View Full Version : North Sheffield I adore you!
custardcream 21-06-2004, 09:57 Come on you lot from the north of the city...where are you?
I've lived in Parson Cross all my life (not 6mths like some people in other areas!) and I love it up here!!
It might not be at the top of (or even on) t020's list of places to live in Sheffield but its home for me and mi kids....So come on,if you live up here (Chap,Ecco,PX,Shre Gr,Sthy,Long,) get typing!!
Oh, not forgetting;
F/park,F/vale etc....(before Abdul shouts at me!)
mr craig 21-06-2004, 10:33 Wow,another parody thread.
Maybe i should start one. "City center, i loves joo!!!!111!!"
One persons pit is anothers pride and joy
Lived on the Cross for 13 years.. Never had major issues with the estate in all fairness..

For all you amateur historians out there, North Sheffield has a history to match anywhere else in the country. Don't believe me? Do some research.
Fir Vale and Page Hall sure look bad but are slowly improving, but they have a community spirit which is helping improve the area. Firth Park is nice and improving all the time. Wincobank Hill is the King of Sheffield hills. Shiregreen, Longley, and Shirecliffe all need flattening (I have nothing against the areas, but a lot of the Forum's idiots come from there, and I can be quite vindictive when provoked ;) )
I've recently been transferred into the Burngreave ward for the local elections. What was that all about, I'd love to know
You've got good bus services (until 6pm), lots of parks and open green space and the Northern General Hospital on your doorstep - handy if you're knifed in one of the local drinking establishments... (joke)
I especially enjoy hearing the dawn chorus when I leave for work in the morning...at least the birds don't care in which part of Sheffield they live. :P

And on behalf of all the 'Forum idiots' who live in these areas Abdul, we thank you for your really well-thought-out comment:mad:
I've lived in S6 nearly all my life, spent 22 years in lower Walkley, moved up Stannington (borderline REAL Stannington) in 1997... No problems at all round here, apart from the practically non-existent bus services in upper Stannington
Sam Miguel 21-06-2004, 17:24 I lived on the Shiregreen for many years up to the mid-eighties and loved it there.
Internetowl 21-06-2004, 17:45 I note tonight that the police are going to extend the anti-social orders they have in force in Fir Vale up to Shiregreen and Wincobank too. Not before time and don't forget Firth Park (Chavsville) whilst you are at it.
Longley rools! (hows that for irony?)

Wonder why them Brigantines built their forts on 'slag' heaps?
And is it true that the present occupants are called WINCOBANKERS? And who put the 'INCOB' in the middle? And why? :)
im so glad i dont live on penistone road:D :D :D :D :D

Nice to see you take the bait, boys. I had hoped you'd rise above it. It was a comment made in jest

And so were our replies Abdul, so were our replies.
Bit pointless posting on here though if you don't expect a response ain't it!
Now where were we? North Sheffield? Nowt wrong with it at all.
I love it.

I hate Chap, because it's full of chavs. If i am on a bus back from city centre on a saturday night, the place seethes with my own personal vision of hell.
Mind you, it has one of the best chip-shops ever next to the asda and the Pizza hut delivery service is the best I've encountered too.
I guess if there is one redeeming feature of Chaveltown it is that it has decent take aways.

I did a bit of research when I lived there but found nothing remarkable...what did you find ??
As for Wincobank being the "the King of Sheffield hills", it's really just one of several Princes. At 525 feet about the same height as Heeley Bank, Shirecliffe and Upper Walkley. Grenoside at 820 feet and the hill behind Bradfield at 1300 feet put Wincobank in the shade.
Of course it's very prominent looking from the lower Don Valey but not these days very attractive half clothed in housing estates.
Yodameister 22-06-2004, 22:16 I've lived in Longley for 4 weeks now. OK to be honest I probably wouldn't have moved here if I could afford a house in Hillsborough, but I really like it so far.
It is quiet, where I am the neighbours are nice, its really chilled out compaed to the bustle of Broomhill and Hillborough which I like. And the park is baeutiful.
I moved to Firvale 3 months ago and I love it! I think it is a case of choosing your street with care, but the whole area is on the up. We moved from Crookes and with no friends over this way it seemed like a bit of a leap into the unknown. Our neighbours are great, very friendly and welcoming and I have seen no trouble so far.
The look of horror when we told people we were moving over this way worried me slightly, I must admit, but all our friends have taken it back and are now saying we are really lucky.
I love sitting on Osgathorpe (or is it Earl Marshall?) park and seeing SO MANY trees in all directions.
I also love the fact that by buying over here we have not over-stretched ourselves financially, and so have more disposable income
custardcream 23-06-2004, 09:14 Glad to hear that there are people on the forum that do like to live this end of town. You mention where your from normally and you just get crap off other people who think owt south of the city centre is The best place in the world to live....
biscuit anyone?
....well ive already et um!!
i love shiregreen iv never had any bad problems with it i like it that much me and my bloke have just baught a house there.
I lived at longley for 21 years with parents, then moved to shirecliffe with my partner.
Was worried at first as it had a bad reputation then, we've been here 4 years now and its wonderfull... NEVER had any trouble .. no noise and touch wood not seen any crime so far.
The neighbours are fantastic .. cut your grass for you , take your bin out if you forget etc!!
I hate when other people on the site rave about the south of the city as if they look down on us !! Know what i mean
custardcream 23-06-2004, 15:53 Nice to hear it Mer...I'm exactly the same with my neighboours...I'll take there bins out,cut the grass (even on the front)...when i'm not about one the other neighbours do'es these things.....I think it creates more of a friendly atmosphere as well as keeping our surrondings tidy..

Yeah, just cos they live in posh Eccleshall etc and read the posh papers like the Times, the Guardian etc they think they're better than everyone else... Bleh, they are no different to anyone who comes from say Walkley or Crookes, they just happen to live in a, according to them "more respectable" area.
I realise this post may sound like a dig at the likes of t020, but it isn't, it's just in agreement with the quoted post that people from supposedly "posh" areas look down their noses at people they deem as being from "common" areas or backgrounds.
Yes it does sound like a dig at me. I've never "looked down my nose", but if someone asked me if I'd rather live in somewhere like Shirecliffe or Ecclesall, why would I lie? In terms of crime as well, I've proved with statistics several times that the wards in Sheffield Hallam have well below average crime for Sheffield. If being proud of/pleased about where one lives equates to "looking down my nose", then yes you can accuse me of "looking down my nose", but if that applies to me it also applies to almost everyone on here who likes where they live, including you Rich.
Mod: Behave you two, or your posts are going to get deleted! :nono:
custardcream 24-06-2004, 08:38 give it some!!

you are free to mention Wharncliffeside, Oughtibridge ,Deepcar and the slope heads......its any area this side of town...
Wharncliffe Side used to be really nice when I was a kid and still at school. A lot of the people I know who live there now don't really like it. Theres a big newish developement now where I used to play, and walk my dogs.
I use to live in stocksbrigde not much change there just more exspensive houses and less local feel. I have now moved to Thurgoland.. bit better but they want to build more house here can't get away from them developers.
custardcream 26-06-2004, 16:14 shame about Thurgoland all these new, dare i say, out of character homes springing up..........
I live at and love Parson Cross.....thank you!
somertswrong 27-06-2004, 11:58 i live at southey and have no probs its not as bad as people think
There's good and bad bits in more or less every area of Sheffield. Shame really....

t0T0,
I agree! Ecclesall road is great!
Would you have a S5 postcode if you won the lottery jackpot?
That's the test of a good area.
People make me laugh when they start saying "its not as bad as people think". I mean what is that suppose to mean?? In other words its a way of saying I'll defend the area I live in to death even if I know very well its onbe of the roughest area in Sheffield... God take it on board: PX and shirecliffe are horrible places to live in. 90% of people there are YOBS. I'm only saying the truth... Shame for the other 10% yes..
It's a bit like the old "but you get that everywhere" line, usually reeled off calmly after tales of vehicle arson. Speak for yourself is all I can say!
royjames 07-07-2004, 19:49 I lived on parson cross for 40 yrs, until very recently when my property was on the demolition list so I had to move.
I live near west street now and I have to say that although I miss the cross and most of my friends who still live there I am happy in my new home.
I used to live on buchanan road which is now completley unrecognisable from when I was a child,it is now full of boarded up houses which is a real shame, but the people on the cross are the salt of the earth and deserve much better.
Even my old local pub the parson cross hotel is now a shadow of what it used to be like, but I had some good nights in that pub.
Finally I hope that the area can regenerate and become the nice area it used to be.
feederfil 07-07-2004, 20:57 I've lived in North Sheffield all my life,Foxhill,High Green Hillsborough,Wincobank and now Wadsley Bridge.Where I live now it's two minutes away from fantastic countryside and five minutes away from very good shopping and amenities.Parson Cross Church of England Primary school, incidentally has one of the best results in Sheffield for all round education.I used to go to High Storrs Grammar School andI used to look forward to going home "back oop north".If ever anybody wants to see Sheffield in all it's glory go on to the "backedge" at foxhill and just enjoy the view!!
North Sheffield?
This sums it up...walking down Penistone Road a few years back a foreign visitor to Sheffield saw the allotments/pigeon sheds and asked "Ah so you have the shanty towns in England too?"

"PX and shirecliffe are horrible places to live in. 90% of people there are YOBS. I'm only saying the truth... Shame for the other 10% yes.."
I beg your pardon ...until you have lived here how can you comment...i have lived here for 4 1/2 years and not seen any YOBS thank you!!!
Nice to see you havent put your location on your log in id sony whats up ashamed!!!
I am proud of where i live its nice and quiet and have NEVER seen any YOBS or crime while living here thanx!!
HA HA HA!! I used to live on lindsay road in PX and all I saw were yobs hanging about on deerlands ave, and near the shops on top of lindsay ave... And I lived there 6 and a half years!!! So I certainly know what I'm on about...
oh yeah, you say you haven't seen any yobs in over 4 years of living there, surely you must be blind...
Some people say that we need uneducated, untrained yobs.
Who else is going to work for the National Minimum Wage ?
Or join the armed forces?

Sony .. you must be the blind one.. if you'd looked at my location then you'd realised im talking about SHIRECLIFFE...not PX !!!
Shirecliffe, parson cross, same thing...
Dont think so.... have you ever lived in shirecliffe ........if so then you may be able to compare...
By saying they are the same is the same as calling me a liar , cause ive never seen any yobs in 4 yrs and you dont believe me ....... cause shirecliffe and px are the same GET REAL!!
Each community is different no matter how close they are, most of my friends live in px so i know the differences
I've lived in the wincobank area for the last 19yrs or so. Great area, just lots of cocky little kids, curfew seems like a good idea! (all's quiet outside, yay) lets hope the police can enforce it and it's not gonna just be a good idea that gets washed up
I live in Shirecliffe and have done so for all my life, it's a great place with lots of friendly people and we all support each other.
OK there are some small number that are a bit unruly but most areas have that.

Actually I saw 20 or so girls today sat on the old Magnet wall each with prams. I thought it was a School Girl Single Mothers Convention.
SaxonLeigh 03-08-2004, 14:23 i've lived in high green all my 20 years on this earth & its been the best place (a little biast i know seen as i've lived there all my life). i dont know why there is this sheffield divide between north & south we all come from the same city & wether we come from the north or the south there are still good & bad adults & kids in every village. i come from high green but went to all saints rather than notre dame school (notre dame being the catchment school for our area), it is quite a mixed school because you had many people from the manor, wybourn, frecheville, whirlo, upperthorpe, abbydale, door, totley, lane top, PX, wincobank, firthpark etc so it was quite a good mix. from mixing with all these different people i learnt that its not where you come from that makes you who you are or even how you are. i was friends with people who you may call chavs or yobs because they wore tracksuits & wore baseball caps who came from the manor but from my experience they were much nicer people than the stuck up kids from dore & totley because they went stuck up & ingnorant of me, they took me on face value & treated me as an individual rather than looking down on me & judging me. now i'm not saying that these kids that were from dore etc all looked down on me & i'm not saying that the people on these forums do the same but as i said to these kids you should judge people on what area they come from or what clothes they wear, just cus your family has maybe a bit more money or not as much money & come from a slightly better place in our city or run down place in our city dosent make you any better or worse than me or the next person.
also as i've drove round the city its been pointed out many a time that north sheffield was once the 'rich' side, you look at the houses in pitsmore, page hall, they are rarther large for a poor side of the city, it dosent really make a difference if there is a poor & rich side i get sick of labels, i get sick of divides, we are all equal money is just paper it doesnt really mean anything. i'm sorry for the rant just some of these posts in this thread got me mad!
as for the person that asked if i won the lottory yes i would still live where i do!
shiregreen rules full of friendly people anyone disagrees ill come round and put your f***ing windows through:)

SHANE-D-PAIN 11-09-2006, 21:27 I live on Parson Cross when in Sheffield and it is fine around here, on my road.
I can walk for 10 minutes round the Corner though and risk the possibility of being mugged, any time of the day.
So yeah, it has it's good and bad areas. Nothing compared to going out around Abbeydale though. :O
You must be jokng with this thread:loopy:

why? whats funny about it?
okka north 11-09-2006, 21:38 sorry but lived up that way for a year and would never do it again. Then again we like what we like, we love what we love. If you are happy who cares what others think. Sign language to you all ie two fingers
why? whats funny about it?
The North of Sheffield?? Give me a break.
M0ved up here to Parson cross, 55 years ago Still do. Best move I ever did
bernie54 11-09-2006, 23:55 Very wise words from someone so young, SaxonLeigh, you should be very proud of yourself. And to everyone else who uses the my area is better than your area playground mentality needs to gain a bit more maturity. If someone is happy with where they live then who has the right to disagree. I have lived on the Shiregreen for 16 years and I must say I now hate living here I hate what it has become, but I can say that because I live here. That was not always the case, it has degenerated in the last few years, there was a time that my neighbours would take out each others bins or cut each others grass, now it is yob rule, and no one has a sense of pride in where they live. It is a great shame, this area is supposed to be regenerated and I hope it will become again what it once was but I very much doubt it. Oh and this is to Abdul if they flattened the Shiregreen, Shirecliffe, etc where would they move us to? probably your area so be careful what you wish for.
As a south Sheffielder brought up in deepest S2, and resident for over 35 years, and moved over to the north of Sheffield (well Deepcar) for the past 10 years, i feel that the north is much underated.
As with any big city the crime etc experienced in S2 was seen as the norm and increased significantly during the early 80s (especially burglary, car crime), but where i live now we see or hear of very little. But what drove me away was how the social fabric of the street and community dissapeared. Many of the houses which became availible, were bought by speculators for student acomodation, who in turn forced many of the families to leave (because of the noise at unsocial hours etc), which allowed further houses to be bought up, until the situation you have today. Great, it might now be seen as an area on the up, close to the city with a vibrant feel, but to be honest i hate to go down my old street because of the rubbish, unkept gardens, peeling paintwork etc. People had pride in the appearence of their houses, and how the area looked, but times have changed.
Give me the north any time now, where i feel my 2 small boys can experience life as i did as a youngster, with friendly neighbours, and a safer environment.
