannington estates.
dollydaydream 11-07-2004, 15:21 look on the bus for leaflets about changes i have had one just open your eyes and you will find them i did
silverknight 11-07-2004, 17:44 If you had read the early threads we published the details to this site before the leaflets appeared this week ie on Monday the 12th the PTE issued their leaflet (all operaters) while the First leaflet only came out on Friday. Some details of new timetables have started to appear on the PTE timetable finder site.Pocket timetable guides are due to start to appear from Wednesday ... not all will be available.
NotoriousBIG 11-07-2004, 22:01 Apparently, first mainline are changing the service in Norton Lees, where I live. Apparently they are taking the service off all together on the Hollythorpe rise route(14, 39 bus' ) and making people (old age pensioners by the way) walk to catch the 34 bus which is a different route completly and quite a walk to get too for pensioners...
When are first mainline going to take responsibility for their actions and stop ignoring the people that count, which are the people that use the service and keep it going....
Labour tell us to stop using your own car to get into town and use public transport.. well how can we if we don't have a decent publc transport system in place....
At the end of the day it's all to do with the green ("money")...
It's very interesting, asking the local MP about the bus service is sheffield... they say that First Mainline are a private company...
So why then are the government subsidising first mainline when it comes to the wages of the bus drivers.....
As you can probebly guess I don't like first mainline much, and thats because we don't get the service that we pay for in the slightest. I have to pay £1.10 to get into town.. and i have to hand over my hard earned money to some bus driver you cannot be bothered to say "thankyou"

The wages are not subsidised, learn the facts before you make false statements
NotoriousBIG 12-07-2004, 09:52 i'm a bus driver and i know where my wages are from!!!!
So I do know all the facts!!!

I believe service 1 is the replacement, going as current route 39 to Chancet Wood, then as current service 38 to Jordanthorpe, then as current route 59 to Meadowhall.

silverknight 17-07-2004, 19:47 If you think you my get lost in the city after the bus route swap around next weekend,I am pleased to report that FIRST have published a new edition of the BUS map and guide to Sheffield services. Now available at your local PTE office
I would've thought they'd at least postpone the bus changes for next weekend given that the buses won't be running from next week anyway cos of the strike... :loopy:
Does anyone know any further news about the proposed bus route changes by First which are scheduled to begin this coming Sunday the 25th of July?!
I know there was a thread about the changes either last week or the week before but I'm after updated news regarding the route changes as I can't find anything on First's web site.
Its all there at the right hand side click on route changes and then on sheffield.
but the sypte site is better as it has all the companies not just the first ones.
take care john in parson cross

silverknight 19-07-2004, 21:03 I have recently read that residents in several areas of Sheffield are fuming at the First bus route shake up due for introduction this weekend and have spoken to their local council rep.Council leader Jan Wilson is also not happy at the services provided in the City by Bus operaters and has asked for a Public Forum on the Subject to be held in September.watch This space as sparks will fly.

I'd like to know what muppet decided to withdraw Stannington's most "reliable" bus route, ie the 83?! :loopy:
Now we get the 81/81a and "improved" services from the 82 which apparently serves Bents Green/Ecclesall as normal, and apparently so do the 81s! Which is great for the Upper Malin Bridge and Lower Stannington residents but what about people such as myself and Duffman for instance who live right up beyond the Sportsman, the true Stanningtoners?
silverknight 19-07-2004, 22:25 What First have have done is that during early morning, evening service Monday to Saturday and all day Sunday your journey from Stannington village will do a trip around Hall Park Head estate to/from City.In plain talk the Stannington area has lost 2 buses an hour during these off peak periods.Looking at some of the revised timetables most areas are losing at least one/two buses per hour by First during this rejig of routes.Where we had a 10 minute service now becomes 15, 15 mins. becomes 20 and 20 mins becomes half hourly. I have not seen all the new timetables but I would guess that First are saving around 10 buses/drivers per hour under this New network. So with some simply maths 10 drivers @ £5 per hour multiply by 10 hour daytime service(0700 to 1700) = £500 per day saving in wages alone. It also means First can also making savings by not buying 10 NEW buses in the future. The only plus point I have come across is that some routes have gained a Late journey leaving City around 2330.
Plain Talker 20-07-2004, 05:36 I'll bet my last £5 that the 52 bus route doesn't get any cutbacks in its frequency!
Although... ( p-t ponders...)
Maybe the one or two buses an hour cut-back across the whole of the network might mean that there are more accessible buses freed up, to serve other routes, instead of just the "favoured few".

Imagine the uproar that would ensue if they made changes to probably THE most reliable service in Sheffield?! Especially from students, the majority of whom live around the Crookes/Broomhill area which the 52 primarily serves on its run from Heavygate Road through to Town?!
