Lisa,

As you are a fellow master of the magic loop method, can you look at the Jaywalker pattern and tell me if you would try to adapt it for magic loop please? I've looked at it and I think you could but what is flumoxing me at the moment is that if it is knitted on 4 needles, the start of needle 1 is at the back of the leg. Would this make it in the middle of the heel? Is the heel flap knitted over needles 1 and 4?

I would value your opinion.

Hecate, maybe you could advise because although you're not familiar with magic loop you have experience of Jaywalker.

Thanks guys:help: :D

That's right. The stitches on needles 1 and 4 form the heel flap. The centre of the heel flap is the point where needle 4 meets needle 1 (ie between the last stitch on needle 4 and the first stitch on needle 1).

Sounds like you need the equivelent of needles 1 and 4 on one end and 2 and 3 on the other if you are going to do it magic loop. What are you thinking of doing them in? They are on my list of socks to do byt that list is getting ever longer:o

Had a little play with dpns and circulars this evening,

If, as I thought, you do them on dpns, you knit forward at the heel flap all of needle 1, then turn and work back along needle 1 then work needle4. With magic loop you can't do this (as the join forms the start of the row at the side of the leg not centre back) and continue to work so the pattern would need to be adapted to work the configuration differently. It should be able to be worked out because with magic loop you work all the instep stitches on one needle and the sole stitches on the other. I have done top down socks by magic loop so it is possible - concertina (http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i217/turra21/concertina1-1.jpg)

I haven't decided what to use yet but I think it might be CTH Country Garden (http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i217/turra21/supersockcountrygarden.jpg)

I think the only reason for doing that half row business is to put the cuff join at the centre back of your leg so could you ignore the half row? Someone please let me know if this is wrong:D The CTH should be lovely - Hecate has done hers in CTH.

Yes, I'm sure you're right. I would double check though first, just to make sure that the stitch pattern is preserved if you alter the position of where the heel starts. You'll be using the same stitch number for the heel though, so it sounds right.

I have a sneaking suspicion that it might not be the case for all sock patterns, for example, where the stitch pattern is such that x number of pattern repeats encircle the leg section and then are split to preserve the pattern over foot. I could be wrong about that though :suspect: .

The CTH is lovely. I did both my Jaywalkers in it. I used Indian Summer for the first pair and Old Rose for the second.

What does it wash and wear like?

To be honest, I don't know. I've only washed the first pair once (too warm for sock-wearing!), and I've yet to block the second.

That's my problem too. I've only been knitting socks since May this year and as such I haven't had much chance to wear them even up here in the frozen north!

All this lovely yarn and no chance to try it out:huh:
