Today I decided to visit Crystal peaks library, as I wanted three books. When I got there I scoured the shelves for the books, only to find that none of them were there. So I asked an assitant who told me that those books couldn't be located at any library in the city, and to order and reserve would mean she'd have to charge me! Cheeky! So off I went in search of other titles to interest me. During my search I was appauled by the amount of noise in there, I noticed a young woman trying to study in the study area provided, and it was obvious to me that she couldn't hear herself think! I was really disgusted by the way the staff in there behaved, it was like a gossip shop! What happened to silence and whispering in libraries? hmm!

The Adsetts Centre's like that as well. It's a nightmare if you want some peace and quiet to study.

Where's that? I've never heard of it! I really am a little annoyed about it, I kind of like the peace and tranquility that a library is supposed to have! The staff in there may just like to hang around and gossip all day but somepeople are studying to improve their futures! Cheeky lot!

Oh, sorry, it's the uni library. I should have said that.

It's opposite the Crucible.

Whilst we're on the subject of libraries, the Central Library doesn't sort its fiction into genre's. Its the only library Ive ever been into which does this. It wouldn't matter so much if they put stickers on the books to give you a clue, but It looks like they stopped doing that years ago as the only books which will give you this hint are ragged.

Must confess,I have never been to crystal peak's library but I know what you mean, there are so many Ignoramus's about today that need to be given a lesson in manner's, and much more education, and made to realize that there are other people in the world as well as them. They should have a short, sharp, shock, and taken down a peg or two,to take some of the arrogance out of them. It is disclipine they need, and it should be given in the home when these people are very young. It is our stupid laws, to blame for abolishing punishment,so that parent's are afraid to chastise their children. Halevan. Thur.30/1/03.

I agree that a lack of discipline as a child may be whats caused their sheer arrogance in this case. I personally, have always had respect for others and followed guidelines in libraries accordingly. It stems from the fact that my parents told me to treat people as I'd like to be treat. It's a shame other people don't follow the same lead. :-(

Actually Hallam don't call the Adsetts centre the library, they call it 'The Learning Centre' which I find patronising.

I bet! haha! If the noise is anything like what I had to put up with at the peaks, I'd feel well and truly patronised!

Got to agree, the way some people are being brought up beggars belief. A childs first few years at school should be used to teach them discipline, courtesy and common sense, several things that seem to be sadly lacking these days. My wife works at a primary school and the behavioral problems she tells me about are unbelievable. Politically correct attitudes are to blame, parents, teachers, politicians, we create our own problems !

Definately. I agree with that 100%. Kids don't seem to have manners these days. It's about time schools started teaching it. A shocking report in the paper the other week about some kid who sucessfully sued her school because they kept her behind school in detention. She claimed it was a breach of her human rights. :?: :?: :?:

I would say that the majority of kids get things far too easily. There is a definate lack of discipline in schools and homes these days. I started this topic complaining about the "adults" working in peaks library. Those were the ones who needed to learn some respect for the others, because all the younger people were being perfectly quiet.

Sometimes I think people forget that children are children and what exactly that means. It means they sometimes dont know any better and that they need to be told and told again. I think there are problems with the way children used to be brought up. But I think there are more problems now. That makes me think perhaps we should go back to an older style of school teaching and parenting. If only it were that simple.

The failing parents of today were brought up by the parents of yesterday, I know you've got to draw the line somewhere, but I dont know where.

Not anymore Caprice, the whole nature of libraries are changing rapidly. Gone are the days when libraries were just about books.

You can expect to find all sorts of activities going on now (and you'll not be pleased to hear some of them are noisy).

Some libraries (not Sheffield of course  ) have creches, coffe shops, computer suites, play/story telling/art & craft areas. The idea being to encourage people who wouldn't otherwise partake in libraries.

I take it that you don't approve ;)

Suggest you report your wife to Ofsted as she appears to be a failing teacher in a failing primary school. Maybe she could get a job in a library though?

that's the way to get children into reading and books isn't it, almighty SHHHHHHHHHHHH every time they open their mouths!

Obviously kids shouldn't be rude and shouting their heads off but if you get more than two kids talking in the normal way that they do then sorry but you are gonna hear it!

It might not be much help, but you can ask the library to issue you with a pin no and you can search the whole catalogue online, it can save a disappointing journey to the library. If you find the book you want you can reserve it online - but they'll charge you when you go to collect it!

The library service does seem to be improving. Two books I requested on ILL recently they actually bought for their own stock :o

The ordinary request service works well too, you can see where all copies of a book actually are and request a copy to be delivered to your local library for collection. - the charge of 50p is quite reasonable IMO.

Library portal is here ...

http://hip.sheffield.gov.uk/ipac20/ipac.jsp?session=111WT02I61734.63290&profile=dial--2&menu=search&submenu=power&ts=1114802361750

and I think you have to present your library ticket in person to get a PIN, not something you can do by phone.

Agree with caprice to some degree, - there should be a quiet area in every library to study books that are reference only and can't be borrowed to read in the peace and quiet of your own home.

I work in a library (not Crystal Peaks!), and when kids are in, especially if they come in with school or a big group then its very difficult to make them be quiet! one class that comes in has a teacher who's so scary they daren't make a noise! while theres another class where the teacher ignores bad behavior and one lad pulls all the books of the shelves asnd tries 2 climb up everything!

Libraries are trying to encourage everyone to use their services, as today many people simply don't want to read, especially kids. But theres various things happening that are encouraging kids (and adults) to come in and read. The service has changed, but it had to or it'd be stuck in the past!

As for noisy workers, I haven't been to Crystal peaks but I do know one person who works there and she isn't noisy, but I know that they do get a bit loud sometimes. I think Ecclesall's meant to be worst for this though.
