View Full Version : Goodbye to the Cannon Hall Pub
Finally the Cannon Hall Pub is under demolition after years of dereliction. Although Im glad to see it go to stop all the druggies and numpties hanging around it dealing etc, Im also sad as I do remember it when it was a good place to go. During the hot summers families with children would sit out on the balcony drinking and eating and enjoying the great atmosphere.
Funny how quickly places change. First the flats went, then the ESSO petrol station flattened and now the Cannon. Hopefully, the space will be used to build or create something easy on the eye.
I heard that some accomodation will be built for the benefit of staff at the Northern General Hospital.
The idea is that staff who work at the NGH will live there, and so contribute to the local economy. At the moment, very few of the staff or patients live or spend in the Fir Vale or Page Hall locality, so the local economy is missing out quite a lot.
I'm always sorry to see old buildings go in that area, or anywhere else in Sheffield. Sadly, it's more profitable to the developer to knock down an existing building and build new than it is to redevelop an existing one.
Witness the scandal of the Firth Park Brushes building and its convenient arson attack :(
Accommodation for the NGH staff!? so more flats. Im sure theres enough space available within the NGH grounds for staff accommodation. Why dont they put some grass down and build a park area where people can sit and talk, It's big enough.
Since the other end of Fir Vale is now cut off by the school and medical centre, there isn't really any social area for adults with children.
I can understand why the school has been encased in wire fencing but to get from Earl Marshal Road to Firth Park Road you have to trek right round the block now, whereas before you could just use the path past the football pitches. Why not just leave the path open?
commie pig 23-06-2004, 11:56 Is the rumoured supermarket not a goer then? that's what I'd heard was going to go there.
Was a funnny old pub the Cannon Hall - I only ever went in its dying and decrepit years, but it was cheap, and they had a good pool table (even if we did fuse the lights in the entire building once by nudging the overhead light)
Internetowl 23-06-2004, 12:27 Longley College is going to cause real problems for the local resdients as it has no parking facilities - the local roads around there will be packed with students cars etc - a feast for the local chav / car thieves me thinks...
custardcream 23-06-2004, 14:23 bye bye.............

I heard it was going to be accomodation for NGH staff at that local meeting recently held at Fir Vale School...I think you know the one.
I'd be surprised if a supermarket started up there - there'd be nowhere to park cars!

You must be joking! They've built on just about every available space there! Anyone remember the big footy pitch in front of the clocktower many years ago?
All gone!
moominguru 23-06-2004, 16:29 I totally agree about the old brushes site. What a shame! I have seen the plans of the new building and it looks a bit of an eyesore. I think there should be some parking there when they've finished the building though.
Plain Talker 23-06-2004, 16:54 Oh, Mr PT will be extremely sad, at that news....
he often mentions his memories (mammaries? ) of going there of a weekend night, and seeing the topless go-go dancers that the Cannon Hall used to have performing there...
their bodies (bosoms particularly) were painted in wild ultraviolet designs, the dancers wiggling away to the sounds of Santana's "Soul Sacrifice"...
Can't imagine why it could be one of his all-time favourite songs from his mis-spent youth.....(coff!)

Yo Abdul, I'm not sure about this. I'm going for a job tomorrow with the fir vale forum, and I have to research a local news story. I phoned up the northern general comms department to ask about this, and they didn't know what I was talking about.
It's the site of the old cannon hall pub right, next to the friendly society or whatever it's called?
Does anyone else know what it's going to be?
Yo Tommy, look at the dates mate, it was in June last year and might be a tad out of date by now, but Abdul and Lestat will no doubt be able to give you some up to date news. That is unless they are after the same job :)

Drat! I was hoping to keep it a secret :suspect:
Seriously, I don't know anymore than what I've already said. When I do, I'll let you know.
Pretty sure it's nothing to do with us at the hospitals - although it might be a private development 'aimed' at hospital workers. Certainly not funded by us although we are looking at ways we can work with the Firvale Forum in the future.
Applegrim 16-02-2005, 17:54 I remember many years ago the Cannon Hall was a great pub that had groups on, just as many pubs did in those days, I remember sitting with Joe Cocker who sometimes sang with Jonnie Hawk and the Falcons, great memories of that time.
