View Full Version : Does anyone remember Mr Gundry ... richpc 22-07-2006, 17:14 He was a teacher at Greenhill Junior School I was there 1975 to 1981? Anyone know what happened to him angelamary 22-07-2006, 19:00 I went to that school from when it first opened in 1952-56, did he walk around the classroom with a vic,s nasal spray attached to his nose, if it,s the same teacher, i never learnt anything as he spoke down his nose all the time. Daven 24-07-2006, 08:34 He retired due to ill health in the 90's . Liked the man ! teeny 24-07-2006, 09:02 or how about Mr Taylor Miss rotherforth Mrs Haynes . Mrs hemmings and Miss Maynard Daven 24-07-2006, 12:15 Don't recall any of those names . A lot of the older and more experienced teachers at Greenhill School have moved on over the past few years - probably due to the Head teacher who is in charge now ! A real bar stool who cares very little for the happiness of the children in the school and more about targets etc. teeny 24-07-2006, 20:22 is that where the deputy was Miss Keyhoe?? she was brilliantand he needs to go not her BRING HER BACK:hihi: i left Greenhill school in 1975 , i ;liked the school but the head was called mr wooffit and she was a cow to all as well sugarnspice 24-07-2006, 20:24 I remember him too! :D Daven 24-07-2006, 21:05 Ms Kehoe also left following a bout of ill health ! -is there a pattern emerging here ? She was brilliant - but rumour had it that her great love of music and her inspiration of a lot of pupils to take up playing musical instruments didn' t ' fit in ' with the current Heads ' targets and interferred with the curriculum - so she had to go ! What a shame - Greenhill School musical concerts were second to none ! sugarnspice 24-07-2006, 21:07 I also liked Mrs. Calvert & Mr. Hawksworth (amazing teller of stories! :) ) too. And lovely Mrs Thorpe. Awwww I'm feeling all sentimental now. Daven 24-07-2006, 21:09 I also liked Mrs. Calvert & Mr. Hawksworth (amazing teller of stories! :) ) too. And lovely Mrs Thorpe. Awwww I'm feeling all sentimental now. Mrs Calvert and I think Mr Hawksworth are still there - but sadly Mrs Thorpe retired - hence the new Head ! sugarnspice 24-07-2006, 21:11 Awww I miss them all now! You think they'll take me back aged 27? I am utterly fabulous at finger painting. I'd so beat those kids when the gold stars are given out. :D Daven 24-07-2006, 21:12 It used to be such a friendly school - but sadly things have changed .... sugarnspice 24-07-2006, 21:13 Really? How sad! It was a lovely little school. Why do you think things have changed? CHAIRBOY 24-07-2006, 21:14 or how about Mr Taylor Miss rotherforth Mrs Haynes . Mrs hemmings and Miss Maynard Methinks that could be Miss Mary Haynes whom I believe moved on to Westways Junior and could be still there? sugarnspice 24-07-2006, 21:14 or how about Mr Taylor Miss rotherforth Mrs Haynes . Mrs hemmings and Miss Maynard I remember a Mrs Maynard I think? Daven 24-07-2006, 21:21 Things changed after Mrs Thorpe left and the new Headteacher arrived . He is very focused on results and targets and league tables - as all Heads are these days - but to the point of obsession ! He can't interact with children very well either and has made some very strange choices of promotion within the school . So many of the older and more experienced teachers left soon after he arrived - which speaks volumes ! Yes , it is a shame because Greenhill School was, in my opinion, the best Primary school in Sheffield and I was proud for my children to have gone there. sugarnspice 24-07-2006, 21:24 Things changed after Mrs Thorpe left and the new Headteacher arrived . So many of the older and more experienced teachers left soon after he arrived - which speaks volumes ! Yes , it is a shame because Greenhill School was, in my opinion, the best Primary school in Sheffield and I was proud for my children to have gone there. I am really sad to hear this. I had kind of hoped that my children would go there too once they reach school age. I guess the good times left with Mrs Thorpe then? :( Daven 24-07-2006, 21:31 I think so sadly - but the school still has a good reputation locally I think . I am told that people still move into the area so they are in the catchment area - so it can't all be bad ! I am just remembering how things used to be and I suppose nothing stays the same for long ! Shame though ! sugarnspice 24-07-2006, 21:34 There was only ever one teacher that I actually disliked and her name has completely gone out of my head now. But she was pretty scary! I think she was only there for a year. Mrs Finbow was lovely but Mrs Calvert was my favourite ( I was soooooo her little pet ;) ) x Daven 24-07-2006, 21:38 All my kids were taught by Mrs Calvert and they all loved her ! Mrs Finbow was one of the ones who left soon after the present boss arrived . I think she had a lot of input with the children with SENs teeny 24-07-2006, 21:38 Miss maynard taught french and was a great story teller , a really nice person , no mrs haynes was elderly and retired in 1984, i think she lived o westwick road and drove an old triamph car:) sugarnspice 24-07-2006, 21:39 Oh and Mrs Yates with that lovely long hair! Mrs Calvert really was lovely, very maternal and always fair (and dished out gold stars like they were going out of fashion). Daven 24-07-2006, 21:41 Yes she is lovely - and Mrs Yates has still got her long hair - she did the last time I saw her ! sugarnspice 24-07-2006, 21:42 I even liked Mr Wright even though he screamed at me when my map of the world was utterly wrong. Ahhhh memories ..... Still trying to remember the name of the scary lady, it's killing me! Daven 24-07-2006, 21:45 Was it Mrs Francis ? Daven 24-07-2006, 21:49 Because if it was - and I can understand why a small child might be scared of her - she was actually a pussycat and a really sweet person. Sadly, she passed away a few years ago. sugarnspice 24-07-2006, 21:52 Was it Mrs Francis ? She was quite stern but no, definitely not her. It was Mrs B.... Mrs B.... Mrs B..... Hell I cannot remember! sugarnspice 25-07-2006, 10:24 All my kids were taught by Mrs Calvert and they all loved her ! Mrs Finbow was one of the ones who left soon after the present boss arrived . I think she had a lot of input with the children with SENs When were your kids at Greenhill School? kanga 25-07-2006, 11:54 Was it Mrs Behan or something like that? Was she the one who used to complain that everyone sounded like a bunch of wet cabbages when they sang, or am I mixing schools up..?! I really liked Mr Hawksworth, Mrs Finbow, Mrs Thorpe and Mrs Jones. Mrs Baker the school secretary was lovely too :D It's a shame if the school's changed as you say, I always liked it there. I didn't want to leave to go to Meadowhead at all! Forgot to say... yes, I do remember Mr Gundry, he was my teacher in the last year. I always remember when he sat down on a chalk drawing (of fireworks I think) one day and when he stood up, he had them all over his bum... oops. angelamary 25-07-2006, 12:15 I was their the very first day it opened and it was marvellous, everything spanking new, and the school dinners were wonderful, on Coronation Day we ate ice-cream and were given presents of mugs, pencil cases etc. Cannot remember any of the teacher,s except a Mrs. Parker who we had to go and read to every week as a test, she was very frightning, a lot of the children would be sick or wet them selves, Oh happy days!!!!!!! Daven 25-07-2006, 14:04 [QUOTE=sugarnspice]When were your kids at Greenhill School?[/QUOTEThe oldest started in 1992 and the youngest left in 2003 teeny 25-07-2006, 20:55 anyone here about my age ie nearly 42, i went to Greenhill from Christmas of J2 and i sat with Susan Buckley, victoria crabtree, michelle snell, Paul Jenkinson and Howard saunders kanga 06-08-2006, 21:07 Was it Mrs Behan or something like that? I always remember when he sat down on a chalk drawing (of fireworks I think) one day and when he stood up, he had them all over his bum... oops. Just realised I was having a bit of a brain block when I wrote that.... I think the music teacher who compared the choir to wet cabbages was Mrs Alder. I'm sure there was a Mrs Behan somewhere though, just don't remember if she was at Greenhill or Meadowhead! teeny 06-08-2006, 21:09 mrs Behan was at Jordanthorpe and is a fantastic person , i think shes still around kanga 08-08-2006, 18:17 Thank you, I just couldn't think which school I knew her from! Surely my memory shouldn't be deserting me this early on in life..?! richpc 20-08-2006, 15:34 mrs Behan was at Jordanthorpe and is a fantastic person , i think shes still around Didn't see marry one of the science teachers (i can only remember him as jungle jim ?) jass 20-08-2006, 21:35 One of my lads was at Greenhill from 1993 and one of my daughters from 1996. The lad was in Mr Gundry's class. Think he was a first aider at the time. My lad had an accident in the yard and Mr G said it was nothing. I wasn't convinced when I went to pick him up. Turned out he had broken his ankle!!! Still, we all make mistakes. Cheers, Jass Daven 21-08-2006, 12:04 Top man though - even though he didn't have x ray eyes ! teeny 27-08-2006, 23:12 As far as i know Mrs Behan was and still is married to Mr behan !!! joeh205 10-09-2006, 19:44 my previous paragraph deleted itself so i will have to start again.. i myself went to greenhill, Mrs finbow was present while i was their but she left, as many other teachers did, the head at the moment was a ex-Ofsted inspector which may explain his obsession with targets. i myself thought the school was on a slope while i was there, there were arguments about the adventure playground that parents put money into, which was ignored and used to create a yard. charity events such as non uniform days for red nose day, it is £1 and 50p goes towards the school, doesn't the school get enough funding from the council? parents had felt left down and i did not want to move to Meadowhead, when i did move, it was incomparable to greenhill, and now with Meadowhead building a new school it will be even better seamonster 19-12-2006, 16:38 or how about Mr Taylor Miss rotherforth Mrs Haynes . Mrs hemmings and Miss Maynard oh my god. i remember them all, if a bit hazy. who was the fantastic guy with the curly hair, hang on possibly Mr Dent? I was at Greenhill up to 79 when i went on to Jordanthorpe. i seem to remember a french teacher too who i think i liked. Didn't Mr Gundry have a bit of a B O problem?! ahhh how it's flooding back! helbco 19-02-2007, 11:25 was anyone around in my era - 63/65? Mrs Starkey,Mrs Cole, Mr Sowerby, Mr (Peter) Williams (had a girlfiend called Susan). Shaun/Sean Barnes, David Longley/field?, David Brown. Pinocchio - the play, Mr Sowerby's Christmas speech about not expected major Christmas presents (stayed with me forever!). 4B 1964/5 Betty1 20-04-2007, 20:35 The current head is leaving this Summer ! Spanishblade 12-05-2009, 14:33 oh my god. i remember them all, if a bit hazy. who was the fantastic guy with the curly hair, hang on possibly Mr Dent? MR Dent with his curly locks, great teacher always had a smile and never lost his temper. No one took advantage of his good nature though. Kids respected him because he respected us. Best Teacher I have ever had! |
