They have a great underground system.

5 years or so ago I spent a few days wandering the city and then a few days exploring other parts of the country. Highlights (getting vague with time now) include Fado folk singing in many restaurants, LOTS of steps in some parts of the city including a nice walk up to the castle, and a day trip out by train to see the mountain views at Sintra. We also had a day at the Expo site and travelled there by underground - I'll echo the comments about the fanastic transport! There's also things like cable cars, funiculars and a damn long bridge to see :)

Oh and if do get out of the city, the roads and driving can be a little scary! There's some great rocky Atlantic coastline though (forgetting the obvious beaches).

Thanks for the advice. I really want to go to Sintra. I've looked it up on the internet and it looks beautiful.

A pal of mine in his 50's went to Lisbon and had the misfortune to suffer a theft at the hands of pickpockets on a bus. Three people in the gang and sleight of hand that rugby players would be proud of. I know it can happen anywhere but stay on-guard.

Lisbon is a beautiful city. A visit to see Sintra is a must. So is a sight-seeing tour which takes in the Monument of the Discoveries and The Tower of Belém.

Coming into land at Lisbon airport gives you a grand view of the city below - but if you are at all quesey about flying (and especially the landing part) then best not to look out of the window......it doesn't look possible to miss those rooftops below! :gag:
