Thought this might be an interesting referance guide, Hecate, if I ask you nicely would you make it "sticky"???

My reccomendations are:

Hobbycraft - Meadowhall Retail Park

Pasttimes - Woodseats Road

Wye Needlecraft - Bakewell

Thanks Viking :) .

I've just Googled Edwinstow and came up with these (http://www.edwinstowe.co.uk/pages/index.htm). Is the shop you mentioned one of those? I think a visit might be in order.

EDIT: Bugger. It looks like that webpage has frames so the link only goes to the front page. The page with the craft shop listing can be reached by clicking on 'arts and crafts'.

Just like to add a bit about the aforementioned Wye Needlecraft.

Several weeks ago (Probably months by now!) I ordered a chart as they hadn't got it in stock, I was assured delivery would be within 28 days and was quite happy with that. More than that time went by and no chart so I rang them up and quiried it, they said there was a problem with the supplier and that it should be with me in around two weeks, 2 days later it turned up, funny how a phone call got their bums into gear!

Thanks Becky B. Web of Wool is a good online shop. I added it to the shops section in the 'recommended knitting links' thread a little while ago, if I remember correctly. I'll go and check :) .

EDIT: Yes, it's there.

Whichcraft (http://www.whichcraft.info/) is a fab shop - it used to be in Broomhill but has moved to John Street, just off London Road near CCC Outdoors. Really helpful staff as well.

I like the stall on The Moor too - has loads of sewing bits, but also paper/card and beads and stuff.

I didn't think Whichcraft stocked wool, they never used to. Great for everything else though!

Think you are right, don't think they do. I know this is in the knitting group, but the thread title was about craft shops so I thought it was relevant anyway!

Hecate

Yes, this thread is for recommendations of craft shops in general. Recommendations for yarn shops are very welcome too, of course, and will be added to the shops section of the 'recommended links thread'.

I'll add a section for craft shops there too.

Pasttimes - Woodseats Road

Pastimes is on Chesterfield Road, almost opposite Kentucky Fried.

Unit 1, also on Chesterfield Rd, opp Carphone Warehouse, sells scrapbooking and cardmaking kits, stamps, stamp pads, scrapbooks, thin card and other odds and ends useful for cardmaking.

I've made this a sticky seeing as most craft people will ask about shops at one time or another!

Has anyone been into the ones in Hillsborough? There is one in the shopping centre itself and one opposite the park.

Wingham wool works (http://www.winghamwoolwork.co.uk/)

They supply people all over the country and are quite well known so we are lucky that we live in their locality (sorry Hecate, they do deliver though).

Wingham Wool Work is fab. They do a stunning range of fibre, and offer subscriptions to several fibre arts magazines at very reasonable prices).

Beansforyou was kind enough to pick up a load of stuff for me on her last visit, but I do need to pay a visit myself.

I'd heartily recommend Dunelm for fabric and needlework supplies. They're not so much a craft shop, more of a home-furnishing shop. However, their range of fabrics is massive - I picked up some very cheap calico and evenweave fabric last week, as well as some curtain lining and upholstery material that are destined to become another knitting needle case. They also do haberdashery stuff: scissors, needles, interfacing and the like.

I'm not sure if there is one in Sheffield, but if not there can't be one too far away.

I love Wimble Bees. That was one of the very first needlework shops I ever ordered from back in the very early 90s.

I'd also recommend Texere Yarns (http://www.texere.co.uk/index.html). Their thread variety bags (http://www.texere.co.uk/shades.php?reference=45) are excellent value (Mine arrived yesterday, plus a bag of the undyed ones (http://www.texere.co.uk/yarns.php?category=15&subcategory=1) so I can experiment with dyeing my own).

Their paper catalogue is excellent too. It comes complete with over a dozen sample cards of the different fibres they do.

The Mill Shop (http://www.texere.co.uk/Pages/ContactDetails.htm) in Bradford is open Mon-Fri 9-5.

I recommend Bee Inspired (http://www.beeinspired.co.uk/index.php). I visited the shop this morning and found it to be a little Aladdin's cave of creative goodness. The staff were very friendly, helpful, and clearly knew their way around embroidery, knitting and the like. It's particularly strong on the creative embroidery side; for example, they sell a good range of Texere variety bags and Oliver Twists threads.

As the shop is in Kettering, it's probably a little too far away for most to visit in person. However, they seem to be adding to their web site regularly.

A few more recommendations:

Art Supplies:
Discount Art (http://www.discountart.co.uk/)
Art Discount (http://www.artdiscount.co.uk/index.html)

Goldwork Supplies:
Janice Williams (http://www.ajs-it.co.uk/goldwork/supplies.htm) at the Goldwork Guild.
- You have to send off for a catalogue, but it's comprehensive and it's easy to find items which are difficult to find elsewhere.

Hecate
16-10-2006, 06:28
And a couple more:

Art Van Go (http://www.artvango.co.uk/index.html) is the shop for anything textiles-related.

Rainbow Silks (http://www.rainbowsilks.co.uk/) also has an excellent range.

Whichcraft is wonderful, I always come out with more than I went in with!

Also, on the weekend I bought some stunning beads from John Lewis, ground floor on the right of the shop.

Here's hoping I might finally strike lucky...
Does anyone know of anywhere I might be able to get small pieces of fleece? I have a toy book with patterns that call for something like 12 inch squares (very small quantities) and I can only find stuff sold by the metre.
Of course, I could just start a production line and make LOTS of them!!:hihi:

I haven't checked recently, but John Lewis always used to cut lengths from a roll of a fabric down to 15 or 20 cm. I can't recall offhand which it was now.

Have you tried Dunelm Mills? They have an excellent selection of fabrics and you might get lucky and find something suitable in their 'seconds' section. I bought some cotton fabric there the other week which was supposedly a second, and I couldn't find a thing wrong with it.

A new craft shop which is in it's infancy is at the Scout Supplies Shop on Trippet Lane. I know it sounds strange but it's going to be really good. It is open now although there is only a small area on the ground floor of the shop but the main area is downstairs. The staff are brilliant and if you ask they will direct you as, at the moment, it isn't signed. It does need lots of support to get 'off the ground' successfully. Vicky is the lady who is running it and will always be pleased to meet you.

annemeg
09-01-2007, 15:14
Yes it is. I know it sounds strange as when you go in you think you're in the wrong place, being surrounded by Scout & Guide stuff. When you go in the shop look to the wall at the left and you will see a small amount of craft bits and pieces but just ask and you'll be directed to the downstairs craft department. It will shortly be better signed and better publicised. At the moment there are some good bargains to be had.

A brilliant craft shop to visit is B-Craft-E on Sandstone Road. It's at the back side of Meadowhall. Sandstone Road is off the the left half way up Jenkin Road. I discovered this shop last November and has a wide range of everything and also runs regular craft classes. Not a shop to visit if you're in a hurry as there's so much to see.

Hello.

I can strongly recommend Artscene on Chesterfield Road just opposite Arnold Lavers.
She has a lot of stuff in the window and its possible to drive/walk past without thinking she is actually open.
It is a real Alladins Den inside, but if there is anyone in sheffield that can help with Art or Craft related problems it is this lady.
She has forgotten more about art materials than most of us have ever know.

Give it a try.....she is possibly the last independant Arts & Craft supplier left in the area and has been helping people for nearly 2 decades.

So dont forget Artscene...Chesterfield Road...Sheffield.

Help keep these small independants alive.

There seems to be an abundance of craft shops in the area. I am quite sure that they are all very good for the normal everyday items.
But if you also require the shopkeeper to have enough knowledge of your regular craft or any new ideas you may be entertaining, then the lady at Artscene...Chesterfield Road is you best bet.
She has personally been in the business of selling Art & Craft supplies in Sheffield for over 2 decades.
She knows here stuff and if she doesnt have what you are looking for she has enough contacts in the industry to get hold of just about anything.
All that experience/customer service and unlike other new retailers when she keeps to here word and pulls out all the stops to get you what you want.
These smaller independant retailers are being distroyed by the likes of Hobbycraft etc....keep you business local and help those that have been serving Sheffield for decades.

Poundland (in Meadowhell, don't know about the one in town) is well worth a visit! They do packs of assorted embellishments, do it yourself card packs, felt, those double sided sticky things, little cross stitch kits, etc, etc.

I did an internet order with Beads Unlimited (http://www.beadsunlimited.co.uk/) at the w/e for a family friend. I know nothing about beads and just added a load to my basket without really checking the options (my fault).

They just phoned up and explained they could save me a good 1/5 off my order price by giving me the cilps and other bits in bulk because of the quantity I'd ordered.

How's that for service? Phoning me up to tell me they've saved me money and I've still got exactly what I ordered (but not in ickle plastic bags) :D

A friend of mine called in on her way back from Craft Haven (formerly Whiteheads) on London Road, and said it was great!

They also do a series of workshops incredibly cheap - £5 for 2 hours!! Plus some longer/more expensive courses.

http://www.crafthaven.co.uk/information.php?osCsid=1d61b0109a1e9fa27076e17914c 4b3bf&info_id=8

i have been on some of these courses. they are really good. the shop supplies everything, and what they don't, they will get. the couple who run the shop are really friendly and helpful, and make you feel welcome on the courses

I like how Hobbycraft at Meadowhall has so much all in one place - very handy, but I do think that it's quite expensive - I buy quite alot of haberdashery and knitting stuff and can usually find that for less elsewhere - atkinsons on the moor, and fine fabrics in hillsburgh

Blyth Craft studio, just outside Worksop is great for paper crafts, the staff are really friendly and helpful and they do craft workshops every other month or so and get guest crafters in!

The Red Hart pub next door is worth a visit for lunch too!

I don't think so, because I tried to go one Saturday afternoon, and it was closed, but that was a couple of weeks back. It's a shame, cause it's a good shop

Sorry to inform everyone but past times in Woodseats has now closed down such a shame. But I'm always interested in finding new craft shops for card making.
My favourite place is craft-tastic at Hillsborough and Elaine and Dorothy who are always in the shop are always welcoming and helpful.

Does anyone know of an alternative to Farbric Warehouse for upholstery fabric? (I'm looking for a thick, sturdy black fabric that would probably come under upholstery rather than dressmaking. I've already tried Fine Fabrics and John Lewis.

Im interested in beads, can you tell me what days the stall on the moor is there pls:)

I agree with Hayley1 who mentioned sewandso.co.uk I've used them a few times and its a brilliant service. Often cheaper than Hobbycraft and a good selection of products.

I agree re Sewandso.co.uk - have used them for years - service is excellent and so are the prices.

Anybody interested in machine embroidery? Can thoroughly recommend Lords SewKnit at Oswaldtwistle Mills in Lancs. About 1.1/2 hours up the motorway but they do mail order on the net. Stock Brother sewing machines and all the threads & stabilisers needed for machine embroidery. Service is excellent, as are the staff. Stockists of Anita Goodesign embroidery CDs.

I would highly recommend The Craft Box @ Elsecar Heritage Centre, Barnsley.
I went there today for the first time and I was impressed with the range of items the shop had aswell as the friendliness of the staff.
For a couple of years I have been debating wether I should buy a Sizzix Machine.
When I went to The Craft Box they had a Sizzix Big Shot Machine on offer from £79.99 to £64.99!
The woman who was working there came over and offered me a quick lesson on the basics of using the machine
If I was going to buy one, I agreed and was glad I did. She was extremely friendly and knew what she was talking about.
I also bought an embossing folder, guillotine, dye cutter, scissors, embellishments and some storage boxes aswell as the sizzix machine.
They also stock a wide range of other items including cards, envelopes, stamps, inks, embellisments, papers, decoupage sets etc etc
I will definately be going back soon in the future. :)

I would also recommend:
Hobbycraft @ Meadowhall
Busy Bees Crafts @ Woodhouse

Hi,
sorry blaze just seen your message.
The shop is down from the asda, on the row of shops near the bowling alley. they have started doing craft sessions, the lady who teaches you works for craft company and is in the magazines. I attended a stamping session a few weeks ago which was excellent, and right on my door step!!
i thought i would put a list up of the sessions they have coming up for anyone else who may be interested

Saturday 13th -10-12pm - children’s stamping
Thursday 18th - 10 - 12pm - embossing
Saturday 20th - 10 - 12pm - punches
Wednesday 24th - 6-8pm - stamping
Wednesday 1st Dec - 6-8pm - Heat embossing

Saturday 11th 10-12pm and possibly 2-4pm if they get lots of people booked on. this class is £10 but you get a goody bag to take home,

I had to book onto the class, because they are have a limit on spaces.

Where the craft shop was based is a little area with that had 3 craft type shops. This was a great craft shop and it has changed what it sells. They still do picture framing though.
Next door to it there is a card & cake craft shop. They sell a little cardmaking stuff and have a sale on at the moment. They have loads of interesting things for making & decorating cakes.
Next door to that there is a great bead & jewellery making shop. They've got masses of beads and all the necessary bits & bobs to make things. They run classes and the staff are very helpful and seem to know what they are doing.
