I was born in London but my mother's birth cert. shows Bellefield Road in Sheffield. When I went to find it last year it was mostly a green space. Any ideas what the houses were like there in the old days?

(NB: She had me very late in life otherwise this might look a bit odd) hazeinadaze 21-07-2006, 12:39 Thanks for the tip about the site but no luck. docmel 21-07-2006, 13:47 If you mean Bellefield Street and not Road, then the green space would be the 'Ponderosa' - (Bonanza was on TV at the time) Most of the houses were cleared away during the slum clearance of the 60's but if you go back to the Pictures Sheffield Site and search for Mushroom Lane - in fact look on a map and search for streets round where Bellefield Street was - you may have some luck. I searched for Mushroom Lane and came up with the following link - not specifically Bellefield Street, but gives you some idea what the housing was like. http://www.picturesheffield.com/cgi-bin/picturesheffield.pl?_cgifunction=form&_layout=picturesheffield&keyval=sheff.refno=u01763 deecee 21-07-2006, 16:40 It could also have been Bellefield lane which was off Fawcett Street in " The Hollow", as it was locally known. Bellefield Street is opposite side of the street to St Stephens church, just as Docmel states , it is part of the Ponderosa (The Tip ) hazeinadaze 22-07-2006, 08:43 Many thanks, docmel. I rechecked Mum's birth cert. and it was Bellefield Street. I think that photo link must give a pretty accurate idea of what 'my' street looked like. So, many thanks - appreciated. |
