As i've only ever rented privately before, I wondered what the fees are like with estate agents? Im trying to get my mum a house in shef/rham and Reeds Rains seem to have reasonable priced houses, but it doesnt say whether they charge for credit check.


Anyone had any experience? Which are the best agents to go with if i cant find one for her privately?

We rented via Reeds Rains, they charged an admin fee of about £140-150, as well as a deposit and first month's rent up front. Seemed pretty good to deal with although I suspect it depends on the individual agents. Once the contract is signed the local office has no dealings with you - there's some call centre in Manchester instead.

estate agents are a nitemare...they charge an extra 100 quid as well just to get you credit checked...day light robbery!

Is there a specific paper/evening which has private landlords advertising??

Just a word of warning if you do go the estate agent route, do not use Saxton Mee, we found them rude, unhelpful and very inefficient!
