View Full Version : Heeley, I adore you.
Sam Miguel 20-06-2004, 19:18 I've been living in Heeley for about 16 years now and I just love that area. It's so noisy, the houses are so, well, kept to an extent, plenty of ashphalt, and the bus is non-existent up there. I have never ever had to wait more than three days for the 51 bus, on average it seems like every day, just second best to number 47 bus. The bus is hardly ever there, as its those old horse-drawn double decker stage-coaches.
I used to live in Outer Mongolia and waiting for number 95 could be an absolute nightmare!!
Can't praise first buses for anything much but for no 51 it's appalling!
Its just lovely up here, despite the smog and gloom, and not far from town at all, the countryside is miles away. Only problem is of course the house prices, but judging by the size of them it can be justifiable.
Anyone else lives up this end and could tell me their likes and dislikes about Heeley?
Thanks

noseyrosie 20-06-2004, 19:30 Yeah good on you. Stupid Fulwoodies.
You live on Myrtle Road don't you? I have to say I'm nto too keen on that way over there, good with Millenium Park, but there seems to be far too many stooopid kids hanging round.
However, my bit's not that much better. Kids are also stupid there. It's also Heeley/Meersbrook, and my Dad's house is the Woodseats end of Meersbrook.
Anyway. Heeley, as I know it, has got a great community spirit, but not enough bleddy local shops!
Sort out the Chavs and it'll get better.
Sam Miguel 20-06-2004, 19:35 Yeah, I do love it. Actually, it's nice and quiet where we live and as you say, the community spirit is fantastic which keeps us here.
I originate from the other end of the city but find this is much more satisfying.

Stupid fulwoodies??? Is there any need no say that?? Why would people living in fulwood be stupid?? I found Sam miguel's thread very funny but there you are taking all seriously.
My personal opinion of Heeley is that it's full of terraced houses which doesn't make the area very attractive and I work with a couple of people who live there and tell me its not great as they keep having problems with kids..
Well quality of living is important for most of us out there and if fulwood means living decently well I'd rather stay where I am as being happy where you live is quite rare these days..
Before i ventured my way down to nottingham, i used to live at Heeley, and i loved it there, i have worked in a couple of the shops on heeley green, had a drink or too in the dearly departed Potters, ok you can get lippy kids, but you get them where ever you live, if i ever have to move back to sheffield, Heeley is where i would live.

And that sounded like i was being serious did it?
367squadron 21-06-2004, 15:21 I live in Heeley and i have mixed feeling about it. It's nice because you are close to the centre and we have a better bus service than most areas, ie on East road there is no. 6, 47, 48, 51 that all run into town. I think thats quite good especially when it only takes 5mins on the bus to get into the centre.
What I don't like are the kids around my age that annoy old people and shout abuse to you if your alone.
All I adore Heeley because it is a very close community and its got lots of nice 'green areas'.

Maybe at your end, buit at our end we have either the 49/49a which is scheduled for very 15 mins and turns up every half hour if you're lucky and stops runnign after about 5.30, or the 14, which goes from a different stop (so you have to choose which of the 2 services) and although pretty much on time, comes only every 20 mins/30 mins after 6pm.
Sam Miguel 21-06-2004, 17:22 Anyway, I love it.
designbunny 21-06-2004, 18:48 I've just moved to Meersbrook/Heeley area and i really like it, everyone's really friendly + have had no problems. We have a bus stop right outside our door, which is handy except that it doesn't go to my work, which would be very handy lol! I sometimes catch the 14 bus to take me half way to work, tho sometimes its just as quick to walk.
Which pub is your local?
noseyrosie 21-06-2004, 19:47 Not the nearest to me, but you need to get y'sen down to the Sheaf View. Good beer :D
And they do a quiz on Wednesdays....my mum won it by texting me while I was at home and I looked up the answers on Google...
Titter titter...
I was born there too!
Good things about Heeley or used to be good
1. You can walk home from town
2. You can here the roar from down town Bramall Lane
3. The Roundouse Pub - Victoria
4. The Hills - Heeley has some of the steepest - Kent Rd and Myrtle Rd
5. Heeley City farm
6. Kam Tong's Chinese - Not sure if this is still there
Fond memories
I was born and raised living next door to the Heeley Green Cinema ( Potters, as was)
As a kid I used to lay in bed and listen to the Heeley Church clock. People who worked at Skeltons would make such a racket as they went down Gleadless Road wearing their clogs.
It was quite noisy, so much so that wehen we eventually moved up to Gleadless Valley I couldn't sleep cos it was too quiet.
I was born and brought up in Heeley, loved it,but alas it has changed in some places beyond recognition. In 1976 the bloody council decided to pull down rows, and rows of terrace properties, what a waste when they did nothing with the land!I loved the close knit community you never had to lock the door when you where in,crime was at a low,we didnt have much to pinch. All the people in the roads knew each other, not like today where you dont speak to your neighbors.Heeley was a happy place to live, and to be brought up in.I dont live in sheffield anymore through work commitments, but my son lives in Heeley, and sometimes we have conversations about places there, and I dont know where he means.I lived there for 25years,it has altered so much.Anyone remember Gregory Road?I would love to hear from you,or that area,Kath
I lived on Foster Road for the best part of 20 yrs & Heeley back in the 60s & 70s before they pulled it down was great, everyone knew each other, some great friends & neighbours, there was an old guy a few doors away called Harry Robertson & he had a club foot ,he used to tell us about the war, also an old lady who also lived a few doors on ,I used to do her shopping,I also worked at the fruit shop on gleadless road just before the foundry & shaky, the shaky was my local what a pub,oh I miss those day's,as the song goes If I Could Turn Back Time.feeling nostalgic.
NotoriousBIG 11-07-2004, 22:12 I used to live on Brooklyn Road in meersbrook/heely, Thats where i grew up as a kid.....
I loved that area, community spirit was fantastic, a true honest hard working area, for honest people, who you can actually talk to and have something in common with......
But I hear the areas going down the nick a bit, which is a damn shame....
I walked home on Christmas eve at about 3am in the morning (after a nice night out), because i couldn't get a taxi.... As I walked through my old area, so many memories came flooding back (and i got a bit of a tear in my eye about that area!!)
ToryCynic 11-07-2004, 23:06 Not another one of these "XYZ, I adore you" threads?!
Why can't all the posts be shoved in a thread entitled "Why I love my area" and stop having loads of threads!
Moan Over!
Alex
P.s I;m starting to sound like "him" aren't I?  :o :o
Sheaf View good..... mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.... :heyhey:
i think i live in Heeley? :loopy: erm i live just off that bit where the road veers left from london road and before the bit where you come to those strange elevated road signal things
that Heeley?
carcrash 12-07-2004, 16:20 The Earl of Arundel and Surry has managed to turn itself into one of the best pubs in Sheffield without letting many people know about it.
I went there on Saturday and had a great time.
Heely/meersbrook rocks.
Most of my friends live there, and it has the Sheaf View.
What more do you want? lol
