My girlfriend's an architect, I'll ask her if she knows of any archives/resources to try and track the building down etc

Perhaps not the answer everyone was hoping for, but she suggests a trip down to the archives (http://www.sheffield.gov.uk/in-your-area/libraries/find/archives/sheffield-archives) and a lot of digging around. The archives aren't (yet) scanned and available online.
